My son is left handed. BUT when he bowls, plays base ball, golf, shooting guns ETC... He does it all right handed and does it very well...

Yesterday was his real first time shooting for any length of time. He was shooting left handed. He done great making contact with the CB but was not making a lot of balls.. I am wondering if he should be shooting right handed...

Now granted he is new to the game but since he does everything else right handed (except write) should he not be shooting right handed also?

I would let him make the choice. It sounds to me he could play either way and maybe he should. My oldest(18) is left eye dominant so I taught him to shoot firearms left handed, he is naturally right handed and plays pool that way. He is a good shot whether blasting pheasants or shooting pool and can flip back and forth at either one if necessary. I started him early and I think that makes a difference.

Is he left eye dominant?

I have no Idea.. To be honest I have no Idea what I am..

I tried the whole look though your hand thing but it does not work depenging on the angle of my hands I get a different result.

So I guess I have no way to tell. (that I know of)

The dominant eye would be the better of two right. (closer to 20/20) if so that is his right eye according to the eye doctors..

Also if that is so mine are pretty darn = I have dang near 20/20 in both eyes.. (or I did the last time I went 2 years ago)

NOOOOO, let him play with his left hand if that feels comfortable for him. Mike Sigel, Ed Kelly, Marvin Henderson, Dennis Hatch, Shannon Daulton, Rodney Morris, the Mighty Miz - all lefties! And there's many more.

It will be his choice.. I will not make him shoot right handed. But I would like him to try both ways for a little while then go with the one he feels comfortable with.

I don't know about the rest but I believe Mike Sigel is a righthander that plays lefty.

Jay is right there are some very strong lefties in the world, (I can whoop most of them ) I think its a left brain right brain thing.

Dont mess with him! I'm lefty, but I can hit with both hands, play golf and hockey righty, write both hands, kick with the right foot, etc....back in school they tried to switch my writing to righty, but I stuck to my gunz! :)

theres something to playing pool lefty that works in well the brain IMO

I'm left handed...

right eye dominant

bowl left handed

play golf right handed

write left handed

throw a frisbee right handed

play pool left handed

play baseball right handed

play basketball left handed

shoot a gun right handed

I could go on but you get the picture... I'm also probably one of the most coordinated people you'll ever meet... at least my friends seem to think so.

Just let your son do what comes natural to him... that's pretty much always the best route to take.

Same as me. I play pool left handed and I write left handed. I do everything else right handed. However I can do most things with my left just like I can write right handed and play ok right handed. It comes in handy though.

Have him watch guys on you tube like Rodney Morris or Dennis Hatch, both lefties. Playing lefty can be a little awkward especially since there aren't many people to watch in person. It sounds like he might have the same problem I have. Getting your body lined up properly to your shot. Lefties tend to shoot across there bodies where righties shoot more naturally.

I would say whatever he feels comfortable with but you could have him play a set of equal offense righthanded and then lefthanded and keep track of how he does to see which way he plays better.

I know an older guy named Lefty and I always assumed he was left handed until I played pool with him once and he was playing righthanded. Turns out the only thing he does lefthanded is hit a baseball. When he was a kid he was having trouble hitting and his Dad told him to try hitting lefthanded, and whenever he came up to bat the other kids would shout "lefty" to alert the outfielders so they would shift over. The name stuck. The only thing he does lefthanded is hit a baseball and yet his name is Lefty.

similar to branprueza, and a few others, just let your son do whatever feels comfortable..

Im left handed, i write left handed and have a dominant left eye..

play tennis left handed

play table tennis left handed

play basketball left handed

shoot left handed

however,

play pool right handed

bowl right handed

play frisbee right handed

play soccer right leg

etc..

R vs L handed

There are lots of people who play different sports "opposite handed" and all that happens is as they try a sport, try left handed then right handed and you find which is most comfortable. I do not believe in the dominate eye theory so I don't believe it plays into the question. BTW I am one of those that attempts the sport each way then pick one or the other and sometimes both. Most importantly is let him pick. Good luck

Pool mostly right
Darts only left
throw R and L prefer L
Bat R and L
Bowl R and L prefer R

Let him use both, he will naturally go to the one he has the most success with. But when he is on the wrong side of the shot, he will also be able to use the other hand.

I shoot pool, bow and arrow, and rifle, left handed, pistol, writing and pitching and batting, and everything else, I do right handed.

Wow...I shoot rifles right-handed and pistols left-handed. I thought I was the only person like that.

My father always forced me into switch-hitting when I was a kid. I was a natural right-handed batter and hated the left side. Then in high school I went through a string of batting like .100 from the right side and like .500 from the left side. I had a streak of 6 games hitting a triple in each one. I totally abandoned batting righty after that. I'm a right handed golfer though. I consider switching hands every time I put one into trees.

always been a little puzzled about pool

Pool is a game that it seems we maybe should be playing opposite handed anyway. What takes more skill, forming the various closed bridges and applying the proper pressure to the cue shaft or swinging the cue? Seems to me that a very strong case could be made for a right handed person shooting lefty. It seems awkward to many of us since we have went through the awkward beginner stage long ago and swapping sides means starting all over again but I have wondered many a time if it would really have made a difference had I started playing left handed from the beginning.

Let the kid figure it out.

Eye dominance doesn't matter according to Randy G. I'm inclined to agree with him.

FWIW, I shoot right, then taught myself to shoot left, and now play pretty sporty with both hands. No idea eye dominance, and am generally right handed.

IMO, it don't matter, whichever hand you can produce a good hit from, the balls don't care.

James2003, pick an object over 10 ft. away from you and hold your arm out straight, and with both eyes open, point your index finger up so it is blocking your view of the object. While your finger is blocking the object, close your right eye and then your left eye. The eye that you use, that keeps the object blocked is your dominant eye. If they both do (rare) then you have no dominant eye.
