Ronnie O vs Trump on Now!

Eric, tons are still only league level play, heck I have had quite a few tons and only played league level snooker, no where near good enough to be pro. When I played in the same room as James Wattana he was often making a maximum a week sometimes more on a tight tourny table and so many tons no one kept track. By the time I moved on he had racked up 60 maximums on that table.
At the pro level these days you don't get many chances and you usually have to get in early with a 10-12ft opener, miss you lose.

I really think the problem here is perception as I often see this come up on AZ. They watch the best in the worlds and it don't look that tough and most on here never been near a 12ft or a pro.
I'v played them and I did not have to like it :)

Here are just a few results from some local leagues, they all have ton up runners.

I know how hard snooker is, I played American snooker on 100 year old Brunswick tables with 2 1/8" balls back in the 80's my best break was 53 or 56(cant remember), Now days I'm a much stronger pool player. I gambled what was heavy for me back then $400/frame 6 reds was the most, usually $50/game to $100/game sometimes 3 reds, rarely 15 reds. I played for 3 years on the 12' and 5 years on a 10' American tables. like this. I know thats a piss poor break for playig that long but, i had ZERO instruction and it was dodgy equipment, i never saw a century break ever by anyone, i wasnt the best player by a long shot, but again we didnt play 15 reds often.

So 3-4 years ago I put a Steel block Riley table in my house with the cloth like we are watching now, not club cloth. And wow was I horrible, I could feel my age 43-44 at the time. My pool game was more important to me and where in the 80's i could switch between the 2, now I couldn't.

The biggest difference for me was the 2 1/16" balls, holly hell 1/16" is HUGE when it comes to balls. Then toss in a ash cue and forget it, I couldnt pot a ball. So I go get my pool cue and was firing in the little tiny balls like it was almost nothing-except one big problem with a pool cue I couldn't get any spin on the white ball, i was playing plane ball for everything and that dont work for break building, i'd fire in all the open balls and couldnt get any side to open the stack, if I got a natural angle i was ok, but that's no fun, with 2 1/8" balls a pool cue works.

So Johny Morra comes over lines up 15 reds black, pink, blue on their spots and runs out, fluked one red in, i spotted mostly pinks and blacks, he used my snooker cue could screw the ball back a mile, I couldn't wit hthat cue. I went and got pool balls and my cue and could screw what i was used to. man its a different world.

I wish to hell I had someone when I was 9 or 10 take me to a snooker academy and teach me, i dont have the talent to ever be a top player but I know i'd be one heck of a better player today. My dad or myself just didnt know, i'm from central California where they grow almonds and tomatoes.

My lifetime high break was 142 then the local rooms switched to a 14 red ball rack (probably lost a couple of red balls so reduced the number used). I've ran in the 130s several times. But now I'm a half-blind old man. Bob, I guess you didn't want a couple of misfit hillbillies showing up in Texas? That's okay, I have a colonoscopy that week.

I believe this match is a race to 17 (best of 33). The final is always race to 18 (best of 35)

that "Best Of" language really pisses me off, i remember the world series, best of 7, when i was a kid, I had to calculate how many games they needed to win. WHY NOT JUST SAY HOW MANY POINTS/GAMES WINS IT!!!!!!

So then I turn 18 go to the pool hall, first night on the front box they are playing races to 11. I asked the guy "how does either player win?" he said "Who ever gets to 11 games first". I said "no 'best of BS'" he replied, "no why bother with that?". Right then I was hooked on pool, I said these guys have it figured out and I want to hang with this crew, I never looked back.

So then years later after a million races in pool, i come to Europe, we get youtube and snooker has the best of 27, man I cant fade all that math. Why dont they say first one to 18, race to 18? its so much easier. make it for us dumb people, Who cares how many total games there are? in frame 5356 Judd made a cracking pott to beat Ronnie, but in frame 53463 Ronnie made a smashing comeback......OMG I cant stand it. just say "race to 17" simple as that.

