Radar Gun

for sale!
Anyone on here ever bought a radar gun that was used for clocking people's break.I was looking on eBay and I can get on for about 100$.I figure it would be something fun to mess with.

Didnt they sell a toy last year with a real working radar gun? It was some sort of remote controlled car. Maybe you can look for that on eBay and get it way cheaper. I would guess it is good up to 25 or so MPH and if it can track that lil car then you know it will get a cue ball. If you are breaking much above 25 then you really dont need a gun, you need to slow it down a bit.

I believe all these gadgets are fun if you enjoy them.

I'm no 9 ball player and for me it falls way behind one pocket and straight pool in games I enjoy, but ... I do know how to play it and I strongly believe that you hit the balls only as hard as you can with complete control of the cue ball.

These gadgets will not tell you if you are in control of your cue ball, so IMO I see no practical use for them.

On a side note, it is interesting the a pro break is in the 25 mph range if I'm not mistaken, and a good pro slapshot in hockey gets up to about 100.

If my thinking is accurate on this, these masses don't continue to accelerate once they are hit since there is no longer a driving force behind them, so I find it strange there is such a difference. Even a baseball's speed.

Maybe Bob Jewett can comment if he reads this post. :)

Radar Guns

I have tried the cheap radar guns and I think they are off. I even had another engineering buddy that took a tripod from a camcorder/camera and mounted the radar gun on that to clock the breaks. He said he could hit a 21 mph draw shot!

I was at a pool hall in the Twin Cities and used their gun to clock my break. I was able to range from 27-31 mph very consistently. I went out to Vegas and also at our state tournament and tried the laser recorded speed break. I only was able to put up 29.8 mph on that. Another player from our region has been able to put up over 32 mph on the laser.

its just for fun

I did speed break up at the derby and it was just fun to see how hard people did break. The fastest i saw was 28 mph.I myself did 27 although the next break seemed harder but they wasn't ready with the gun.I just know it was fun and would like to invest in one that is descent quality.

There was a long thread on this a year or two ago. Try a search for "Radar."

Fastest Sport?

Badminton is one the world's fastest racket sports, requiring
quick reflexes and superb conditioning. In a badminton smash,
the shuttlecock has been timed at speeds over 200 m.p.h. in top
international competition.

200 MPH !!!

So that is what put the 'BAD' in Badminton
They lack two things, explosive bodies and poisoned barbs -- those would make it a real sport.

As for the question about the difference between puck and cue ball speed, I think it's due to the difference in the length of the lever arm. Without moving your upper arm, you only have the lower arm in motion at pool. At hockey, I think you have the whole length of your arm plus the length of the stick below your grip.

In hockey, you also have the torque/rotational contribution of your upper torso with respect to your lower torso.

... and a lot of flex in the stick that (should) release energy back to the puck (kinda like how a properly fit golf shaft releases, kinda).

Of course the aerodynamics of a badminton bird are such that it decelerates at a high rate ... just don't get too close !

Dave, though jai alai was the fastest 'sport'

i'd like to have a radar gun myself. when Mark Wilson timed me i was surprised, i thought i would be over 20 MPH, but i started around 17, then 18, then hit 19.

guess i am just a 235 pound weakling...........:(

hockey puck

also if people broke like they sling those damn hockey pucks someone would get killed at every tournament.it is impossible to break.......i'm gonna say 50 mph without complete distruction of something,a cueball.one ball, someone's face on the other side of the room......i'm probally gonna try one of those eBay radar guns by bushnell.i'll let everyone know.i'm sure its gonna cost the local pool hall a light, wall something.

Your avatar is funny! You could charge the guys at the pool hall $1 to clock their breaks. I'd pay a buck to get my speed. Then I would go practice, come back, give you another buck and see if I improved my speed. It would be paid for really fast.

It has very little to do with strength. I'm barely 135 lbs, 5'6", but I can move the cue ball over 25 MPH.

IMO, it's more timing and movement than strength.

I've never had the chance to do this. We had one of those bushnell radar guns for my high school baseball team. I never got clocked over 81mph with it. My junior year in the state championship i hit 87 on the radar gun they had at the stadium. So i'm not sure how reliable that gun will be. At slower speeds it might work better.

At a Titleholder in PA one year the TAP league op used a radar gun to clock our speeds with women getting a 10MPH spot. The first contest was controlled break with nothing over 19MPH and cue had to stay on the table without scratch. I won that year with a 18.9MPH.

He also does a all out smash for the cash as well.

It was fun and generated alot of cash. If I remember right I won around $400 bucks for the controlled break.
