Where should we be aiming and how can we recognize it? If I made the shot and my fundamentals are not good, could it be that I just got lucky?

A great shot made with a bad stroke is just an accident.

You forgot miscues, skids and bad rolls.

I think the first would fall under the fundamentals problem catagory. As for the other two, everything that happens with the balls when you are at the table is a direct result of what you did with that piece of wood in your hands.

If you know where to aim, and you can deliver the cue ball to that spot, there is no excuse for missing. If you missed, you can just about bet it was the result of wrong aim, or poor delivery.

great answer............

We miss shots for two reasons. ONe, we aim at the wrong place, or, two, we have a fundamentals issue that didn't allow us to deliver the cue ball where we were aiming.

Once we develop a consistent, repeatable stroke, all that is left is to learn where to aim.

You hit it right on the head Steve,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

You needed a box for "Bad Eyesight" :frown::frown::frown:!!!

I'm not so sure about that. I have 20/15 vision, but I recently discovered that I had a perception flaw. You can correct bad vision, but how do you correct perception? How do you know if you have a perception flaw? My brain believed what the eyes were seeing, but it was not reality. That's because my right eye is stronger and my brain uses more information from that eye and less from the left. In effect, I was not seeing the whole picture until I forced myself to sight with both eyes equally. Once I did that, my aim had to be adjusted. I still miss shots, just not as far off the mark as I did before.

Accident? Perhaps not. Could it be that the subconscious recognized that you were going to miss the shot and forced you to make a last second correction?

Wandering attention (poor mental focus), which for me explains most of the other problems most of the time.

Eyes might be a little off.

Hi there Big C,

What most of players don't know is the eyes can be to the right or the left a little and the shot can still look OK to shoot but the reality of it is the shot is almost doomed from the start.

Have you ever had anyone tell you that you missed because you jumped up? Because your eyes were not in the right place the shot did not look quite right. You shot the shot anyway. Your brain knew it was not right and you kind of knew also but shot anyway.

Because of this you jumped up or twisted or maybe something else, but because the eyes were not in the right place and the look was not right is the reason you missed. it could be something else but many times this is the reason.

I get a kick when I jump up on a shot and I know I didn't line my eyes up right and a spectator says to me you missed that shot because you jumped up. He's just trying to help.

But I know I jumped up from indecision within my self because it didn't look right.

This is why some days you seem to make everything and others you seem to miss alot.

Have a great day Geno...........

Poor mental focus would be my reason. One of the reasons I miss more shots now than 10 years ago is I can't go out and gamble anymore because of my health. I know that everyone doesn't need to gamble to have a game mean something, but I need it to stay focused. Nothing like a $50 9-ball to thighten your butt to stay focused. Johnnyt

Kudos to the OP for outing those moving pockets.....dem pockets are sneaky bastards

And when your mental focus breaks down, what does it affect, your aiming, or your delivery?

Steve

Both. I'm less careful with my aiming and less coordinated in my delivery.

.......and that "certain" opponent. ;) Distractions can really cause a mental breakdown and direct our focus in a totally different direction.

Last night, I was tired. Fatugiue is a huge factor in the game of pool. If your mind is tired your game is tired. You simply make mistakes you normally don't make if your not tired. I try to take a nap if I'm going out to play for the night.

My biggest problem is a combination of the list, I swear I had a pocket move on me once!
