I am very sorry to hear about Mr. Gilmer's passing. I did not know him but this is becoming a far too frequent theme here on AZB lately. I hope the trend of our friends and colleagues passing ends quickly.

RIP to all our brothers and sisters that have passed in this last year. They will all be missed! Condolences to all friends and families.

Dave

This one's for you, Professor: I'll Fly Away.

I am still sad to learn of this news. I remember one year he contacted me about the Southern Billiards Jamboree. He was so excited about putting together his pool event at this pool room. I had contacted InsidePOOL about it, and they did an article about the Jamboree in their magazine. It brought him such joy. I remember him saying, "Imagine a little place like Starkville getting recognition for our Southern Billiard Jamboree in InsidePOOOl!" He was so thrilled!

My condolences to RH Gilmer's family and friends. I had met RH a few times over the years and he always carried himself as a gentleman.

This news came as quite a surprise to me. It just goes to show that things aren't always as they seem.

My first Mentor...

I was lucky enough to have played with him when he lived in Oklahoma. To this day I still use the break spot for 9 ball he showed me. He taught me a lot about life and pool. He was a truly remarkable man!

My condolences to his family...

I met The Professor years ago when I was just a teenager. He was a great guy. I have not seen him in years.

Thoughts and prayers are with Lil Sam and rest of his family.

Thanks for the info and the link. I signed the Legacy Online Guest Book.

I did not know that Jerry Slivka was a part of his family. Wow! Small world sometimes.

What a fine man the Professor was, and how educated he was. He was one smart cookie! RIP, Professor!

Just a bump to this thread as I read about the other Professor and his ill health. You know Grady once introduced RH as "the Real Professor" at DCC when he was pioneering the 10 ball ring game and software for it. I will never forget that as long as I live, as it really did give RH a great compliment and made him smile.

Unk taught many of us at MSU so much on and off the table...including myself how to draw the rock at 5:30am after watching him play a road player all night. Amazing his talent and personality. I don't think I have ever learned so much from just observing one person both on and off the table.

I will always miss you Unk, but your memories live on with me.

Shorty...and btw...RH is who nicknamed me Shorty :)

RH Gilmer's name came up in another thread, and I was just wondering...
was he any relation to Sam Gilmer?
The young guy who just won the amateur open at Super Billiards Expo?
I noticed he was repping RH Gilmer's pool room, Southern Billiards.

Sam is the Professor's son.

Sam's father was one hell of a guy. Can't say enough good things about him.

Professor Gilmer was the best

He was a full time Professor at Miss. State, owned and ran a great pool hall in Starkville, and ran a 24/7 bonding business. Guess he didn't get a lot of sleep, but was a SUPER human being and everyone lucky enough to know him sure does miss him. RIP my friend !
