rest in peace, DD. some years ago i was in a bad place in life and putting on old accustats matches with that familiar voice helped me cope. him and billy were the first pool commentators for me, as i began watching in early 00's, bclub days. i always enjoyed their bickering and danny's curiousness

OK, if I might add a light note on this very sad occasion, here is Danny's favorite trivia question that had absolutely nothing to do with pool.

Can you name a word in the English language containing each of the five vowels (a e i o, u) exactly once and in their correct order?

For example, "permutation" has all five vowels exactly once each, but not appearing in order. I know of two words containing the five vowels in order with each vowel appearing only once. Do you?

RIP Danny DiLiberto. Was honored to know the man and so many memories with one of the greats. Danny was entered into the Stragiht Pool Hall Of Fame about 8 or 9 yeas ago and due to his hospital stay from a bad car/truck accident asked me to accept his award during the World Straight Pool Event at Carom Billiards. One helluva legacy. Five Hall of Fame Awards. Danny fought as a lightweight under Angelo Dundee under the name Danny Toriano, the name change was necessary cause his old man would have beat his ass if he found out he was fighting. He went 14-0-1 with 12 knockouts until he was forced into retirement after breaking his hands four times.
In 2006, he was inducted into Buffalo's Boxing Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in the sport.
Angelo Dundee said “Whoever I put in front of him he knocked out. If it weren’t for his brittle hands he would have been a champion."
Thanks for all of it mister, see you on the other side. Never Forgotten.

To stay on the lighter side, I don’t know about the English language, for the word for ‘flowerbed’ in the Italian language is AIUOLA

No doubt, Danny was a bona fide pool legend.

A quick story from the 2013 Tunica event: Danny and Al (the gentleman always sitting front row on the old Accu-Stats tapes in his white Panama with his wife Marsha) were sitting across from me at the bar and we were all enjoying some nice meals coming out of the kitchen and Danny looks at me and asks, “Are you a pool player? And I said, “Yes.” And he asks, “What’s your name?” And I replied “Lou Figueroa” and he said, “Never heard of you,” lol.

So then I started talking about being at the US Open One pocket tournaments up in Kalamazoo and the Louisville DCC at the Executive West, and listening to Danny on Accu-Stats, and suddenly Al says, “”You’re the guy with the three-piece cue!” And we talked about the Sheldon Lebow three-piece for awhile. All of which led to a great discussion on pool.

I had the chance to ask Danny about his infamous $20K match with Ronnie Allen, hear him tell some great Jack Cooney, Jimmy Reid, and Billy Incardona stories, his opinion of aiming systems (you don’t want to know) his Accu-Stats commentary, who his favorite co-commentator is/was. And so, Danny is on a roll telling stories, and I stop him at one point and tell him, “You know, I love your commentary, Danny, except for one thing.” And he said, “What’s that?” And I warned him, “You’re not going to like it.” And he insists, “Tell me!”

And so, I told him: “I don’t know how many times I’ve heard you say during a 1pocket match, when a guy plays a safety, ‘He didn’t do much there.’ Or similarly, ‘That was just a survival shot.’ And Danny, I’m sitting watching this and say to the screen, ‘There was nothing else he could do.’” And Danny responded, “I feel there’s always something you can do.” And I say, “Sure. From the booth that’s easy to say. But sometimes you just have to accept what the table affords you and I think you could phrase your commentary so it doesn’t sound so negative.” And you know what he said? He said. “OK. I’m going to change that. Thank you for saying that. And when that comes up, I’m going to say it was because of my conversation with Lou Figueroa.”

Now, I doubt he ever ended up saying that on a live mike but it was kinda cool of him to say it and take the criticism so graciously.

Rest in peace, Danny.

Lou Figueroa

RIP to a legend. And peace to those close to him.

I bet he is already in action in the great afterlife, whatever that may be.
