Glancing at the tournament roster, I get the impression that while there are many top players in this tournament, there are an incredible number of lesser known players.

Why are there so many lesser known players playing in this tournament? Are there particular reasons for this?

Danny Kuykendall of AZ Billiards Main Forum fame has already won his first match. Congrats Danny!

Thanks,
JoeyA

The reason why there aren't too many big names is that the tournament is 12K added with $100 entry fee, its really become more of a regional tournament instead of the national event it was 80's and early 90's.

Joey,
For years, the Reno Open (also known as the Sands-Regency Open) used to boast strong fields. For some reason, over the past 7-8 years or so, more and more top pros have elected not to participate. There is still usually 15-20 top shelf players, but more and more, I think the complexion of this tournament is evolving into more of a "poor man's US Open. But it's still stronger than a shortstop haven. The players there can play in a large nationally known (by the fans of pooldom at least) tournament and they can also sort of have the family tug along for a "vacation" in Casino, er, I mean Reno.

Let's just hope it keeps running. It's been hosted since June 1985. We don't want it to go the way of the old Eastern States, The Glass City Open, Rakm Up Classic, etc.

The entry fees and the added money makes this a $50,000.00 tournament. That is nothing to sneeze at. A friend of mine suggested I go to the Reno Open; that it's lots of fun. I wonder what the payouts are?

Classics like this are rare. I wish it were closer.

Kim Davenport won this a few years ago, and it paid $12,500.00.... He had one of those large poster copies of the check hanging in his pool room...It was like 4 or 5 years ago give or take...It's always around $12,000 for first.....

Not around 1990, it was around $20,000 for first back then. Kim won this tournament back then as well. Back then the Sands Casino was adding $20, 000 to this event and the entry was $300. They were getting very close to a full field of 128 players. My point is that in 20 years which is about how long this event has been running. Added monies should go up, not down.

It's cheap to get into and if you are already in the hotel for the amateur tournaments, an entry of $125 seems not so bad. The room rate is $21/night and $34/night on the weekend. The hotel adds $26,500 and it guarantees $15,000 to first place. 100% of entry fees go to the prize fund.

Not quite

The total payout will not quite make it a 50,000 as they did not get 200 playerswhich payouts are based on except the $15,000 first place. Only 167 showed.
Main payouts advertised on 200\

1st, 15000
2nd 8000
3rd 5500
4th 4500
5-6 3500
7-8 3000

They do add more

They add 26,500, last time I checked that is more than 20,000. Although I agree over the years 1st place only went up to 15000.(which u were in correct on that too) To be honest I do not every remember 300 entry or 20000 first place. The Sands always want as many people as possible to show up and play and gamble. Cheap entry, cheap rooms, Make sense in a gambling town, rignt? I have played in some that were up to 250 not 128.
Also remember pool is in a downswing now which probably ads to less entries.

Kim Davenport has won this tournament 3 times... Dec 1990, June 1997 and June 2002.

Reno Added Money

At the players meeting for the USPPA Pro-Am this year, Tony Annagoni announced that the added money from the Sands was increasing next year to benefit both the Pro-am and the Open.

I don't remember all the details but there was talk of more added money for both events, a break-pot with a Chevy 4x4 truck plus some $$$ for the USPPA event, and a bonus of $2500(??) for anyone who wins both the Pro-am and the open that will go up by the same amount annually until someone does win both.

The pro-am was a fun event and the hotel was cheap. Though I was disappointed I missed the cash by 1 stinkin' round in both the Thursday Warm-up and the Pro-Am, I found satisfaction in knocking out 2 people from each. :)

i WONDER why the front page of AZ says they add 12K?

Also, I was looking in the Tournament Announcement forum and there was no RENO OPEN advertisement.

That's a pool player's hotel rate for sure. I saw where another poster insinuated that they only pay 8 places.... (out of 160 players?)

Yes you are correct they will have a break pot with a Chevy Silverado as the prize ,and you don't have to stay at the hotel to qualify for any added money or promotions that the usppa or Sands will offer for the pool tournament ..

Check out the USPPA website, Joey, and click on RENO OPEN #45 GREEN BLOCK: http://www.usppa.com/

There is some wording on the tournament poster that says "based on 200 players." I don't know if that has anything to do with your question, but I thought I'd show it to you! :)

1 large instead of 2 smaller ones

I heard that the USPPA may change the Reno tournment and have only one per year, with a larger added amount. (heard 50k added)

That would bring out the major players.

Still 167 is a great turnout for a tournament, wish I could go.

This tournament used to be 20K added with a $300 entry, but not for some time. How far back are you thinking? I can tell you 15-20 years ago this tournament was on par with the U.S. Open as an elite event. Its mainly a regional tournament now, thats the point I was making. I know that I am not mistaken about those numbers, I used to attend this tournament twice a year for probobly 4-5 years straight.
According to AZ the Sands has only 12K added this year.

WHOA! Am I reading this right? $60 to enter the Reno Open tournament if entry postmarked by Nov 13? What a bargain? I thought it was $100 or $150 That combined with the $21 per night hotel is the bargain of the year, just as long as you don't have a major casino gambling problem. :D

Snag one of those low, non-refundable Internet air fares, bring some MRE's for a few days and you have a pool player's dream come true. :D :D
