question on dale perry ebay cues

Hello. I am new to az and this is my first time being apart of the conversation. On eBay there are some nice looking Dale Perry cues for sale and cheap. Are they of lower quality then his custom cues? Do they play well? For the price you would think that new players would be all over them.

Quite a few of the league players around here play with one. They hit decent I guess. My understanding is, and I could be wrong, is that Dale took on an apprentice a while back, and most of the cues being sold are made by him. That's just what I heard, someone else can probably shine more light on this.

They are a pretty good bang for your buck I suppose. Just don't plan on getting any re-sale value out of them.
 
Theres been a few threads on his cues do a search you'll come up with them. A lot of guys say they are a really good cue for the money. Myself I've never shot with one.

i heard he hired several people to make them and they are of a lower quality. there was a guy around here who couldnt get 200 resale out of one that was just a couple months old, a really nice one to boot. His older ones however are of pretty good quality and I really liked them.

Greg, the cues are basically production cues not customs even though some will say 1 of 1. However, with that said the ones I have seen would make a good player, when you consider how much is being spent on Asian import cues these cues are a steal for the price.

Just remember they are not custom and they are not collectible in any way.

I have owned two DP's now. In my opinion, they are very very good hitting cues. For $100-200 I think they are a great purchase. I would prefer them over the two Vikings I have owned as well as a mid-level pecheaur I owned for a little while (I'm sure I'm in the minority on this). My main playing cue is a predator, but I could easily play with the DP.

Also, you can always purchase a new or used LD shaft and "upgrade the cue" if you would like.
 
I have one of his better quality cues and it is a player. It is my favorite. My alternate players are CueTecs.
I have 2 DP ebay cues. Not a great cue. One of them is not holding up. Ok for the $$. Don't pay more than $150-$200 for any of the DP ebay cues. Do not keep bidding. If you miss out on one another comes up immediately. Also, add about $28 for shipping and hope it gets to you undamaged. Not packed great. The shipping boxes are flexible.

DP = Dont Play.

I'm not sure I would trust a Perry cue for use as a tomato stake.
 
Yeah, do a search on here and you will find all you need to know about DP. Nice cues for a good price, horrible customer service, and the value does not hold up well at all if you want to sell it. You might have to pay someone to buy it if you want to sell it...ok not that bad but you get the point.
 
I've shot with one

One of my teammates and my son-in-law bought one over a year ago.

1. Don't believe the retail price
2. They seem to hit OK and the feel is OK
3. I was surprised that the shaft on both of the Ebay DP cues I have seen is a bit rough.

In both cues it seemed as though the skipped the finish steps on the shaft and I used some 2000 grit sand paper to clean them up.
 
I'm not into custom cues at all. That doesn't mean BTW that I don't think enjoying that hobby is a bad thing. Everyone has to do what they enjoy.

That being said, I know nothing at all about DP cues other than looking at them on ebay once or twice.

I too am curious about the "don't hold up" statement. I mean, wood is wood, glue is glue, unless he reaches for the "don't stick" glue on the cheaper cues. Tips are tips and what you see is what you get. Players? That is an individual thing. Weight, balance, shaft taper, type of tip ... and so on.

How much less could go into a cue that separates it's price from his more quality cues by a thousand dollars. :scratchhead: I mean, unless you are a collector, how bad can it be for a hundred bucks or so? :shrug:
 
I have bought a couple for bar-beaters and I think they hit real good. Nice stiff hit with that big radial pin. I sold both of them to different people in the pool hall that love bacote and they would come up to me and tell me how they felt bad about only giving me 150 for the cue. I paid 115 apiece so I don't care. One of the guys is a SL9 and is a real cue connoisseur, so I value his opinion especially. He said he loves the balance and hit of the cue. Personally, I think it hits only a little softer than my Schon.

The other posters are correct that if you're looking for resale value, look elsewhere. But if you want one of the best cues in the 100-150 price range, you really can't go wrong with a DP.

I also noticed that the shaft finish was a little rough. Sanding/sealing did the trick.

But you made a profit!

I don't think I've ever seen a DP ebay cue for sale on this forum. That speaks volumes to me and I'd definitely buy one if he didn't add an extortionate amount of money for overseas shipping.
 
There have been MANY DP eBay cues for sale on this forum. That doesn't mean they aren't good value. Of the many I have owned and seen in use, the only problem was a ferrule that came off. He should have used another drop or two of glue on that ferrule. :)

I currently own no DP eBay cues but I think they are an excellent choice for a beginning cue and you might just stick with it. The big downside is the same as anything bought long distance - no opportunity to inspect the cue before purchase.

One of the rings are starting to slightly protrude. All in all DP cues look good...play decent...and be gotten at a good price. I over bid on the second DP I bought. Also had a 30" shafts made. Extra $10. If a buyer does have a problem with the cue...Dale can be a bit arrogant. He is not known as Mr. Friendly Recourse..... just from my experience. This is not a bash post...just a bit of 411

I had one. I thought the hit was stiff (stiffer than my Schon). I used it for a couple of weeks as a bar beater and found that I really liked it as a break cue.

I gave it to my father to use...but he hasn't been using it, so next time I see him, I'm getting it back.

I thought the look and finish of the cue was pretty decent, considering the price. It was a really nice looking cue. Don't get me wrong about the hit...it was nice and solid...just a little too stiff for my liking. For a bar beater...I'd buy another one.
