Randy Goldwater NYC Interview: Patron Saint of 14.1

Randy Goldwater is a special member of the NYC pool scene. In financing the World Straight Pool Championships, Randy has graduated to be an important member of the Professional Pool Scene.

I see him often at Amsterdam Billiard Club, and we always greet each other warmly and with respect. Randy is a quality guy who felt compelled to do something special for pool. The rest of us are his beneficiaries.

Thanks, Randy.

your welcome.

Thank you Charlie and SJM for the kind words.

I am happy to be a small part in bringing the genre of straight pool back from the brink of extinction.

Pool has brought me many, many years of enjoyment. Having the opportunity to assist in bringing 14.1 back to the forefront is the least I could do.

It is my sincerest wish that the the fans enjoy seeing, hearing and reading about this event and that the players equally enjoy participating.

My deepest and warmest thanks to Charlie Willaims and the staff at Dragon Promotions for indulging this dream of a true 14.1 World Championship.

oOK why is only upa's top players only playing in it ? And also why is that a lot of UPA events have a real low audience turn out ??..UPA is trying to get people out to watch the pro's play pool.Im sorry .But all of the upa events i have gone to have been a waste .BUt the one good thing i can say .It all was good to see old friend ..from NYC .. deadstroke32..sorry the 14.1 event is going be a waste of time ..

Hay upa guys what happen to the 14.1 tourment that was going on in NJ first ..???
Upa JUS like WALMART comes in a takes over, sucks all the life out of small and big tournments and then folds..

Sorry to burst your bubble, but this is not a UPA event, although it is sanctioned by the UPA as well as the WPC. I don't think that Nick Varner, Bobby Hunter, Mike Seigel, Allen Hopkins, Mike Zuglan, Marlon Manolo, Oliver Ortman, Thomas Engert, etc. etc. are considered UPA players.

Furthermore, in todays era of pool, generally the top active players in the world participate in the UPA. Some because there is not really any other viable options. Can you honestly say that people like Thorsten Hohman, Tony Robles, Johhny Archer, and John Schmidt don't deserve to play in a 14.1 World Championship?

Me thinks you are either a completely uniformed bafoon, or have your own agenda/ax to grind. Perhaps a friend of yours didn't get an invite.

Great pains were taken to have the most capable straightpool players invited. Those that didn't recieve one of the 47 invitations (14 qualifiers and 3 wild cards = 64 players) were placed on an alternate list.

Half of the invited players are definetly NOT regular UPA participants.

Many thanks for helping to bring 14.1 back to life. Although I won't be able to go watch it, at least I'll be able to hear about the games and maybe see some on video.

Sounds like quite a nice turnout of top players. I heard that Rempe and West were invited but declined. I hope you guys can make some money so that maybe you could make it an annual event.

I'm part of a small group of people in the Chicago area interested in seeing more 14.1 leagues and tournaments. We just started a 14.1 league at ProTyme in Orland Park and are already playing in one at Red Shoes in Alsip and at Illinois Billiards Club in Willow Springs.

Love your post, man! Had me in stiches! I'm assuming, of course, you were trying to play the insipid fool for the sake of humor. You did great!

You have got to be kidding me!
Tony Robles was a top caliper Straight Pool player long before the UPA formed, it is definately his best game.

You right- and clarification noted- he is a solid 14.1 player. I was specifically referring to the 9B tourney opportunities that have been extended to him over the past few years.

thank so much for sponsoring the tourny! i would have loved to play but there were no qualifers in fla. i have played in most 14.1 world tournys and love to watch and playthe best in the world! good luck and i hope it is and anual event! thanks again and good luck with it!

tony robles

9 ball invitations extended to him? are you kidding black balled? You must have forgotten that in 2003 (or 2004) Mr tony Robles WON the BCA open title. This is one of two major United States Open tournaments. Hard to fluke your way to a title with that field.

I see Tony everyday at Amsterdam. For the past several weeks, Tony has been playing straight pool (and running over a 100 balls) daily. As I played Danny Barouty yesterday, Tony was playing near me, and off his opponenets break, went 151 and out.

Question for Charlie Williams

**Koreandragon**

NYC Cue dude, I read the Danny Harriman thread and understand that, according to your own words, you had no say in the selection of who was invited to compete so my question is geared mainly towards Charlie.

Seeing as how your company is one of the main promoters, I have to ask you Charlie, how was the selection process determined? Why were some players invited while others weren't?

Just curious because the are many people like myself that feel that some players who did NOT receive an invite deserve to be there moreso than others who received invites.

This remark is so off the wall I'm not sure whether to take it seriously.

Straight Pool
Tony Robles came 7th in the US Open Straight Pool Championships in 1993, finished 9th in the national straight pool championships in 1999, and won the high run prize at the 2000 US open 14.1 event when he ran 148 against Archer. Hell, he's run over 200 five times playing against me alone, and ran 200 and out against George "Ginky" SanSouci in an exhibition match in 1997.

Nine Ball
Tony Robles beat Johnny Archer in the US Open 9-ball event in 1993, and went on to be a highly ranked player on the PBT. I believe his PBT ranking went as high as #12 in the late 1990's. He finished 2nd in the 2002 BCA Open, won the 2004 BCA Open, and was 9th in the 2004 US Open. At the Mosconi Cup that year, Tony Robles played Mika Immonen with Europe trailing 11 - 10 in the race to thirteen matches. Very simply, it was a match Team Europe had to have. Team captain Nick Varner called Tony's win over Mika that brought the US to within one win of the Mosconi Cup the biggest match win of the final day.

This is a great player with a proven pedigree, one that earned the chances he's gotten the hard way.

NYC cue dude.....thank you so much for all your help in putting this together. For both the fans and players. I have a simple question hopefully you can answer.. I see from Charlies web site that there are vip tickets available. But what about general admission tickets. Could you please find out where i or anybody else can find out. And can you tell me what the dress code for the players is. I talked to Mike Zuglan the other night and he had no idea what the dress code is. thank you for your help in finding this out......mike

Gotta respectfully disagree, Walter.

If you check it out, Tony is way qualified to represent in 14.1 or 9 ball. He really is the "real deal".

I have to believe this is either inaccurate, or due to him just not playing the game much (yet).

Big-table 8-ball with open table after the break... jeez, it's scary thinking how many racks he might be able to run.

Excellent job on all the stats and accomplishments, though, Railbird!

A couple of his stats probably need to be updated, I just can't believe that anyone could possibly think that he doesn't have the qualifications, never mind the fact that he is one of the most approachable and friendly pro-players out there, truly representing our sport with professionalism.

dress code and tix

There will be general admission tickets sold at the door on a daily basis, but I am not auite sure how much they will be.

As far as the dress code, players must wear shoes, dress pants, button down collared shirts and VESTS! ties are optional.