I tried to explane this to my friend wayno in the world series, i said its a race to 4, he couldnt figure that out.

so I'm I shot? or am I right? I want to know how long the race is, thats it, not total frames and best of, too much math.

god I need a sleeping pill....

Before my pill, I'm watching darts here in on Eurosport every Thursday night its week 13 of 15 or something, i like sweating the darts. then I see best of 12 legs? Please help me with this, its a even number how can there be a best of 12, what if it goes 6-6??? then what happens to 12? does it go to 13 or do they split the 12, which is ok but then its not really a best of 12, its half of 12. I'm serous about this, i'm in Germany and dont have english speaking commentators, I ant figure that out at all, best of 12, i'm taking 2 pills, can someone please answer these questions, please?

thanks

I figure all things being equal, if i played good back in the 80's as I do now I could have got a 80-85ish break. the tables were slow, rails dead and there was no going around the table(for any reason) balls didnt roll that long. Best you could do was get real good on the blue and open the reds. It was possible if the angle was good to shoot a baulk colour and maybe get back in line if you fell on the wrong side of the blue. It was very limiting because of the equipment, on the 10' box I cant recall my hi break, I never thought about it, i was just worried about getting the $$$, so I played lots of snooker kinda like one pocket, make a few points and leave them tough, that way they would have lots of shots(which they would miss 90% of the time) but fely like they had a chance so I could keep them on the line longer. It wasnt about snooker-it was about $$. I was good at winning $$ at snooker and it was fun.

Just add 1 and divide by 2. Best of 17 = 18/2 which means a race to 9.

They don't do best of 10 or even numbers because then it would not work. The race and the best of number always had to be an odd number indicating the maximum number of possible games.

But I agree with you, would be be much easier to simply say race to nine. Everyone understands a race, you start at zero and finish at nine.

How do I get this? Every time I click on the link nothing comes up. I have a Macbook so do that matter? Thanks in advance

Check that link tomorrow about 630 am pst and look for snooker, it will have a 10 ball icon. Click he link. You may have to try more then one link to get a good feed.

That link also have all the live Euro sports if you are interested.

I think you're wrong. I'd put a lot of money on it. Of course if you mean every time they start with a couple of loose reds and an otherwise full pack, then I'd agree, but even Trump can't do that.

According to a reliable report, during a one week interval Don "The Preacher" Feeney (who appears in The Color of Money) had a run of 100 at straight pool, a run of 10 at 3 cushion and a break of 100 at snooker.

Don used to teach a friend of mine from the Chicago area. At Chris' Billiards he ran 152 straight pool, ran 18 at 3 Cushion and a perfect rack on the Snooker table. He used to say back in the 1980s, there was no money in pool that is why he went overseas to play Snooker.

I remember giving Johns dad a ride home from the qualifiers one time when he was playing snooker in the UK, quietest fellow I ever met :)

Makes me wonder why pool players don't play snooker. I'd bet if Shane (or anyone top tier player) put in 5 years of solid work on nothing but a snooker table, he'd be a champion and making much more money.

I would say he has no prayer.

I think Alex has more natural talent that lends itself to snooker and even he would not be able to play at the level of the top professionals in snooker at this stage in his life.

Top snooker players are raised into the game alot like Tiger was raised into golf, they start VERY young when they show natural ability and they are coached into century running snooker players by the time they are in their teens.

There have been a few pro pool players that tried to become professional snooker players, they all failed, and some of those pro pool players are in the hall of fame.

I heard that Alex has had some coaching from an obscure Toronto player called "The Grinder", aka Cliff Thorburn - World Champion 1980, 3 time winner of The Masters.

As for calculating the number of frames to win, snooker assumes that players can do basic arithmetic - like adding points, determining how many points are still available on the table, calculating how many frames are required to win the match, how many snookers are required to recover to win ....
