Ronnie Allen is most known for his one pocket, but was very good at nine ball, snooker and golf on a snooker table. He also was a very good golfer.

I am sure he won some. 9 ball tournaments along the way, but playing for the cash was his best game.

I met him in the late 50's

Ronnie ALLEN

Ronnie didn't like 9-ball....but I know of a 7- pack he ran for serious cash.

If someone played Ronnie an all-round of Ronnie's seven best games when he played
his best, I can't think of anyone who could have beaten him.

Little known fact....Ronnie may have been the best one-handed 3-cushion player that ever lived.

I remember in 1981 or 82 Ronnie took 2nd place behind Mike Sigel at the old Caesars Tahoe event that Richie Florence put on. All the name players from that era were there. His high finish was worth a cool $17,500 but the casino ended up getting a major chunk of that.

Hey RICHIE! Hows it going brother? Just wondering have ya been down 999's recently. I haven't been down there in about a year or so but everyone I talk to has been saying its been rocking and is the new spot now.

There is a dvd called "The $20,000 World One Pocket Challenge Match", takes place circa 89?? ( give or take). It is sold by Jay Hefert on his website. Jay produced the event. Ronnie Allen vs Danny DeLiberto, $20,000 total.

Although both post peak, it is a very good match and shows great shots, moves, and strategy as the book title goes. In particular, Ronnie was so offensive...always has balls moving towards his pocket. Danny, " working the pile". I have probably watched it a half dozen times or moe, but last week laid up from surgery I got a chuckle watching it again. I read the debate here in the one pocket teacher thread and comments on Danny. In the first game it is 7-6 Danny, but Ronnie has the last two up table towards his side bunched towards the corner. Danny goes 4 rails and closes out the game reaching for thr rack when the ball comes off the third rail.

While not 9 ball as Richie asked, I do not think there are many good videos showing Ronnie's speed. You can ony imagine when he was young. The thread is about Ronnie, but Danny is most impressive

enjoy,

ronnie allen

at one time he busted a pay ball game at the billiard pallace when it was upstairs at bellflower ca., game started out cheap and after a almost continous 3 day session, players getting in and out at different times, and the money getting bigger started out as a 1 and 2 dollar game, ended out at 100 times that..

pay ball is a ring game played on a 5 by 10 snooker table, using one red ball, the 2-3-4-5-6 its played like 9 ball, most of the time its played like 1 dollar on the red -2 3 4 5 and 2 dollars on the 6, you get payed for each ball you make and payed by each player.

the game i am talking about was for $100 a ball and $200 on the last, break and run payed double. there were 7 players in the game, ronnie broke and ran 3 racks, he had all the money in the game and game was over.

i only saw him play a few times, but will never for get him. i have a first edition hardback of the hustler written by walter tevis i ask ronnie to sign it and he wrote, " good luck - fast eddie "

I saw him play some matches. He played good 9 ball but the top money players out here at the time like Cole, Keith, Jimmy Marino and Richie Florence would have beat him. He had a very controlled, professional game, but seemed to be lacking the high gear in 9 ball.

Fast Eddie was a bit before my stake hoss days and the wrong end of the country. I heard some serious reviews of his cash game. Wish I knew the truth. Good time for JAM to pick Earthquake's brain.

When the Hell is Keith going to write a book?

The story that Ronnie says about some millionaire golf player that he was hustling is awesome.

Another great story he told about Buddy Hall, how he busted him playing 1 pocket!

Accu-Stats has a DVD of Ronnie Allen playing Steve Mizerak in a nine-ball tournament. Allen is a lot more in tune with nine-ball than you would expect from such an accomplished one-pocket specialist.

I only really saw him play one pocket but he could play anything at a high level. It would be hard to overstate how good he was.
He often did stupid things though gambling though and lost.

Ronnie was one of the two best One Pocket players I ever saw (along with Efren) and I'm not convinced Efren could have beaten Ronnie in his prime. He damn sure could play 9-Ball too, and it took a top player to beat him, and they might not like it if the bet got too high. Ronnie was a great money player, the bigger the bet the more he liked it. He was triple sharp when it came to matching up on a pool table and trapped a lot of good players playing One Pocket, one handed to their two. If you gave him the break, you were dead!

Ronnie was a great clutch player, saving his best shooting for the most critical situations, when all the money was on the line. If I had to bet on one guy to make a really hard shot for the money, it would either be Ronnie, Cornbread Red or Keith in that order. He was nearly unbeatable at Golf on a snooker table and his Pay Ball game was top notch as well. His downfall was the casinos (mostly Dice) and the horses. He must have blown millions (literally) in his life betting the ponies. For such a smart guy, it amazed me how addicted he was to the track.

P.S. In the World One Pocket Challenge in 1987, it was the last time I saw Ronnie play top level One Pocket. He had to, to beat Danny in his home room. Ronnie spent weeks preparing for that match, working out with Jack Cooney for fifty a game.
