Rocking and Rolling at the Turning Stone

I am the storm

This is, without a doubt, one of my favorite stopping places on the tournament trail. I guess I say that about a lot of events, but there is something quite special about the Turning Stone Casino. I like the fact that everything is all under one roof, like a little city, stores, restaurants, spa, golf course, a business center which I am using right now to post, and many other amenities.

Interestingly, the Turning Stone Casino started out as a bingo hall and cigarette concession stand many moons ago and grew into a first-class facility. It's the only thing out here in Verona, NY. The landscaping is breathtaking, beautiful gardens and scenery. I was speaking to a lady who works here, and she told me that the hotel stayed 99-percent booked every single day of the year, which is very telling about how popular this place is. There are shows galore with stars, actors, comedians, and singers. The PGA had a tournament here recently, and it was a complete success. There are two more Joss events scheduled here in the near future which are currently in the making. Turning Stone Casino likes pool players and welcomes them by providing topnotch accommodations as well as an EXCELLENT venue where the players can perform and give it their all.

Yesterday, I was watching as Jennifer Baretta defeated Milkshake Mikey in the first round. She's a very serious player when she's in the pit, with good focus and follow-through. After the match, she told me that she was pleased with how she played, but she had to overcome a couple of obstacles, one being her baby boy kicking inside her belly. She seems to be a very happy lady, always brandishing a smile on her face.

Shawn "Get Some" Wilkie will go up against Jeannette Lee today. George Breedlove and Jeannette always have their young daughter with them, and you can see she is a happy child. After Jeannette's first match, she was swarmed with a crowd of autograph-seekers and picture-takers, and she didn't hestiate to sit down and sign autograph after autograph. Her daughter was by her side and told her mom that her back had an itch. Jeannette immediately stopped signing autographs and scratched her back and then set her on her lap, playing with her, laughing, as everyone looked on. Jeanette Lee is a great mother as well as a player.

Marlon Manalo is the man to beat at this event. He's playing effortlessly and flawlessly. Ralf Souquet also seems to be in a zone, not missing too many balls. Of course, whoever comes out on top this Sunday, they will have earned it. They posted up the payouts. The only figure I can remember is the $8,000 for first place and $5,300 for second. That's what I want my horse to shoot for, the $8,000 figure. :p

Just thought I'd check in and give a brief snippet of the happenings. See y'all later! :)

She is a very sweet,sweet,sweet & Nice ,nice,nice person.

It's 4 to 2, Dave Hernandez versus Keith McCready, with Dave on top, and I'm sweating it big time. Dave has momentum on his side and is getting loose as a goose, making two 1-9 combos for two great wins.

At the beginning of the match, Dave played well, leaving Keith benched. Keith had one opportunity at the table, made a great shot, but scratched, giving Fernandez ball in hand.

At one point during the match, Dave fired in a tough shot on the rail and left himself a little bad. He talks out loud and says, "I'm sure making it tough on myself." Keith, never missing a beat, responds, "Hey, you're making it tough on both of us," meaning Keith's sitting in the chair for the majority of the early part of the match. Everybody laughs and the match continues.

Well, I'm not sure who's going to win this race to 9, as Dave is free-wheeling and looking very comfortable at the table, but I'm still hanging in there.:o

Well, things got worse when Dave Fernandez made a 9 on the break, maintaining his lead, 6 to 3. Keith never gave up, though, and finally ran a couple racks when he got an opportunity at the table.

This match is very difficult for me to watch as I'm nervous. Keith made a 1-9 combo himself, and before I knew it, Keith got to the hill, with Dave still at 6.

I couldn't stand it anymore and left to post an update on the match. I hope when I return, it's all over, but one never knows when it comes to pool. Currently, it's Keith 8, with Dave at 6, racing to 9.

Did anyone notice?

that Tony Ruberto won his first match, but his opponent was moved to the right? Congrats to the women playing in the event, it speaks highly of them.

And also, looks like Santos got a pretty good road to continue on.

Not so fast.....

Maybe you haven't heard of him........but Jerry Slivak is MORE than capable of beating Santos.....

I saw Slivka playing last year at the DCC and he was quite impressive. He was very focused at the table and came with some big shots. I'd like to get to see him shoot again sometime.

SO what's the result? Who won?

Thanks!

