Reduce Cue Weight

Hi,

I have a Players HXT15 Cue with 20 Oz weight. My problem is that it gets really hard to control the power to the shot [I always end up hitting harder than needed] and so I want to reduce the weight of the cue to mitigate that problem.

I live in Northern VA / DC area. Can anybody suggest how I can DIY reduce the weight or should I take it to a professional ?

Can someone suggest me professional Cue repair person in Northern VA / DC area.

Thanks

i know this isnt the answer to your question
sell your cue and buy one at the weight you want

Value of a players cue isn't enough to pay to change weights. I agree with buying something else to what you want.

Whoa .... take the rubber bumper off, isn't there an allen screw head to remove the weight bolt? Either put in a shorter one or cut it off with a hacksaw.

Measure the weight and do some simple math to determine how much to cut off. For example, if it is a 3 oz weight, half of the length will be 1.5 oz. You can fine tune that pretty easily. Screw it back in.

You can lessen the weight on most production cues by taking out the weight bolt in the butt. Just remove the butt cap and look inside, most weight bolts can be removed using a hex head wrench 1/4, 3/16 or something like that.

I have removed the butt weight of every cue that I bought whether a cheap off the wall or a used cue what ever.

Take the bumper off & take a look with a flashlight. Some need a long thin screw driver & some a long hex wrench.

I am not familiar with Players.

As to the weight I always want a light cue because I can always add power when I want to do so but hitting soft delicate shots is easier with a lighter cue.

Be aware that removing the butt weight will change the balance.

As said by someone, you do not have THAT much invested in the cue. Perhaps you can sell it & get the weight cue that you want.

Good Luck & Best Wishes,
Rick

I'm sorry, but it the weight is changable, and I'd be VERY surprised if it isn't, selling the cue just to get the weight you want is like trading in your car because your tires are over inflated. That's just crazy.

Every Players cue I've ever seen had a weight bolt. You can buy different lengths in case you don't own a hacksaw. In fact, you can even leave the bolt out entirely if that's your thing. Players bumpers are press fit only so you don't need the weight bolt to hold it in.

this is a lets agree to disagree and still be friends responce:smile:
i think on lower end cues you can more easily find a cue with the weight and balance you like than to "throw good money after bad"
if the cue is your holy grail than go for it

Thanks for the laugh.

I turned 60 on the 7th. I could not remember who it was that said it & I just did not go back to look.

Sorry...& you surely are not that sensitive or we probably would not be referring to each other at all.

Best,
Rick

First of all .. Players cues aren't bad just because they aren't built by a custom builder. They are a fine cue for the money. ( a commodity that not everyone has a surplus of in this economy.)

Secondly, you don't need to have some custom cue that costs a zillion dollars to play well. In fact that's crazy in and of itself. All you need is TIP ... TAPER ... WEIGHT ... BALANCE to your liking which equates to sandpaper, drill, glue, tip, and weight bolt.

And thirdly .... Does this seem to be spending a lot of money?

Seven bucks ... whew... ya that's really going out on a limb. Not to mention, he said he wants it LIGHTER ... um .... don't buy any weight, simply cut the damned thing, its free.

let me start by saying its the indian not the arrow
A $1000 CUE DOESNT MAKE YOU PLAY TWICE AS GOOD AS A $500 CUE
at every price point thats true
my comment is whatever price point you want to spend you can get a schon or joss or mcdermott thats the weight and balance you want for a few hundred dollars thats probably a better investment than making a 3-500 dollar cue fit you

I give up ... HE has the cue already. He has to spend NOTHING to make it weigh less. This doesn't seem all that hard to grasp here. You unscrew the bolt, cut it, put it back and call it a day.

Thanks all for the response.

To address all of your suggestions

I bought a Players cue, because that's how good I am. I'm already 36 and I have just started playing pool few months back. I am trying to learn the ropes.

I stopped using the default American Heritage cues that came with my pool table [Costco to the rescue] because the sticks were slightly wobbly when rolled. I did myself a favor and got a decently made straight cue. It has a Kamui tip on it and its better than anything else I have used. The day I feel I have grown out of the cue, I would want to upgrade.

I finally summed up a courage and opened up that rubber plug on the back of the cue and found a 2.5 Oz bolt on it. So I guess I will buy a 6 mm Hex Key and 1 / 1.5 Oz bolt from that e-bay site.

I apologize if I sound blunt, and I appreciate everyone's response to my dilemma.

I am sure I will have fun being a member here.

I'll post few videos of my play/shots for expert opinions once I get some breather.

Thanks all.
Cheers

Dont think I have ever watched a really good player running racks and thought to myself. Man he must have a really good stick.
