Question on Kamui minimum edge thickness?

Hi all,

I was looking at a buddies shaft today that has a Kamui tip on it. I was shocked how thin he was letting the tip get, probably less than 2 mm at the edge. This is on a Z2 Predator shaft.

I told him I'd be very concerned about his ferrule being damaged playing with a tip that thin. Am I being paranoid or too old school or something?? Are these Kamuis that tough and the new Z2 ferrules that strong?

I can't speak for the strength of Kamui tips or Predator ferrules, but it sounds to me like your friend is flirting with danger. I have replaced countless cracked ferrules (including Predators), and *every* time it's been because of a thin tip. I tell my customers not to let their tip shoulder get thinner than a nickle. Then again, ferrule jobs mean more money in my pocket!

I am not sure how many layers the Kamui is but rough figure in my head round off that is about .080" so based on that he is no longer playing with a layered cue tip he is playing with a layer from a layered cue tip. Try to say that 10 times fast.

I put my kamuis n thin to begin with and feel they play the best that way and the only way I could see having a thin tip being an issue is if you break (hard) with it....

A full 2mm or .080" should not be a problem. But he should not go any lower.

I put a Kamui tip on for a player and he had me cut it half way down to start. I cut $10 off of a $20 tip.

go figure.............

On our OB cue shafts, we recommend no less than 2 layers, which is about .065".

We actually have a red layer as the third layer up, so when you can't see red on the side of the tip, it 's time for a new one.

Good idea. I wish all layered tips had this.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone.

That's a GREAT idea on the red layer OB Cues....!!
