Really big payout

Alot of sponsors pay those guys a very very good living, tournament money is just a bonus check. Arnold, jack and a few others helped In the money department but every pro golfer should wake up and say Thank you Tiger! Tigers crowds really jumped the golf world and pay checks 10 fold
Most players make most of their $$ from tournament winnings. The top 10-15 do get big sponsor bucks but not all. Average sponsorship $$ is around 700-800thousand. It also costs on average 500grand+ just to compete for a year(caddies, travel, agent, coaches, laundry, etc). These cats don't drive a ten yr. old beater, triple bunk at a DaysInn or eat at MickeyD's

The reason those guys get paid big sponsorship bucks is because they win/won tournaments.

Horse/cart.

Tiger Wood was getting over 50 Million/year from products endorsements.

Imagine someone with a M to pump into the pool economy, coming on here and seeing the seeming endless wars, they wouldn’t get involved.

Pool has sabotaged itself to a extent.
Yes and no. What could be more discusting then wrestling. If you have viewers you have sponsors. There just is no market for pool.

I sat in on a meeting years ago with the Ted Turner represents. They were starting a new sports network. Pool was being pitched to them. They seemed interested but I guess the numbers didn't add up because nothing came of it.

pools only chance is to do it themselves. That requires organizing. What do they say about cats.

I would have thought that by now in a world full of guys so freakin' rich that they could fix pool for about as much as one of the their alimony checks, that at least one of them would have seen some kind of opportunity to hide a little cash. Naw. Not really.

While it would take seed money, to do it it would have to be a self sustaining organization. Probably non profit. You set it up like many charities to promote the sport and run tournaments.

Believe it or not, you could even get government grants to support it. I'm not kidding. Unfortunately, we are talking about pool players so don't expect anything to ever happen.

I don't play golf, but it seems pricey to get into- is it?
I'm sure there are ways to practice without a big investment
but it seems it would cost more to get good at golf vs. pool
anyway
cash as a barrier, and not- there's a flip side to every coin

If one that needs the best of everything then you can easily put a few grand in a golf bag, clubs but I started out with a Walmart set years ago $180 everything and they played just fine. Even most course fees isn't to bad, it's the golf cart fee that gets you. Example - I can play my local 9 hole for $15 if I use my push cart but it's $34 if I rent a golf cart

Depending on equipment outlay and where you play, golf ranges from about the same as pool to much higher at a top-end track. Being outside and not having to deal with chiselers who live in their car is a bonus imo. ;)

At Pebble Beach you have to stay at the hotel. One round per night of stay. The rounds run about $800/pp. If you go with three buddies, you can rent a 4 bedroom fairway suite for $7500/night. On the cheap, you can squeak by for under $2000/round.

Here's something I don't get. The room I play in (all seniors) ranges from some beginners to guy that have played for years. The number of them who don't have a clue who SVB or Dennis Orcollo are is amazing. Sure they may know Minnesota Fats or some other "big" name from 50 years ago.
I bet if you go to the local golf course and ask a similar question about say Mickelson or Tiger or even Rahm you probably be hard pressed to find someone who didn't recognize the name. Maybe all most pool players care about is playing the rest really doesn't matter.

I was talking to a pretty good pool player that is in his mid 30's.
I mentioned that I had seen Irving Crane,Jimmy Caras and a couple other old players years ago and he had no clue who they were.

People fly in from all over the World to play there.

Too be fair those guys are all over local tv stations and else where every weekend. I see your point though

A lot of this has to do with the way golf (and pool) is played and announced.

In golf you get to see 20 seconds of a player lining up to take a shot, them move on to a different player different hole, so that after an hour of watching, you have an idea of who all is playing, where they rank, how they are playing, a bit about the charities this event is donating, and basically a rundown of the entire event. Even the commercials are not "that bad". But that is how golf is, hit the ball, walk for 4 minutes, wait, hit the ball, walk for 4 minutes, wait.....

In pool you see 1 game from break to high ball, then watch a 6 minute commercial, then 7 minutes of another game, the 6 minutes of another commercial,... Nothing about other tables, other players, charities, equipment,.... Nothing
And in pool, the commercials are significantly more terrible than the commercials in golf.

There is a reason people watch golf on TV.

Besides prime time golf coverage and big time sponsors there are 50K or so paying fans for at least 4 days.
As I said before Golf sells Rolexes and pool sells chalk.
I remember a time when 14 cents piece of chalk was all you need. Now, we have people making a living selling $20-$30 chalk. Maybe we're getting there.
During COVID, interesting thing happened in my local pool scene. Amateurs were willing to pay $300 entry fees, as with the Calcutta money paying $5-$10K for first & second wasn't unheard of.

When I first started reading this thread I thought for sure golf payouts were much higher because of the number of players in golf is much higher. After googling it I was very surprised that both golf and billiards involve 20-30m each in the USA.

I think pool may actually have more participation. With pool rooms, bar league's, home tables, clubs and all the various places you might see a pool table it's far easier for somebody who plays pool to just pick up and go play some.

To play a around the golf practically requires a master plan and can't just be done on any given day at any given time.