Yeah the kid can really play.....he grew up here in Pittsburgh and is probably the only one who could give Gary Nolan (aka 'the bushwhacker') a run for his money back in the early 90's when Gary was playing......I remember Slivka telling me about the days when he was REAL young and Ernie the Jeweler would take him on the road and stake him.......I remember being awe-struck when he told me that CJ Wiley spotted him the 6 and out......and Jerry said he needed EVERY BIT OF THE SPOT......but that was probably 10 years ago if not more.......I'm kind of hoping Jerry can get qualified to play in an IPT event......he really is a good kid:D

Awww, don't say that! I've got him in Joe T's pick one . . . :(

Speaking of Jerry Slivka, he's up on Santos at the time of this writing, 4-zip. He's hitting 'em SWEET!

The whole crowd is surrounding Shawn Wilkie vs. Jeanette Lee, with Lee currently at 3, Shawn 1. I think Shawn is the favorite in this match, but with all the pool media, cameras, crowds, fans, Shawn does have a tough road to hoe up ahead. Not saying Jeanette can't play, but having the crowd on your side is a bonus when in the heat of the battle.

Hatch is stuck also at the time of this writing, with zero games, his opponent "Vri" (sp) scoring three very big ones.

The pockets are a little bit bigger than the Diamonds that were used at the IPT in Vegas, measuring in at 4 9/16ths as opposed to 4-1/4.

Keith defeated Hernandez , 9 to 6. The case game for Keith was a gift, when Dave tried to fire in a straight-in 9-ball a little too hard, left it rattling in the pocket. Keith accepted Hernandez's kind gift for the almighty win. Whew!

Gypsy, Frankie White, and Keith took a shot at the craps table earlier in the day. The committee of three didn't make any profit, but they sure did make a lot of noise, with all pit bosses watching them intently. :o

Keith plays again at 8:00 p.m. So we're weathering the storm, sweating a few matches along the way! :p

You can cut the air with a knife. Jeanette is plowing through Maryland Young Gun Shawn Wilkie, twisting the knife when she made a 9-ball on the break. She is on the hill, going to 9, with Shawn holding on for dear life with 4 games.

Jeanette has her hair pulled back in a cute bun, and she's very tall and lean, looking mighty dominating at this juncture, dressed to kill in all black. Her top is a silk laced black vest, and she looks elegant and very beautiful next to the blue Simonis cloth.

Jerry Slivka vs. Santos, 3 to 4. Hatch on the rebound, tied at 4 to 4 with Vzi.

Tony Ruberto is up 7 to 5 on Michas.

Lots of EXCELLENT matches going on.

Jeanette Lee triumphs over Shawn "Get Some" Wilkie from Maryland. When she sunk the winning ball in, the whole crowd became unglued. Jeanette was very reserved for a couple of seconds and then smiled broadly, enjoying the sweet taste of victory.

Dennis Hatch loses to Zvi (sp). I'm still not sure of how to spell this player's name, but I got a chance to meet him out in the smoking lounge, which is OUTSIDE. What a beautiful day it is here in New York too. Birds chriping, sun's out, blue skies, it doesn't get any better than this for the smokers (LOL).

Zvi is a relatively unknown player in the States. He's from Tel Aviv, Israel, and he's only been playing 9-ball for 8 months, coming from a snooker background. Keith asked him if he was the best player in Israel, and he said he's right up there at the top.

Jerry Slivka just lost a heart-breaker to Santos, 9 to 7. Santos slopped 4 balls in on his case game. I think you could have fried an egg on Jerry's head at that point, but when the 9-ball dropped, it was all over but the crying.

Keith walks up to Jeanette Lee and asked about her daughter, what her name was. Jeanette says, "It's Cheyenne." She then asked her 2-year-old how to spell her name. Keith goes, "S-h-a," and soon the tikester interjected, spelling her name like a champ, C-h-e-y-e-n-n-e." I winked at Jeannette and said that Cheyenne spells better than Keith.

Allen Hopkins is getting ready to play Jennifer Baretta for the 6:00 p.m. rounds. We're going back to the room and get Keith's stick, so that he can gear up for his 8 o'clock round.

c'mon Shirt!
TSK! TSK! That's no longer Shaun's nickname. ;) LOL, you haven't been playing too many events but pay attention at the ones you do go to... you'll see he's not wearing the shirts anymore... Now he's just wearing t-shirts. I haven't talked to him about it but Ceci told me in Sterling that he didn't like the nickname and prefers "get some" which is tattooed down the backside of his forearm... the arm he use's to stroke with. :p

Jennie, thanks for the updates. Have they mentioned any dates for the future tournaments?? I might as well try to plan now...
