RAT cues - repair work review

We've all seen a recent member (ratcues) advertising his repair services over the past few months. He is an established cue repair/making business operating with Troy Downey out of Mueller's shop. I like some of the stuff he has done and wanted to get a stack wrap done on an older Joss that I've had.

I pm'd Ryan A. Theewen (RAT) and asked what I would be charged, to which I was highly surprised at his pricing - http://www.poolndarts.com/53-Professional-Cue-Repair/

He said that if I mailed it off, he would have it done and returned in about a week, which was dead accurate. I also asked that he take a look at a MASSIVE ding that was in the buttsleeve. I told him that I think the brown two tone stack wrap would probably work best. Upon his receiving the cue, he said that the black/natural would probably look better, and I said "go with it".

I received the cue yesterday, just over a week after mailing it out. I was PLEASANTLY surprised to see the quality of work done for the pricing charged. If ANYONE is looking for a stack wrap, this would be my first choice. In addition, the buttsleeve looks brand new! Ryan did say that the ding was into the inlay as well, but I can't even see where it was in the first place!

My take on the process - Ryan is very responsive to any communication and will give great advice. His pricing is FAR below what it should be for quality done, and turnaround is very quick. A++!!

Yes, I suck at taking pics... If you'd like, here is another thread that Ryan started in the gallery, his pics are better. http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?p=564344 :p

I have to say that I am impressed, and I think he did an awesome job, and was right on the mark with the wrap color...it now helps bring out the ebony in the inlays....looks great!!

Thanks for the review. It is great to know of a repair man that does great work at a reasonable price.

The wrap really compliments that cue. Nice job and design.

Bump to this thread,i have seen his cues and they are pretty nice and hit well at a reasonable price.

I think all of the multi-color spirals would make me feel dizzzy......:p

Ross,

It came out nice. Is that your first stack wrap? How do you like playing with it?

I've had one for awhile now. It will not be as quite as slick later on. Once you can feel the edges curling up, in maybe six mionths to a year, it's time to get it pressed and re-sealed. This can be done many times. I estimate the life of the wrap at about 5 years with an annual press and reseal by a stack wrap expert. I don't know what RAT charges for this - I think Tiger is $35.

Chris - Yup, it is... I used a cue a friend had and wanted to try it out. I've messed around with it for a total of 3-4 minutes, but haven't played with it yet due to the little one keeping all of my attention... (not that I object at all) :p

For the price RAT charged, I couldn't pass it up. I had no idea that it would change that drastically over time, but really is worth it in the long run.

Thanks for the tidbit of info! :D

Well, I can't vouch for his repair work (BECAUSE I HAVE NOT HAD TO USE IT), but I did buy one of his cues I will tell you that it is awesome. I get so many comments on it and everyone loves the way it plays as well as I do. AWESOME JOB!! You want a bad A$$ looking 'player's cue' for an incredible price, then the RAT is the way to go. I am sending it to Petree cues for the ringtail wrap.

Stack wrap

I had a stack wrap put on in 95 by Tiger
I just went to check it as I dont use it that often
Edges didnt curl up yet
I think it has the nicest feel of all the leather wraps I have

I don't think I'll have any issues.. :)

I had mine done by Tiger, and, though I've only seen your picture, I'd say he did as good a job as Tiger does.
Personally I'm disappointed with the stack wrap and wish I had gone with a regular leather wrap. I don't like the way the ends taper off somewhat unsmoothly, and I don't like the feel as much as a regular leather wrap or for that matter as much as a wrapless. It was an experiment because I thought the varigated colors would be a nice effect and it is but... Oh well, live and learn, I still like it better than linen.

I'll have one of my personal cues done in a few days with a brand new color of stack wrap. I wll try to get pics of it to post. It has the coolest piece of cocobolo I have ever seen.

I personally like a good textured leather myself but cork is my first choice. Maybe I need to build myself a new cue and install one.....
