Richard Black Merry Widow

Picked up my Dream cue the other day from Mr. Richard Black, below are the details and a little history behind the cue. I appologize for the long post, but I'm excited about the cue and wanted to give all the context I could.

Its Brazilian Rosewood forearm and butt, Amboyna Burl handle, the joint, butt cap and ferrules are elk horn, 3/8X10 SS pin. the overall is 60", 18.5oz. One of the shafts has a short(3/4") ferrule and is at 12.5mm(this is my playing shaft), the other is standard, both shafts have Black's medium tip. The oil finish on this lady requires a little more TLC but, I love the look and feel. There is some more cool history about the wood, that I shared in my first post about this cue a few months ago, here http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=427256

The cue design is mine with input from Richard, you won't find another Black Cue like this beauty!

The helmet engraved on the joint, is the only one like it in the world. The only other time the helmet logo went on a cue was for his "Helmet Cue" series that were made in the 90's, and those were inlaid. So, there are only 151 cues in existence that have the helmet logo on them, with this one being the only one engraved. This was not the reason I asked for the logo, I just like the way it looked, I got the history of the logo after he engraved it. I thought it was kinda cool and wanted to share with y'all.

When I first started thinking about the design I was hesitant to even ask Richard to make it, mostly because I've always heard he won't do cues like this. But, after talking with him about the design and reasons behind it, he took on the build.

The delivery was when he said it would be, actually early. Yes, AZ... A cue maker was EARLY!

We had quite a few conversations about tone woods and the different ways the energy waves interact and flow through the cue. Every detail of this cue was discussed and hand selected by me for specific characteristics I was looking for in the hit and feel of the cue. I had tons of questions about everything that has to do with cues and he was always accomadating and open with his knowledge. The man has so much passion for his craft, I couldn't help but be inspired every time we talked.

I must say, it was a pleasure and honor to work with Black on this cue.

After so much planning and thought going into the design, I had very high expectations for the hit and playability of the cue, almost unreasonable. Well... After putting in about 12hrs playing... This cue surpassed even my expectations. It's perfect for me, period.

Richard, again thank you so much for making my dream cue for me!

I have not seen that simple of a Black in many years come out of his shop. But your cue is just exactly what it is supposed to be. Simple and Classic. You have a very nice cue.

Very unusual, and nice cue. From the simple design, to the elk horn ferrules, to the oil finish, this has to be a one of a kind Richard Black. And a great choice of cuemakers. Other than Ernie G, I can't think of another cuemaker with Richard's length of pedigree. I'm sure you'll enjoy playing this one.

All the best,
WW

Here's a few Hoot,

David Kersenbrock, Pete Tascarella, Bill Schick, Dan Janes, Bill Stoud,... All were from the same general era as Richard...

I get your point Tim. However, Bill Stroud, no longer involved. Dan Janes, still making mostly production cues, not quite the custom level of the others. I don't think Pete started as early as Richard. As you can see, it's an elite list.

All the best,
H

I like the cue, but love how excited you are to tell the story behind it.

Was going to ask which ferrule length you liked. Then I noticed only one has been played. Can you tell us the thoughts behind the different lengths?

Very nice cue.

Richard always does quality work and you can trust him to deliver on time, or beforehand.

I've had him make me two cues...one in 1978 and another in 1981 and he is one of the best in the world.

I have several cues from various makers, but this one was the first cue I have ordered from the maker, to say I was excited about this cue is an understatement. I put in a lot of time researching the materials and specs I wanted and always had Black in mind but, I just didn't know if he would take on the build. I was lucky to have my dream cue made by a master. It was a fantastic experience all around!

One of the shafts has his standard 1" ferrule with the shaft at 13mm, this is a backup shaft, in case I didn't like my custom shaft which is 3/4" ferrule with the shaft at 12.5mm. I prefer shorter ferrules on my cue, but I also wanted options, just in case I didn't like the play of a short ferrule on a Black shaft. I have a few Blacks but none of them have the short ferrule, so I had no idea about the play of a short one. The 1" shaft will remain unchalked as I love the play of the 3/4". The short ferrule also came about in our conversations about the waves that flow through cues, I spoke briefly about this in my first post above. Lots of cue theory discussions and the short ferrule is what I wanted.

Btw, I'm a fan of your cues and have my eye on one that may become a part of my collection.

Richard and I talked about the one of a kind thing. There are some cues similar to this one but, none to this spec. So, yes... The finish, helmet, length, pin, elk horn make this a one of a kind Black cue. Making a one of a kind cue was not my intention, Richard asked me if it was my intention too, my answer to y'all is the same as I gave him, I just like what I like and it happens that it is usually different from most.

Yes, the man is a master at his craft!

Nice Cue I like the helmet. I'm pretty sure he made 50 for the states 50 for Europe and 50 for China. Each cue being unique but the wood selected. Enjoy your cue. Don

Jon,

Very cool cue and I love the touch with the helmet. I had one of those helmet cues and it was a great player. I will never forget I bought it from an add in the Billiard Digest classifieds. My how cue purchasing has changed in 20+ years.

Thanks for sharing.

I think it was Japan not China, but anyways.
Thanks for the compliment on the cue. The more I play with, the more I fall in love with it!

Thank you.

Now that had the cue a few months, I can honestly say, this is the best hitting cue I have ever played with! I realize it's a bias opinion, but I could care less. Black and I have spoke on many occasions about the cue and some upcoming builds I have planned, I couldn't have chosen a better maker(IMO), to build a relationship with.
