Question for Jay Helfert

I will give ANYONE in the world fifty tries at beating a 60. And we can bet $10,000. And I didn't stutter! :)

I watched a pretty good player practicing this in Dallas just a while back and he never got over 44. 60 is incredible and Gabe couldn't give this guy a whole lot of weight.

was there not at least 50 other tries by the other players as well as Gabe's effort before the 60? i watched several attempts by Hopkins and Deuel and some tries they were having a hard time getting to 30. i would think the 50 tries would be a good bet even with these world class players. thanks for the 1pocket challenge Jay it was very enjoyable.

I don't have an exact count, but we paid out $2,500, with $1,000 being Added money. So we collected $1,500 at $50 per three tries. That comes to 90 tries total. Plus we gave an extra turn to anyone running a 15 and there were 11 or 12 of them. And we gave Mika three bonus tries after Gabe beat his score of 47.

So there were well over 100 tries besides the one where Gabe ran the 60. And most of those tries were by top players. The second high score was Mika's 47 and then Alex had a 45. There were several other scores in the low 40's, maybe four or five more. And maybe a dozen in the 30's.

I hope they continue this event at the DCC. Gabe's run might become something of a legend if enough people try the game to appreciate how hard it is. Other than Mosconi's 526 14.1 run, I can't think of too many pool records where a number jumps out at you. No recognized records seem to exist of most racks run in 9-ball or 8-ball.

Was Gabes' run taped, by any chance? I saw that they posted some of Allen Hopkins attempts on AZvideo.

You're on. I am ready to post. The only provision is that I get to count my 5 best innings in the 50 tries (5 innings per try). (I still probably wouldn't make it.)

I wish it was. I think John Schmidt's 45 was taped though by Bob Jewett.

Thanks, I just watched the Hopkins run of 15. Good stuff.

I don't remember exactly which turn(s) of Schmidt's is on the video, but AZBTV now has the whole 40 hours or so of video on the front challenge table. I don't know how long it will take to put on-line or how much they will put up, though. Thanks to Dana Stephenson for providing and installing the video equipment and to Williebetmore for shepherding it after we were finished.

Jay dont get to far out of line, Gabe did awesome no doubt, but he averaged 12 balls/frame, and yeah one bad inning its a dead game to get to 60. But I helieve that if this prop bet was done at every tournment as a side gig for the players someone in a year would beat 60 and probably in 2-3 years get 75 on a Diamondd table, ALOT sooner on the table the chicks play on.

Not to sound too stupid, but how does a One Pocket ring game go? Say I'm one of 4 or 5 players...do we each play the ghost basically till we miss then another player breaks and runs till they miss? And are there any videos out there that I could take a look at of a One Pocket ring game?

I was trying to figure out how to go about getting one started at my poolhall...but could use some help.

Thanks guys!

I'll take that bet Mr. Fatboy. Instead of every tournament for a year, let's just say at the next five DCC's, where all the best players are shooting at it. It won't take a 60 to win next year or the year after that etc. etc.

I would be glad to post a 50 up every year and let the players shoot at that number. A 50 should be good enough to win the One Pocket Challenge most years, let alone a 60. You may not see another 60 on a Diamond table in your lifetime.

I will go one step further. If ANYONE breaks Gabe's record next year, I will pay them a $1,000 Bonus! Okay players, step right up, Jay's giving money away! :)

No problem Mike. The way we did it at DCC is that each player got three turns for $50. Each turn consisted of five innings. I hope you understand the concept of an inning. In each inning the player breaks the balls open, and proceeds to run as many balls as he can without missing in one corner pocket. When he misses the inning is over. After five innings, we then total up all the balls he has made. That is his score.

For example, if you make 3 balls in your first inning, then 6 in the second, then 5, 2 and 8. You are now done. You have had five chances (innings) to run balls. Your score is 24, not bad! Got it?

By the way, you do not need to make a ball on the break. If any balls go down, they spot back up after the break shot. Unless you make them in your designated corner pocket, then they count.

If you scratch on the break, you get cue ball in hand behind the line and continue your inning. You owe one though. So if you make 5 balls, your score for that inning is 4.

I hope this helps.
