Reports from Philippines

yeah I regret Stepanov was forced to refuse and doesn't take part in the event. Well, he didn't want to be thrown out of Eurotour. Immonen and Hohmann don't play there now, but Raj does. So time will show.
All the players are still not here, on a way from Japan they got somewhere and arrive only tonight. The tournament starts tomorrow 2 pm. Once again, I hope Chris aka pooladdict shows up there and we arrange sort of AZers meeting. Bandido will be there as well I believe.
So see you there guys!

QC Invasion Team Philippines vs Team World event just started. Watched the whole furst day. It opened with a team match, 4 vs 4. Then proceeded by a double and two singles, Pagulayan vs Fu Jianbo, Williams/Hundal vs Bustamante/Kiamko, Alcano vs Yang Chin Shun. Surprisingly only Pags managed to get smth for the home team, so the first day ended 1-3.
The racking was a bit far from ideal sometimes, I think we have seen at least 7 golden breaks for the day. 4 or 5 of them in last game (Pagulayan - Fu).
Met pooladdict and bandido there, also another Norwegian I got acquainted in One Side, Henrik. Got a nice chat.
Most likely I will have to miss the second day because I will be away to Pangsanjan waterfalls, but will definitely be there in TriNoma MAll again to watch the final day - all singles!

What time do the matches start? Is it in a convention hall or in the middle of the mall? Also how much are tickets?

thanks

3rd attempt. trying guys but wifi is acting up. ain't giving up though.

Some guys have already reported from the first day, so I dont have much to add about that. Only that the table playes very fast, and the cue ball never stops rolling. Some of the players are struggling a lot with position because of that..

The QC challenge is taking place in a huge mall, in an atrium. People are watching in three or four floors, and like always - even if all the players are stars here - everybody is cheering loudly whenever Efren shoots a ball or lifts an eyebrow. He has a unique position, and most of the times he is very patient with the fans, poses for photos and writes autographs.

Yesterday I believe it got a bit too much, there were just too many people who wanted a piece of him. However, he never gets tired of pool. In the evening, after some long hours at the mall, my friend Henrik got a text asking if he wanted to play Efren. We were an hour away, but no problem, Efren could wait. So Henriks dream came true, and Efren added some pesos to his pension fund.

Going back to the mall for the second day now to see if the players have adjusted to the fast table and perhaps Team PI can give the rest of the world a run for the money

Oh, and I almost forgot. Even if you are not a die-hard pool fan, its almost worth going there just to enjoy the two models who brush the table between the matches. Only in the Philippines..

While the Filipinos seems to be floundering in the QC vs. the rest of the World match, their junior counterparts
are all doing well in Vegas. The Philippines sent 3 players to the World Junior 9-Ball Championships and all are
doing well. Zemonette Aryan has a seat locked in the semis for the girls while both Jericho Banares and 14 year
old Jonas Magpantay are in the quarterfinals for the boys...

(Update) Late RP victories narrow gap with International side in 9-ball tourney
12/03/2008 | 06:55 PM

Philippines - Back-to-back victories late Wednesday enabled the Filipinos to get back in contention in the the QC Invastion: Quezon City-Philippines vs the World Grand "Villards" Showdown pool tournament held at the Trionama Mall in Quezon City.

Wins in the team event and the second singles match of Day Two helped the RP team cut down the International side's lead to 5-4.

Ronnie Alcano, Francisco "Django" Bustamante, Warren Kiamco, and Alex Pagulayan teamed up to win 7-3 over the quartet of Charlie Williams of the US, Raj Hundal of India, Yang Ching-shun of Chinese-Taipei, and Fu Jianbo of China.

In the next match, Lee Van Corteza defeated Williams 7-4.

It was a welcome change of events for the hosts who were down 4-1 at one point in the race-to-nine series.

Earlier in the day, Efren "Bata" Reyes and Corteza got back from a 0-2 start to win 7-4 over Thorsten Hohmann of Germany and Rodney Morris of the US.

Those wins cushioned the losses by Dennis Orcollo and Roberto Gomez.

Mika Immonen of Finland bounced back from an early two-rack deficit to slip past Orcollo 7-6. Later, Wu Chia-Ching of Chinese-Taipei routed Gomez 7-1.

On Tuesday, the only RP victory was courtesy of Pagulayan who defeated Fu 7-6.

It was all Team World from there. Hohmann, Morris, Immonen and Wu defeated Reyes, Corteza, Orcollo and Gomez 7-4 in the team event. Yang prevailed over Alcano 7-5. Williams and Hundal tipped Bustamante and Kiamco 7-4.

After surrendering the lag and losing the first two racks, Reyes and Corteza got their acts together and claimed four straight games to seize the lead.

The Morris-Hohmann tandem countered with back-to-back points to even the match at 4, but the Filipinos would not be denied of the victory as Reyes and Corteza took the next three frames to prevail.

"We shot pretty well today compared to yesterday," Reyes said. "We don't want to be embarrassed in front of the home crowd. We'll give it our best shot from hereon."

RP rides Bata, Django victories to tie Int'l team in 9-ball showdown

Email this | Email the Editor | Print | Digg this | Add to del.icio.us MANILA, Philippines - It could have been a rabbit that was pulled off this magician's hat.

Efren "Bata" Reyes came to the country's rescue with an important win on Thursday that helped Team Philippines pull even with the International side in the QC Invasion: Quezon City-Philippines vs The World Grand "Villards" Showdown at the Trinoma Mall in Quezon City.

Reyes, more popularly known as "the Magician", weaved his wand to take down Rodney Morris of the US 7-4.

The victory leveled the Ryder Cup-style tournament to six wins each for the locals and the foreigners.

Earlier, Francisco "Django" Bustamante escaped with a 7-6 cliffhanger over Raj Hundal of India, just after Warren Kiamco lost 7-4 to Thorsten Hohmann of Germany.

With a stalemate after 12 matches, the first side that gets to nine wins will take home the championship purse worth $40,000 (P1.96 million).

The next matches will be between Roberto Gomez versus Yang Ching-shun of Chinese-Taipei; a team event pitting Bustamante, Gomez Alex Pagulayan and Dennis Orcollo versus the quartet of Hundal, Yang, Mike Immonen of Finland and Wu Chia-Ching of Chinese-Taipei; and a singles match between Orcollo and Charlie Williams of the US.

If the showdown isn't decided after the Orcollo-Williams face-off, the next matches will feature another team duel between the group of Reyes, Kiamco, Ronnie Alcano and Lee Van Corteza and the foursome of Hohmann, Morris, Williams, and Fu Jianbo of China.

If the score is tied at 8, a team event will decide the winner, with the RP side represented by Alcano, Gomez, Kiamco and Pagulayan taking on Hundal, Morris, Williams and Wu. - GMANews
