I'd like to hear some opinions on Rick Howard cues. I just bought one from a good friend of mine and i'm very impressed with the cue. The points are dead even, the wood is very high grade birdseye maple and cocobolo, and the finish is as good as you'll find. The best part is it hits so solid and it has a great balance and feel. I've never owned one of Rick's cues before, but i've read about them on this forum and everyone spoke highly of his cues.......

They are awesome cues. I have owned a bunch of them and I am sure I will own more in the future.
 
One of the best hitting cues I have ever played with. Solid cue maker and a great guy to work with. I have an six pointed tulip wood in to ebony and it plays great.

His work is second to none.

I have a 6 point cocobola and it was the best investment i've ever made in my pool career. Mine has the perfect balance of good looking but not flashy. Plays lights out, and I'm yet to hear one person say a dislike about any of his cues.
 
Rick Howards cues

Rick Howard makes one helluva nice cue. I own 3 of Rick's cues, and they all play great. You can't go wrong investing in or playing with one of his cues.
 
Tremendously underrated, IMO. I feel his cues are amoung the cleanest execution, best playing, & overall highest quality cues. There are a few builders who stand out above all others in terms of a great cue, and he's one of them in my mind. I don't know the guy, but have seen & hit with enough of his cues to say with certainty, the guy knows how to build a cue for players.

I have been playing with a RH for about 10 months and I love it. When I received the cue it was *exactly* the specs that I had asked for. Point work is great, balance is perfect, workmanship is top notch (look at it under a jeweler's loupe). I had him make me an third shaft with a 1/2 inch ivory capped ferrule 4.1 ounces, matching ringwork, hard tip, hit is great. Best wrap I ever felt on any cue (kangaroo).

I have another on order, due in a few months.

One of the most underrated cuemakers for sure, and a pro player as well.

Rick knows what a cue should be. Some pics below.

makes an awesum cue probably the best ive ever played with his shafts are so perfect put it in a lathe and c how straight they spin you probably wont be able to see them lol my last one got broken accidentally and i miss it badly in fact i want a plain jane playing cue with a leather wrap from rick if anyone has one for sale pm me thx in advance

When I was searching on what cue to purchase, people on AZ spoke highly of Rick Howard. Without a doubt, I can honestly say I couldn't have made a better choice. I bought my first cue about 2 years ago, after I played with it for a few months, I turn around and bought a jump/break twin. I absolutely love the way the cues play. If I had to do it over, it would be a no-brainer.

While Rick was building my cue, Rick and I spoke several times on the phone, for a pretty good while. He spoke to me like he knew me for years. He gave me some pointers about playing, which I really appreciate. The only knock I have on Rick is he takes his time and gets the cue perfect. not really a knock if you know what I mean. If you have any problems with the cue, he will fix it becuase his name is on the cue. You really gotta love that kind of warranty.
 
One of my favorites

I really like his cues. I have had 2 or 3 made and owned perhaps 4 or 5 other ones. I really like his cues and regret selling them. I played some of my best pool with a PJ BEM one that he made for me.

I'm sold on mine and i've only had it a week. The first night I played with it I was amazed at how it felt and played.

Will Get Better

Your cue will probably feel even better in a few months. Rick told me when I first got mine that it gets more comfortable after a time. Not sure if this is sales or marketing, but I haven't put mine down yet and it is going on 10 months.

The first time I played with mine it felt different than the cue i'd been playing with. I thought it was heavier, but when I weighed the cue it was as light or lighter than the cue I was used to using. I guess it was the balance or butt diameter or something and i'm sure that will go away as I play with it. One thing for sure is there is "0" vibration or feedback coming back as I hit the cue ball. It's very solid and i've noticed I can move the cue ball on stun shots and draw shots easier than with my previous regular player.

He told me this as well. I believe him. I believe this about all cues now. I really like the way he does his tips as well. I have had a bunch of different ones from him and they all play great.

I'm glad to hear you like the cue. I guess 3 EROs out of a 5 game session the first night you get the cue says a lot. I would never have sold the cue if I weren't getting another Howard to replace it with.. but you already know that.
I think the solid feedback or lack of vibration comes from Rick's construction method .. the slightly larger diameter butt..with compound taper and the flat faced big pin joint. It all comes together to make a GREAT playing cue. Not to mention the great woods he uses in his cues. As you know I play with Predator shafts and I can play with Rick's shafts with very little adjustment because of his taper. He makes a GREAT cue and I'm glad you are happy with it. I'm very happy with it's replacement also. I just wanted to try one of his wrapless cues.

I love Ricks cues. Here is one of the nicest Plain Jane's I've ever owned. I called it "The Black Pearl".

I'm anxiously awaiting the second cue I have coming from Rick, and it will be special indeed!

This cue will be an ebony on ebony 6 pointer with Maple/Black/Maple veneers. The cue will have a fiddleback handle just like The Black Pearl, too. One unique feature of the new cue, is that it will have Mason's Micarta Ferrules (cut down to 1/2") on top of Rick's already low deflection shafts. They will be capped off with Kamui Black Medium tips, as well.

Finally, in order to get the cue to the desired weight (19 oz.), Rick is going to be using a Titanium pin in it.

I should have it in about a month!!!
