well reading the red dot vs. blue dot thread got me thinking of meuccis shafts. iv played with a few meuccis but they were all the red dot shafts. whats the diference between the red dot and black dot shafts? and is there a black dot and a black dot bullseye shaft? or are they the same thing...just curious, thats all....
thanks,
Jay

Red Dot are the Old Series, Black Dots are like the Predator Shafts made by Meucci. Do they work as well as the Predator Shafts I do not know..

Not that I recommend buying a Meucci, far from it...way too many quality issues to even begin discussing. If you have one you like great...you may not be so happy with a newer one. Having said that...if you must go Meucci...the red dot is the better shaft (if you can find a straight one). The blk dot is not like the Predator. Its a flat laminated shafts...instead of put together like a pizza (Pred.) it more like stacked up boards in a lumber yard...hope that makes it clearer to visualize. Now there is nothing wrong with a flat laminated shaft...I've used plenty that were outstanding. Its just that the blk dots are having huge quality issues.

What are some of the quality issues BLACK DOT shafts are having? THANKS

Black dot...

From personal experience...i've got a Meucci cue with a black dot shaft i carry it in the trunk of my car never take it out...it's about 3yrs old and it's still straight as it can be...by what i read here i must be lucky..it's not the best hitting cue i've played with..but for the money i've got in it i'm more than happy...

I have a Meucci, the Blk dot shaft that came with the cue had de-lamination problems. I sent it back and got a new one, and this one seems OK, had it for a year, hasn't warped yet, I never use it though. Old Meucci's are good, new one's have bad quality control problems.

Delam problems as said above. I've seen at least a dozen personally. And several have also ruined their shafts when rubbing them with a rag...part of a lam catches and pulles out. Many have huge glue seams with chunks of glue missing as well. I was recently at a retail store and the owner showed me over 20 new ones...every single one was warped as we rolled them. Keep in mind too, the ferrules on both versions are hollow. The tenon only goes 3/4 of the way up the ferrule, leaving a big hollow spot right under the tip. I've had to replace these often with better, unbreakable ferrules. You have to go back to the "no dot" shaft to get a ferrule with no hollow gap. Don't get me wrong either, its not a small hollow spot like on a common capped ferrule...its much larger.

i live in north ms and it seems like everyone has a meucci cue. even the most beat up cues i have seen in and out of the hall are strait....never seen a warped one...i think i live in meucci country, seriously 2 out of 3 people who come in have a meucci.

Funny you should say that. A cue shop locally ordered a new one to match a certain cue for a customer. When they finally got it, it looked warped to the naked eye just looking at it. Not only did it look like a boomerang. It was warped in two ways. One twist to the right and one to the left.

The Red Dot shaft has a little red dot that marks the "spine" of the shaft. The idea being to stroke with the red dot pointing straight up so that the spine is always aligned the same way thereby making for a more consistent feel of the hit.

The Black Dot is a flat laminated shaft (not a radial laminated like the Predator). The design is supposed to produce less "squirt" (as does the Predator 314 shaft).

I have an older pre-Red Dot Meucci and it works just fine. OTOH, a few people I know have the Black Dot and quite a few have experienced problems with them.

Lets give credit where credit is due, Bob Meucci has made a couple of nice cues....... too bad he never sold either of them...... :D

At my local pool hall it seems to be 1/3 Lucassi, 1/3 Meucci, and 1/3 custom/schon.

I've always thought of Meucci as ok. I like it better than Joss or McDermott but not as much as Lucasi or Schon. I have a meucci orginal sneaky pete that plays great. I even like it better than my schon. But I normally play with my Schon because I don't like switching sticks to break with. It's just my pet peave.

Either way most higher end sticks will be a good stick. I watch Cliff Joyner play with a Meucci. Johnny Archer a Scorpion. And Allison Fischer a Cuetec. The owner of the shop I work for will beat me with an old Meucci 1peice house cue when I'm using a schon with an aftermarket shaft. It's mainly all skill and what your comfortable with.

As for warping. I own a McDermott, Meucci Orignal, Meucci, Players, Players Profesional Series, Axiom, and a schon. All have been in the back of my vehicle for over a year. The Players Profesional Series has been in the back of my vehicles for 6 years. That is it being rained on, winters, summers, etc. Still straight.

Basically don't let the Custom worshipers sway you. Meucci makes a decent stick. If you want perfection plop about $2,000 and buy a Scruggs or something.

No pro pool players play with Meucci shaft unless they came with the cue!!!!!

That's not entirely true. When my blood sugar is just right (I'm diabetic) and my shakin' bridge hand is tremblin' just right, then my 20 year old pre-dot Meucci is the perfect cue for me that night as the throw seems to counter my shake, and the ball drops in the pocket.:D

Efren hasnt played with a Meucci since the mid-late 90s when Bob was on a hot streak and had money to sponser several pros. And as soon as the money stopped...... Efrens Meucci disappeared.

i concure about the money..if some guy made a cue stick called "broom stick" and looked like one...if he threw enough money out there some major person would play with it....I own a black dot...i do not like the taper of the shaft..but some guy was selling it for 30 bucks at my local pool hall i dont think he knew what he had..i even told him that shaft retails for over a 130+ bucks..he said give me 30 and its yours..hell i could pass that up..i did the deflection test that i knew about..which is shooting a ball in the corner pocket and measuring the spot on the side rail where the cue ball hit...the originial shaft of my Lucassi was awful in this test..my 314 shaft which i shoot with now was amazing..but i then put on the black dot and low and behold the point that it deflected to was not much diffrence that the 314....i was impressed...but i cant get past the taper of the shaft...
