Remembering when "cut throat" was a fun game.

Does anyone remember the game "cut throat"? The game where 3 people are designated a group of 5 balls (1-5,6-10,11-15) and the object is to knock everyone else's balls off the table. I used to have alot of fun playing with my buddies. Back then it was a game, no one was very good and a game could last long enough to have fun. Fast forward to lastnight I ran into one of my old friends and he wanted to play "cut throat" I had all but forgot about that childhood past time. So he, my girlfriend and myself decided we'd have fun remembering the old days. The good 'ol days were fun only because we could only bang balls around. There should be a skill level limit on playing. After 8 games where I was the only person on the table I became the a$$hole of the bunch and that wasn't very fun for me. I believe the days of cut throat fun are over for me. It was fun while it lasted. Anyone else have childhood games that are just not the same anymore?

I had to stop playing cutthroat years ago. I'll still run a couple on 'em if they insist :D

try taking 3 balls and giving them each 6. it'll last a little longer anyway...:)

I played that a few onths ago after not playing for about a year and a half or so. I ran out 3 racks, I even made 4 of my balls before I finished the games off lol. I am an ass.

Eric.

word, it's just not the same if you're going to run out if you get to the table because then noone wants to play with ya

Dang, I miss that game. last time I played that game was with my pal and his wife. Basically, the two of them ganged up on me since I was a major threat. I was at a loss since I always had the last group of balls and had to watch helplessly as they finish off my remaining balls. so we switch to 9-ball and 8-ball to make it all fair and more competitive, 2 versus 1 format. it was like a hold'em style for me as I pounce on every shot and opportunity given to me on the table. gladly those games worked in my favor. vengeance is so sweet. :D

try to play handicap cutthroat. either have a 2 ball disadvantage or bankshots on your opponents balls. that would level the playing field. :D

I recalled that game as High Low Middle. I have a table at my house and when my son-in-law has occasional poker nights and I play with his buddies, it seems that is the game they play after being knocked out of the poker tourney, since the pool table is in the same room we play cards in.

When I play with them I change it up a little where you have to MAKE your own balls rather than the other players balls and I have to make mine in rotation and bank the last one. At least its more a game that way. Not only is there more traffic to navigate when you only have 5 balls to shoot at, but going in rotation around the traffic is a challenge as well.

Last time I played cutthroat was at a party and some brilliant drunk observed that the game can be played by 5 people, each with 3 balls ... the only troubles were :

- nobody could remember who followed who in the rotation,
- nobody could remember what balls they had,
- nobody could remember what balls anyone else had,
- one game took several hours.

I do seem to recall having fun, if fun is defined as laughing till your sides hurt.

Dave, not the drunk who suggested the game, just a drunk who tried to play

I remember cutthroat from WAY back in the day, and it was fun. The problem is that once a player gets to a certain level of proficiency, it doesn't matter what handicap you give if a player is a favority to run out everytime he comes to the table. Definitely a game for C players and below.

How about a handicap of 3 rail bank shot? I hope that solves the problem :D

I still play it from time to time when I am at my fathers house, he says he likes it because that way one person doesn't have to sit out while a game goes on. Now I'm trying to get him hooked on 3 Ball :D

We still play if we are out with friends, but I prefer 8Ball, that way I can make it look like a close game.:)

Playing opposite-hand is a pretty good spot if the other players can make a ball or two. And sometimes you don't even have to let on that you're doing it. It's good practice too.

I remember my dad saying it was fun in a "Banger-Sorta-Way". I get asked to play almost all the time. It can be hard for people to make it worth while.
IMO,

Family Fun ......

My Wife, Grandson, and I will play cut-throat when it's just the three of us ... They always gang-up on me and I "lay down" some too, so it makes for quality family time ... The Grandson is getting a lot better now and I don't lay down much for him when we play heads-up ...

The Game I haven't played in many years is Kelly Pool or Pea Pool, with a group of guys, for drinks or small dollars ... It can be a lot of fun for the average player ...

I like cut throat alot and do take it easy if the other players are not at my skill level. I try silly stuff and what not.

But.........if I keep losing cause of doing silly shots and the other players start razzing me like'"I thought you could play" or " I thought you are good" I open a fresh can of Whoop Ass and serve it up.

I haven't heard that name Cut throat in many many years...so long ago i forgot how to play !!!!!!!! LOL

I enjoy the game. It is painfully easy if you are allowed to shoot my own balls. When I play with my friends, I am not allowed shoot my own balls, it is a foul if I do.
