so i just received my new cue from dick neighbors on saturday and thought i'd put up a review. first i'd like to say that mr. neighbors is a first class person to deal with. every email answered promptly, every question answered. the cue was delivered as close to the promised date as he could - there was a problem with the original handle and it had to be replaced which added a little time. pictures were sent at each step in the process. and the cue was delivered just as ordered. i sent him some piss poor sketches and pictures of cues that resembled what i wanted and gave him my shooting cue to use for measurements and he turned that into my new cue.
the cue has a bem forearm, gaboon ebony points and butt sleeve, all inlays are real mother of pearl. The butt cap is aegis and ferrules are lbm. the veneers are black, grey, blue, and natural. the joint is 5/16x18 stainless with an insert (not dick's standard but what i wanted). the cue weighs in at a hefty 21 oz. and change. the original weight was to be 20.5 but the original maple handle gave dick some problems and had to be swaped out for a purpleheart handle which added some weight. also the cue i wanted is a larger diameter than dick usually builds so more weight again. if any one is interested i have other measurements but i didn't think that was pertinent here. all that being said the cue hits so solidly and is balanced so well i have to say the added weight has not been an issue (i have played with 21 oz cues before so it's not a big deal and dick offered to make some changes but i told him to leave it and i'm gald i did). the first pic is of the forearm in it's raw stage, the second is the forearm attached to the original maple handle. next is the cue together with new purpleheart handle then with inlays. the last pictures are the finished cue. overall i am thouroughly impressed by mr. neighbors and his work. i reccomend him to anyone looking to purchase a custom cue done in short time, for a great price and made with a lot of care and pride.

Nice cue

Very nice looking cue. Is it just the last picture, but it looks like the rings are off a little? Still a mighty fine loking cue. How does she play?

the rings are off by millimeters. it looks bad in the pic but if you're actually looking at the cue it doesn't look that bad. the cue plays like a monster. it has a very nice, firm hit.

Dick is a nice guy.

I would like to see that better ringwork on each side of the joint, but otherwise very nice.

Nice cue.

thanks for the compliments on the cue. a few other people have said that about the ringwork but i just really like the way the simple balck and steel look together.. and yes dick is a great guy:thumbup:

I think it looks great without the ringwork on each side of the joint. I think with that there the design would look unbalanced.

Dang, he put a buzz ring, then sleeve a purple handle in there.
That's a lot of work and craftsmanship to get the balance right.
That's a player built for life.

Great guy to work with, I have known Dickey for 20+ years, when I lived in Cincinnati,he did all my work no natter what I needed, His cues are allways top notch, an he will work a design anyway you like it,His prices for repairs or building new cues is more than resonable. If anyone is interested in a RHN he has a web site dickeycues.com if I am not mistaken an dont be afraid to contact him with an idea. If I wanted a tip put on a cue or wanted a joint refaced or replaced I would drive to his shop an hang out an watch him work an shoot the shit with him while he was working or watch him put inlay work in ,He had a customer in about 03 that had a cue made for his wife with 6 points, lots of turquoise inlays an was allmost complete an called Dickey up an said my wife has a collection of Elephants from India an she only like them with there trunks up which in hindo is good luck or something like that an asked if Dickey could work it into the theme,he got hold of a jeweler an got 6 small silver elephants with there trunks up an inlayed them inline with the points it turned out fantastic, I rate Dickey at AAA+ for a cue maker that flys under the radar.::thumbup:

dick is the man. my cue is nothing short of amazing and he made that design perfectly from some crappy drawings i sent him. make sure you post pics and some info when you get yours.

Ringwork...

This cue is what we now call a tribute cue. The joint looks
pretty much like a Bushka, which is certainly what I would prefer
on a Bushka tribute cue. YMMV

i hate to say "tribute" cue, i like to say "inspired" by. i say this because the design was definately inspired by some of the older cue smiths like balabushka, szambotti, et.al. but it's not a tribute to any one person's style. whatever you call the style i was not prepared for the overwhelming response i've gotten both here and out playing. i see so many new cues with really fancy designs or wrapless, and i just thought most people (especially younger players) would slam the design for being boring. but everyone that sees it goes nuts. i really thought i'd be the only one.
