My dad always told me not to bet a lumber yard against a matchstick.--Leonard

hemicudas said:I think we all have similar stories, John and I totally agree with what you did. Today there is a simple way to keep this from happening, thanks to the net. Wire the up money to Jay Helfert or another mutually trusted third party. These people who say, Why didn't you play for the 3K, miss the point. Why let them fire a single 3K barrell at 10 or 15 times that? You are so right when you say it is a NIT move.
Terry Ardeno said:Bill,
I couldn't wait to hear what you thought of these 2 (Pierce and Deuel) matching up. If you have time and care to, could you give us your take on their proposed show down? Would Reed need the wild 8 or any other spot? Not being as familiar with him as I am with Deuel, I read what Ironman and Joey A had to say and since both of these posters are top shelf and respected, their view on Reed still being strong even after the layoff adds another spin here. So IF it ever does come off, what do YOU think?
Much thanks!
InTheCloudzzz said:In Columbus, OH March of 2005, a deal was made over the phone between Reed Pierce and Corey D. to play $10k sets 9 ball on the barbox w/ Reed getting the wild 8. When Reed gets there to play the $10k set, Corey and company only want to bet $3k/set. Because the AGREED upon game was not respected by Corey and company, the game never took place. Let it be said that it is not known who the stakehorse(s) were behind Corey that reneged on the agreed upon game. Once there, Reed made it clear that he would take the wild 8 on the barbox or the big table. Again, Corey and company would only play for $3k/set. Because this was LESS THAN A THIRD of the agreed upon game, Reed chose not to play as it was not worth his time and effort.
As Hemicudas can testify to, Reed has done very little playing (if any) ever since. About a year ago, Reed and his brother, Ronnie, have opened the Reed Pierce Bar & Grill located in Byram, MS (just a few miles south of Jackson, MS). I will guarantee that this sports bar (w/ 2 9' Diamonds, 2 7' Diamonds, and 5 Valley 7' tables) has the best steaks than any other pool room in the south (very possibly in the country!!!).
Reed has stated himself (less than 3 hrs ago) that with 4 months notice, he will be more than willing to get back into action if the price and game is right.
Before all the bashers on here start their rants against me because this is only my second post, I heard this straight from Reed Pierce's mouth no more than 3 hrs ago. For all of you haters out there, just ask the well known and respected Hemicudas b/c he can verify this within minutes with a phone call to Reed himself (I guarantee he knows how to get a hold of him).

It's a straight UP NIT MOVE. I have also turned right around and walked out before, but not before buying a candy bar and a coke to flash the bankroll walking out with me.
One time I got a phone call that so-an-so wanted to play me and I should come to the pool room. Well they were still an hour away and I was in bed. So I told my friend that I wouldn't play for less than $2000. They agreed so I got dressed and went to the pool room. When they arrived they had a backer and they said they only wanted to play for $500. Then they tried to switch up the game and the player and yada yada.
After 30 minutes of barking and telling them what nits they were to get me up for $500 we finally made a game for $400 and I won 3 sets and they quit me. I was getting spotted and they wanted me to come off the spot.
Now I normally would but these guys had me so hot that I told them if they want to play more then they need to bet more and the spot wasn't changing. I said, I have $2000, plus what I won from you is $3200. Bet it all or hit the road.
They were pissed off and I said next time don't wake me up.

I think Reed did the right thing. Screw 'em. Corey, you rock, your stakehorses don't. After all the barking on here about spotting champions we see that the first time a CHAMPION shows up it's tail between the legs time. And don't bother barking at me - I am in China and if you want to bring Corey here we can bet a couple hundred thousand RMB and I can find someone take a spot as an unknown and we can see if you get to take some of the surplus back home. I m sure I can get Yang to come over - he plays cheap.

CreeDo said:Not sure what the point of this post was, going out of your way to bash corey over some woofing from 2 years ago.

THAT STORY HAPPENED TO HIM WITH JOHN SCHMIDT IN MOBILE BUT NOT TO HIM WITH COREY DEUEL IN COLUMBUS,OHIO..THATS A FACT JACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I KNOW REED FARELY WELL HE IS A GOOD GUY AND A GOOD GAMBLER..BUT IF HE WANTS THIS GAME WITH COREY HE HAS GOT IT...100 PERCENT.........HIM AND HIS RIGHT HAND MAN COACH CAN COME UP AND PLAY ANYTIME THEY WANT.....
ironman said:Years ago I was playing pretty sporty on the bar box and had just won a very fluky $5000 at the horse track and of course I wanted everybody to know it and wanted everyone in Denver except Medina to fire at it.
About this time a huge blizzard hit Colorado and we were all just sort of stuck in the pool room when at early afternoon I get a call from an old scuffler we called Indian Carl. Carl could play a little on the barbox and came up with pretty good backers from time to time. He was a riot too.
Well, Carl tells me he has a guy there with a big roll wanting to back him for like 100-200 a game which was good action in those days and I wasn't getting any play around Denver anyway. Just one problem, Carl is in Laramie Wyo which is 123 miles north of Denver. Being the genious that I am, I said sure, grabbed a buddy of mine and off to Laramie we went.
The blizzard was brutal and as we got into the mountains on 281 north of Ft Collins, I was getting real worried. We made it though and felt lucky to do so.
We found the bar and when we got there, there were three cars out front and the town was near closed. We walked in and I asked the bartender about Carl and he sort of smiled and led me to the end of the bar which was sort of hidden and there was Carl passed out on the floor. I was hot enough to fly to the moon.
We got Carl up and after a couple of minutes he recognized me as he started to come around. I asked him where this big backer was and if he was ready to play. He says, you got the money to play"? I said sure and flashed a big roll at him and he just smile a toothless smile and said, "he got a call and had to take off, I'm reall sorry". Then without any hesitation he asks, "bud, things ain't going to good, loan me a hundred will ya?"
After ranting and raving for a few minutes, the bar tender told me I should leave or he was calling the cops. I explained that I had just driven 123 miles to play this goof and it took 51/2 hours in blinding snow. He suggested I drive back and didn't look like the type to give a lot of shit.
It is funny now, but back then it wasn't as I drove about 11 hours in a blinding blizzard to loan a drunk $100. So, John, at least you were smart enough to come away with something.

Ironman, were you in Denver when Grady and Scott "The Shot" each had their poolrooms there?
ironman said:I'll never under any circumstance own a motorcycle.
jay helfert said:I don't disagree with you. Reed NEEDS the Wild 8 for all the above reasons. Very similar to what CJ experienced when he tried to comeback after a long layoff. And CJ was a "World Beater".
