Question

Maybe five years ago, Jeanette Lee was doing a Lasik eye surgery commercial on a local New York radio station, but about a year or so after I no longer heard the commercial, I read in an interview that she wears contacts. Money talks!!

From what I understand the lasik surgery isn't permanent and you can only have it done once. so It's quite possible for someone to get it done then have to go back to contacts.

Having an enhancement depends on the thickness of one's cornea, though we generally like to get it right the first time :) The patient should also be out of their contacts at least two weeks prior to the surgery to ensure that the cornea is at it's natural shape for resurfacing.

Not true. A league teammate recently had it done twice - the first go around, they didn't quite dial his vision in like he wanted. They said it happens sometimes, to wait a couple or three months, and to come back in and they'd do a "touch up". He waited, he went back, they hit him again, and he's quite happy.

I *have* heard that the effects tend to wear off after a few years, sometimes, though. Maybe not "wear off" per se but your vision can deteriorate again.

Now me, I'm not a pro by ANY means but I wear contacts when I play - and primarily, ONLY when I play. If I'm not playing pool I've got my glasses on.

A lady i know, she plays pool on the tuesday 8ball league, that i am on and she had the lasik done almost 2 yrs ago, and she still has to wear glass's for reading.

And she had the same thing, first time around it didnt work out, so she had to goto A DIFFERENT PLACE to get it finished up!!!!!

I wont let anyone with a LAZER go near my eyes, i will stick with my glass's.

Nick Varner has worn contacts for years.
I read somewhere that Nick has had Lasik eye surgery and it turned out great. I saw him at the US Open last month and he played very well.

Eye surgery

We have the trailblazer of eye surgery here in Wichita. Bruce Grene was the first to perform RK surgery, and now does the Lasik, believe there are 2 types of Laser surgery that can be done. Grene Vision Group is widely known around the globe. Dr. Grene has been to countless countries around the world teaching eye doctors everywhere how to perform the surgeries.

My brother had RK a long time ago, and it was filmed, and taken with Dr. Grene to Italy to use when he taught Doctors over there how to perform RK originally. I can not have eye surgery of any kind because I have corneal damage on my eyes. I do go to a doctor that is in the Grene Vision Group, Dr. Doug Blackman. In fact, I went to him this week, and have to go back next week to be fitted with new contact lenses. My old hard contacts were not floating, and left an impression on my eye that needs to 'come out' before I am refitted. He put some soft lenses on me
(never been able to wear soft because of astigmatism front and back of eyes), and I am pleasantly surprised by the vision I seem to have with them. Besides corneal scars and the astigmatism, my natural vision is 20/1000 in my left eye and 20/800 in my right eye. So anytime you think you have it bad, think of my eyes ... lol

Dr. Blackman tells me that my brain must be making up for what my eyes can not see when I shoot Pool ... lol

I believe, that I read that Thorsten Hohman wears contacts.. It seems that it was in an Inside Pool article but I may be mistaken. I do make things up once in a while..:)

OK here is the scoop for anyone that is not informed about Lasik. It all depends on how bad your eyes are, and how old you are. As far as males go your eyes tend to stop changing between the ages of 22-25. So if you do the surgery as a male before you hit 25, then there are good odds that you will have to go under the laser again for some touch ups down the road. Now us males in our 40's tend to have our eyes start going downhill. That is the time where a lot of guys find out they need reading glasses. There is nothing that is going to change this. So if you aren't cool with just 15-20 years of no glasses or contacts, then don't do Lasik.

I had glasses since I was in 3rd grade, and did contacts my 8-12 grade year. By the time I had Lasik done at 26 I was ready for approximately 20 years of no glasses or contacts.

Now if your in the 40+ range on age there is a good chance that when they do Lasik you will still need reading glasses. So be aware of that. My aunt is far sighted and needs to wear glasses to drive and stuff like that. She went in for Lasik and they told her she would just reverse it from being farsighted to near sighted. That means she would have needed glasses to read and work on the computer and such. So she said she would rather leave well enough alone.

Now most people don't know this, but there are people that can get Lasik with no problems and people that get Lasik and have all kinds of problems. Berkley/Caplin Laser Center in Texas has been the leader in Texas since about the early 80's when it comes to eye surgeries. My dad had RK done about 81, and didn't have anything else done until 2001. He had Lasik done in 2001. So I think 20 years was a good deal not to have glasses or contacts. My dad is around 50 and he has to wear reading glasses, but that is it.

If your perscription is too mild or too bad then lasik isn't for you, some lasik centers are just out for the money, so they will do anyone that wants lasik. I advise everyone to get the facts before they do it.

Another new proceedure that is going quite well is permanent contacts. This is for anyone that isn't a canadate for Lasik. They insert them under the clear layer in your eye, and if your perscription changes they can be changed. I think down the road this proceedure will win out as being cheaper, and quicker, and easier.

As far as not having Lasik more than once isn't true. A girl down here in Corpus has had it 4 times within the last 2 years. The main reason is this. They are only supposed to fix one thing at a time. If your near sited and have an astigmatisim then you can bet you will have to go under the laser twice. The government won't let them fix two problems at once. So this lady had to go in 2 times just to fix the near sited problem. Then she had to go in 2 times just to fix the astigmatisim.

Anyway, if anyone needs to know more let me know cause my dad has talked to some of the best doctors in the world on this kind of stuff and like I said he had RK done in the 80's. That is when they did it all with a knife and no laser. Then he just had Lasik in 2001 by one of the best doctors in the country. So good in fact that he just moved to Europe because they offered him more money to come over there and do eye surgery.

My dad started out about 20/1000 or worse, and as far as I know he is still 20/40 right now.

I started out about 20/400 and they took me down to 20/10. Only about 15% of the population has better than 20/20, and the day I had my surgery they got 3 different people fixed to better than 20/20! That was out of 15 people that day that had the surgery.

Any questions just ask.

Jeff White wears glasses, not when plays though. He says he plays practically blind. Not bad for a blind man.

Jimmyg,
I am positive that JL had Lasik surgery more than 5 years ago, and has NOT worn glasses/contacts since - has many times expressed the sentiment that it was a tremendous help to her game.

I had Lasik eye surgery 2.5 yrs ago and still have 20/15 vision in both eyes. I have a lifetime guarantee from the doctor that did it so if it ever deteriorates I can have it redone free. Otherwise, I have "age appropriate" vision, meaning that I need reading glasses for anything closer than arm's length, which is fine for pool and not that big of a problem in life in general. :p

20/*1000*? Holy Zombie Jesus. I didn't know they actually measured up that high (or that bad)! :/
