This is still just 2nd hand info, but from a reliable source.

Rafael died last week in Mexico. Mr. Martinez quit playing pool last May and left for Mexico. It had been reported that he was in bad health then.

He was a great pool player.

Tom, I had actually heard this rumour at least 2 weeks ago. Still no verification though.

Rafael is a great player, jumps balls better than anyone I've ever seen. I lived with Rafael for a short time in Sacramento in the early 90's, and had a chance to practice a lot of 9 ball with him. The guy was incredible! My g/f at the time helped him with his english when he first started coming around to Hard Times in Bellflower. I really hope this rumor isn't true. Someone please find out, soon. Peace.

I hung out with the guy quite a bit myself. I also hope this rumor isn't true. Unfortunately, the last time I saw him he didn't look so good. He said he hadn't slept the night before, so I just figured that was why.

Jimmy I've talked to Rafael at a couple different tournaments and he told me that the night before a big tournament he could never sleep. I really hope this rumor isn't true. I don't know about him quitting pool in May, I could have sworn I saw in at a recent Pechauer event, I could be mistaken though.

The first time I had met Keith, he introduced me to Rafael Martinez, the two of them competing at a tourney in a hotel located in Maryland. I had been away from pool for a very long time and was not familiar with the pool players frequenting the tournament trail.

Rafael invited Keith and I to his hotel room and offered us "a drink." Keith was all for it, and off we went, up the elevator. As is customary with struggling pool players traveling the circuit, he was sharing a room with two other pool players in the tournament.

Keith and I planted ourselves on what available space there was for seating, and then Rafael went to his little refrigerator in the room, handing Keith and me a Coca-Cola. Keith looked at the can of Coke with his eyebrows raised up, but thanked him for the soda. Rafael was on the wagon at that time, stating he had given up booze for good.

Then Rafael walks over to a small boom box he had in his room, turns it on, and began to listen Mexican love songs in Spanish. He proudly stated these melodies were very meaningful in his country. What happened next was actually quite beautiful when Rafael broke out in song, singing along with the music in his native language. He knew all the words! ;)

We've run into Rafael many times since my first encounter, and he's always been very reserved, a quiet-type guy, but there is a mystique about him that is intriguing. A very proud man, he seemed to be kind of melancholy at times, but on a mission for true happiness. He did tell me several years ago that he was sick, but did not expound on what it was that was ailing him.

I truly hope this is not true. He's one of the old-school road warriors. Before the Philippino Invasion, the Mexican champions were the tough contenders, and Rafael Martinez is one of those great Mexican players. I'm hoping he'll turn up soon. :)

Sharandrew,

I don't know how you heard about it 3 1/2 weeks ago.. why don't you explain yourself? Are you sure we are refering to the same person? It has been almost a month since you heard it.

I guess NO one will know for sure. I certainly hope it is not true.

Tom, do you know how to get a hold of Joe Salazar? I think Rafael and he are friends, and Joe may be able to provide an answer.

Still just a rumor...

Dear posters,

It may be wise before speaking of Rafael in the past tense, that we have more details and proof about this rumor.

I say this because, as a very close friend of Rafael, even the thought of him being gone hurts deeply. I personally took him to the bus depot the day he began his journey back to his home in Colima. This was in June. His health was good, his spirit was strong and he was happy.

Since June I have spoken with him on numerous occasions, and he spoke of returning to the states to play again. I do know that after he had spent a month or so with his family, he had ventured north to Tijuana where he was working on his game and renewing his visa.

The most recent conversation was in October and it is not like him to not call at least once or twice a week, so I do have my concerns. I have put out a few calls, through a friend who speaks Spanish, to family members that live here in the states. We hope to hear good news soon.

Until then, let's all pray that he is okay and that we can look forward to his return. If and when I hear anything I will pass it along.

There are a lot of us that know Rafael in the Sacramento area, that are trying to find out for sure.

Banker Burt, was the mutual friend that took Rafael to the bus station.

Within the last week, there has been two reports of his passing. No reports of him being OK.

We only met a few times, but I felt like we both became friends very quickly. He spent thanksgiving at my house last year, and we all had a good time. I will be very sad if this rumor is true.

A great player

I don't know if this is true or not, but Rafael is one of my favorite players. I remember the first time I saw him play back in about 1990. The guy was so intense at the table. He was the first player I seen pushout after the break into a jump shot, the other guy would always pass it and Rafael would then proceed to make what looked like an impossible ball to jump and run out. One of the most impressive players I've ever seen.

Rafael can jump with a full cue better than many players can with a jump cue. He is also incredibly good at masse shots.

Have no idea whether this rumor is true, but one thing I like about Martinez and the other Mexican players (Morro and Dominguez are the only ones that come to mind) is that they are extremely proud of thier heritage.

America schools rarely teaching Mexican history, so far too many of us have our image of Mexico formed by movies like Traffic, which shows Mexico at its worst, and the Treasure of the Sierra Madre, in which most of the Mexicans playing significant roles are banditos.

Mexico is a great country that far too many, myself included, haven't had the opportunity to get to know. Still, all my experiences with Mexican pool players, both professional and amateur, have been positive.

Umm, no offense, but does American schools teach any other history besides American history ? Are children being taught European history, World wars on European soil, Russian history (czars etc.), Chinese history (emperors, boxers etc.) ? Even briefly ? Most Americans I've met have acquired a lot of knowledge in history by self-studying, not in schools.

Still, I hope the rumours about Rafael Martinez aren't true and he's well.
