After cleaning the shaft what sealer do you guys recommend? I know one cue maker who cleans the shaft, goes through the motions with sandpaper and then seals it and then a once over with wax.

I wish I could contact Larry Moran who used to produce "Shark Oil" shaft sealer. This year I read somewhere at AZB he had to stop because he was unable to find some of the ingredients. Hell, may be we have plenty of the stuff he needs here, who knows? Shark Oil was great sealer, and now we are running out of it.
One of the best local cuemakers uses, if nothing else, PVA dissolved in water, 1:1. Then you just sand it off, then again seal, and again sand off going from high to low grit paper (or maybe vice versa, I don't know which is high and low really, but you start with 600-800 and finish with 2000).
Would love to know others experience with sealers, what do you guys use?

I like Lee Malakov's sealer topped off with one coat of MinWax paste furniture wax.

My 2 cents,

I use a water base lacquer. I have seen everything from sanding sealers to waxes to thin cyano. Sealing the shaft is not the same as slicking the shaft. Sealing the shaft means closing off the pores of the grain so nothing can get in to the wood. The idea is to prevent rapid moisture exchange which is directly related to warpage. I often see where guys slick up the bare wood shaft with no sealer under it, and it won't take long before that shaft gets gunked up & needing cleaned again. A properly sealed shaft won't need cleaning for a long time unless there's dents & such. Just don't confuse slicking agents as sealers because it's not the same.

That stuff is kind of nasty. I had some and looked like Elmer's glue... Super sticky as well...
I use Chris Hightower's sealer, Tiger Products and some sealer I bought at Rockler or Woodcraft, don't remember.

I used everything from butchers bowlers wax to minwax to clear shoe polish. I use a lacquer base mixture to seal then sand with 600 then wax and buff.

Hi,

Clear Shellac with 20% denatured alcohol mixed in. Then Carnuba wax after sanding and birnishing.
