I honestly think the event should close up shop entirely. Though, I get along with him well, I must say that since Anagoni got invloved with the event, it has gone downhill. I have played in 8-10 of them, and they progressivly get worse. I have played in tournaments because I love it and to make a living.

There is no living to made in that Reno event and there is little left to love about it.

One day, you'll come out of the shadows and actually talk to me instead of publishing nonsense characterisations.

There are few supporters out there as strong as I.

You really "know" very little about it.

They desperately need to shorten this to a five day tournament. The way it is now, you must be there for a full week. Start the tournament on a Wednesday and you'll see more players!

Jay,

I agree to shorten the play dates would help, but, I would also like to see the field restricted to 128 if there it changed to a 5 day event and raise the entry fee to $200 or even $300.

The lack of quality players was very evident.

Why would any one from the MidWest or East Coast come to Reno?

A lot of good players in the West Coast didn't show up!

It snowed on Friday and Saturday and chains were required going over the pass. This prevented people from driving up. The snow is also the reason why there are no more accustats in Reno; Pat Flemming crashed his van with all of the equipment and vowed to never come in the Winter time again.

I understand what you're saying, but I didn't see you there either???? You give it a big thumbs down, but if you're not part of the solution...you're part of the problem. Overall, it was a successful event and had 20 more players than last year.

There were only 3 more than last year. 162 and 165

I agree with Jay that starting on Wed and ending on Sunday would improve this tournament. 162 players, double elimination shouldn't take a week to do. Too much downtime and while I know the casino is looking to bust as many of the players as they can while the tournament runs, they have to shear the sheep a little less heavy. Too many players are going to this tournament and leaving bloody from the dice and cards.

Say, I was just watching the SVB vs. Montal & Archer vs. Tadd video on OTBNTV.com and I was saddened to see that there were only like 4 people in the audience!!!

WTF! Best players in the world-no draw whatsoever.

That's 4 more than there were at the Qlympics!!!

That's the only thing that kept me away the last couple years. I just can't take a full week off that often. I do take a couple "real" (non-pool-related) vacations each year and, as a result, I have to limit myself on how much vacation time I can take for pool tournaments. If I could go up there Tuesday night, and only have to take 3 days off, I could probably do it.

There are very few events out here on the west coast and the Sands is one of them. I love going to the Sands tournament every year. Every time I've gone I've had a lot of fun and got to see some great pool. This past year I couldn't go due to being the new kid on the block at work. Hopefully next year I will be able to play in it:) .

Jay is right. Forget all the USPPA tournments there-have those in Sacramento and leave the Reno as one open tournment. Also raising the entry fee is a good Idea because the rooms are so cheap, one lady who has worked there for over 20 years said that they will go as low as $12/night sometimes. With that being the case it dosent cost a ton of $$ to go there. What ever is going on isnt helping that gig, it wont last much longer. on Thursday night there were only 3 people playing 21 and one guy playing craps, all $5 red chips, and only 1 of the 4 poker tables was open.

The Sands dosent give a rats ass abot pool, they want the gaming, years ago before the Indian Casinos people would get in action there because it was their chance to play now its everywhere there is no reason to gamble there, I live in Vegas and ignore all the casinos, if you dont your done.

One post here said the weather on the weekend was bad and that is correct but there was nobody there during the week when the weather was ok and there were good matches,

I hate to say it but that tournment needs to be cancelled or fixed, obviously I vote to fix it, if it stays on its current track its history, and winter is the wrong time too.

That is sad that you think the event should close up. I'm glad that you are not in charge of it, or we wouldn't get to see any more world class pool once a year in Reno. Tony Annigoni(correct spelling for future reference)has plans to make this event bigger next year.

There is no living to made in that Reno event and there is little left to love about it.

I went and looked at the payouts this year. How many tournaments could you travel to and break even/make a little money getting 17-24th place. The expenses are low and the payout is actually quite good, especially for someone in CA. I would say that watching 2 of the best players in the world right now playing in the finals is plenty to love about Reno. What more could you ask for?

One day, you'll come out of the shadows and actually talk to me instead of publishing nonsense characterisations.

I'm not sure what shadows you are refering to??? My only point was that you started a thread with negative commentary about attendance, but you were not even there to see the attendance or play in the tourney. The video makes it look a lot worse than it was.

There are few supporters out there as strong as I.

You are a local regional touring pro:confused: ...who rarely ever makes a trip for any tournaments in Northern CA. I know because I'm at most of the tournaments up here as a spectator or a player.

You really "know" very little about it.

Honestly, I know plenty about it. I was staff for the Reno Open. I never said anything negative towards you. I just think it's to easy to sit there and criticize when you should have been at the tournament in the first place. You could have made you're commentary on the tournament in a much more positive fashion. Pool needs tournaments such as the Reno Open.

Good Room Deals on Travelocity and Orbitz ...

Very True ... I usually reserve my room through Travelocity or Orbitz and always beat any price the Sands quotes over the phone or on their website ... A couple years back, I got my room for $9.00 per night (Sunday -Thursday) ... Just don't eat the food or breath the air and you'll make out like a champ ...

Corey, you have hit the nail on the head. I remember when it was mostly volunteers who ran the tournament and it started on Wed. The Dec. 1998 event had over 300 players including most of the Phillipinos. There were matches being played around the clock and you could see great matches early in the tournament. The Sands is a terrible place to gamble. Go down the street to the Peppermill.

Man, I know exactly what you're talking about. I have this other little voice in my head, the one that makes me do and say the wrong things. This little voice has a mind and will of it's own. It makes me eat that second and third helping, push chips into the pot with my evil right hand (when I know that I should Fold) and shoot the wrong shot when playing pool (this little voice takes TOO many fliers.... imo)

I wish this ill behaved voice and it's actions would just stop. Stop at once. Cease & Desist and leave me in peace, good health and with money in my pocket.

I want to take this opportunity to apologize if I have taken some of my pool frustration out on ABall or Tony Annagoni.

Tony is a good guy and I get along with him quite well.

The Reno tournament used to be a tournament where I counted the days to attend. Today, it can come and go without any consequence to me. Even the US Open came and went with very little disappointment.

This is a real tough business, like any other, and staying motivated is supremely difficult when one has to struggle like this for years on end. Sometimes there is light at the end of the tunnel, but it dims shortly after it starts.

This has been my pool story for almost 20 years.

Again, I apologize to everyone if I knocked something so dear to them.

It also might help Tony's feelings if you learned how to spell his name. lol
I took offense to your statement there were 4 spectators. When you make that kind of statement it hurts future attendance when people consider going there. There were obviously a lot more people in attendance just by the clapping that went on after a game. The vidieo was dark and only focused on one part of a row of the stands. You know the stands are up and extend the length of the room, also a lot of people rather sit along the wall in chairs and people are constantly coming in and out from the door. Attendance is down for sure but it is still a great tournament run by good people with good intentiions with more perks scheduled in the future , like more added money.

Because Reno is what Reno is, a dying town, the players go there to play in the tournament, not to be spectators. Because of the length of the tounament by the time for the finals most are gone or are packing to leave. Only the die hard fans are left to watch. I for myself will leave shortly after the tounament is over for me. Not much to do in Reno. I just want to get home.

Reno is truly a dying town, as you said ... The Indian Casinos in nearby California have pretty much put an end to gambling in Reno and Lake Tahoe ... I was just there for a couple of days and the downtown (strip) area was a ghost town ...
That said, I would hate to see the Tournaments at the Sands suddenly end ...
