I'm heading to Rome in a few weeks. Do they play one pocket there? Any places to play? Any of our Italian members want to play?

Steven

When I was in Rome in 2010 all the rooms were in the suburbs. There's an Irish Pub in Rome that has a bar box in their upstairs section. It's called Druid's Rock

ddress:

Piazza dell’Esquilino, 1
00184 Rome
Metro: Repubblica, Termini
Phone: 06 474 1326
Links: http://www.druidspubrome.com/
Hours: Daily noon–2am

There's also Caffè Biliardo
Viale Angelico, 287 - Roma, zona Prati - Vaticano

I hope that helps get you started.

There is a place there called Vatican Billiards.
I hear the players are strong and have a pretty serious stake horse.
Be careful.

There is a place in the city of Rome that I saw when I was there. You can't miss the sign and it is around the Coliseum if I remember correctly. Not sure what it's like in there as I was too busy seeing the sights. If you get on a tour bus you are guaranteed to see the neon billiards sign.

Hi Steven, finding a decent game of one pocket may be tough - I've never seen it played here. 'Billiards' in Rome is going through a difficult period, many rooms have closed or moved over to card games and video poker as their way to make ends meet.

I've never played one pocket but would be happy to learn and should you be interested I can introduce you to the 'delights' of the Italian table, a real nightmare for anyone from a pool background. It is a 10ft table with 2.75 corner and 3 inch side pockets, if you so much as brush the cushion or points (the Italian translation of 'points' is 'bones' to give you an idea of how generous they are) the ball will not drop. At this point you may be thinking to yourself - ok its a super tight table (not as tight as Russian pyramid) I can handle that - however there is one more little detail that is the real problem, the cushions are at least 60 mm high and a pool ball is only 57 mm. This means you are nearly always hitting down on the cueball and if the white is touching the cushion (and I'd swear those cushions have magnets to attract the white) it is literally under the cushion and you have to jack up to 40 degrees to avoid miscueing.

Let me know if you're still coming and want a game of pool or 8-15 which is the Italian game played on these tables using pool balls.

I've been to Italy about 15 times in the last couple of years. I've seen one pool table. But then again, I haven't exactly been looking.

Freddie <~~~ wouldn't know what to do if I were looking for one

I have been there and never saw any billiards. Probably too busy eating.

I loved ROme, jealous I am!

Hey Mike, I would like to learn 8-15. I'm taking my dad to Rome. He's in his mid 70's and I wanted him to enjoy Rome before his health kept him from it. Anyway, he will have to rest a little during the day/evening. I could play while he is resting. I will send you a pm with my hotel and the days we will be in Rome. It will probably be best to contact me at the hotel. My name is Steven Burrus. I'll be checked in under my name.

Steven

Steven I hope you and your dad enjoyed your trip to Rome and that his wrist is better now. I was impressed at how quickly you adapted to the Italian table, only sorry we didn't have more time to play. It's always nice to meet up with fellow AZBers
