Rack Your Own Makes Me Sick

There is nothing worse than watching a World Class Player pattern racking 9 Ball to make it easier to run out. Pattern racking defeats the whole purpose of 9 Ball. Where is the skill?

I saw an Eight Ball match where the world class player racked all the solids on one side and all the stripes on the other side.

As far as I am concerned pattern racking is cheating and should be banned in all tournaments. Running racks while pattern racking means nothing to me.

This old curmudgeon couldn't agree more. But then, I'd also ban jump cues, bringing kicking skill back into the game.

although i tend to agree with you that it should not be allowed.

Go ahead and go pattern rack for yourself and see that it is not that easy to continue to run out even while pattern racking. There is still plenty of skill involved.

I agree there is still skill involved in pattern racking but random racking requires a lot more skill. I think playing the ghost is tougher than pattern racking.

How do you pattern rack 9 ball? I am a low level player and would like to try it on my table at the house while I practice.

Pattern racking is completely up to the player. It's just about paying attention to how your rack spreads. Then placing the balls in the same spot every time. Making the rack very similar every time you break. Each player may place balls in different locations depending on how they want the numbers placed on the spread of the rack.

I recommend playing the ghost instead. Break a 9 ball rack and take ball in hand anywhere on the table after the break. See how many balls you can run. If you run out you have beat the ghost in a game. If you don't run out the ghost beat you.
Depending on you skill level you can do this with 3 balls (1 thru 3) or 6 balls (1 thru 6).

You can also play the ghost in 8 ball. Again depending on your skill level you could play fast eight ball. Take 4 solids and 4 strips and the 8 ball. Rack the 9 balls like nine ball with the 8 ball in the middle. Break and take ball in hand (if you need to) then take solids or stripes and try and run out.

Hope this helps!

Eh, watching a well executed break hit the rack and 3 balls move because the other player slugged you makes me sicker.

Rack your own is the best as long as balls are racked randomly, except 8 for 8ball. BCA rules specify no pattern racking.

I completely agree with this as long as the balls are racked randomly! I play several people who can't rack the balls very well (on purpose or not). I'm spotting them the break because of it. When I break my own rack they spread very well and I don't get slugged!

Tried showing my team mates at league some videos, and they thought rack your own was the weirdest thing they'd ever seen. It's definitely not something to have when attempting to draw a mainstream audience.

I agree with you my friend. It bothers me to. When I rack 9 ball I rack 1, 6 -8,3-9-4,5-7 (7 near the 4 ball) and 2 ball. Almost every time someone racks for me I get a bad rack and bad break. Now I prefer playing 9 ball bank over 9 ball. 9 ball bank is probably the purest pool game there is. My 2 cents worth. Shoot well my friend.

I use to play 15 ball banks a long time ago. I think I will try 9 ball banks a few times.

Rack your own is bullsh@%t

I am sorry but rack your own in pro level events is BS, there should be a ref and a designated rack man neither player should touch the rack My 2 cents worth

What patterns are we talking about? Placing a wing ball like the eight so you have a better chance of going 7 to the 9. IMO no matter what pattern you use in 9 ball once you break them up there is a randomness involved.

I really don't see an advantage. Unless we are talking a magic rack then there is an advantage, but that tends to be based on cue ball position and speed

You should have watched the last TAR match with Shane and Corey or the one with Shane and Donny Mills. There is very little random about those soft breaks.

Until we have a ref racking at every table this will go on, and on, and on. Johnnyt
