retirement overseas and pool

Years ago there was an article in BD about billiards academies in S. Korea, where they taught strokes that were amazing on a routine basis. Have you heard of or been to one of those? I gather that one of the things you like about S. Korea is perhaps the women situation. Apart from that, what do you find that you like in S. Korea? What's it like to live there?
Not to Hijack this thread BUT yes the women situation here is what I like and the fact that I can go to Thailand, PI, Singapore or anywhere else for that matter in a few hr's.
What's these clinics you speak of sir, I haven't been palying long enough to know where to look here. If you can send me some info I may just find ya one day and buy ya a beer over a couple races..

I am really looking forward to this, and especially joining the tournament in Cebu. That will be awesome.
Hope to get some time to play some one-pocket with Efren this time too, and for once make him pay me

A foreigner in Manila can own a condo but not an apartment or any other real estate unless married to a Filipina. There's a 60-40 allowable equity for foreigners and since condos are communal, 40% of it can be owned by foreigners. But you will need a special visa for eligibility. That is my understanding.
The dollar will go a long way in Manila where the standard of living (health care included) is way below 1st world. In fact, there is a lot of medico tourism flourishing now - lasik, cosmetic surgery, dental, etc.
Manila poolroom culture is universal. There will always be somebody who will want your money. But what is great here is who you will see in the poolrooms squaring it off - from Efren to unknowns, all with intimidating skill. You will always find friends in pool rooms who will play for beer.
And with the advent of Philippine travelling tournaments in the provinces, it will be easy to assimilate with a group and feel safe to trust the hotel and restaurant choices of the group. Edwin told me that BMPAP will accredit a travel tour agency to take care of discounted fare and accommodations for provincial tournaments - a move that will truly bolster tourism especially among Asians.
If not contented with Manila, air fare will not be very expensive to go to other Asian countries to follow say the Guinness tour.

Miami is a great place to live and visit, but retire here? naw I think a lower cost of living place is more in order.
For those in the know, what is the current cost of living in Manila? Can you please break it down some? A buddy of mine who is 20 and I were talking about this very topic last week and I was telling him that if i was 20 and had no responsibilities, id be tempted to take a year off and live in Manila.
housing costs? food costs? does he need a car? is it safe?
you can leave out the costs of hookers and pool gambling . I think my buddy can figure that out if he goes.

One bedroom furnished condominium in Makati, just outside the Central Business District, will run you around US$250-300. Big Mac Meal with large fries and large coke is around US$2.75. A car will be nice but not a necessity in Metro Manila as you can take the train and short walks to get you around. I drive only if I need to load heavy or bulky stuff. A scooter is advisable if you mind walking. Safety? As with anywhere in the world just stay away from the rough parts of town. Maybe Roy or Jay can answer you better than I can. But, since you're a poolplayer, you'll probably end up running around with us.

I'd say The PHILIPPINES, and for a second choice the Philippines! I've been all over and this is it for me. Friendly people, beautiful girls, low prices, and they speak my language. I'm still not to good with Spanish.
The overall cost of living is comparatively low to that in the USA. It probably is more expensive to live in Manila (compared to outlying districts), but still not bad. Manila is crowded and polluted and not as clean as most American cities, but still there are many nice areas as previously mentioned. I like the outlying areas but the pool action isn't quite as good. In Manila you can get a game anywhere, and surprisingly there are many players who aren't champions.
As far as safety goes, I feel safer in Manila than in most cities in the US at night. I have walked the streets cue in hand, night and day. You will be accosted by street vendors and the like, but so what. I look them in the eye and say no, and keep walking. I have had no problems, except with a money changer who tried to scam me. I caught her in the act, and gave her a little scare, poolroom style.

Smoking in Philippines
Not to be a wet blanket, but how is smoking in the Philippines ? I would prefer not to put up with the smoke if I don't have to. We have gotten spoiled here in Southern Calif.

Arizona is also mostly SMOKE FREE except private clubs like VFW, Moose, Elks, American Legion, etc.

Meaning, you can't smoke inside restaurants and bars.

Yeah, I guess we will play this time too. He asked over and over again during the world championships, and I kept turning him down, so guess I will have to match up with him this time, just to make him happy

Besides A filipino freind of mine told me you had to marry a local to stay in the philippines for longer than six months. We just discussed this last week. If thats true then it might put a damper on his plans to retire to the philiipines.
