This needs clarification, you can use your stick to line up a shot, however, you CAN NOT lay your stick down on the table and take your hand off of it.tigerseye said:

The rule is specific for a player in the act of aiming. If a referee calls this foul on you and you weren't aiming, you should protest to the head referee. If you're tying your shoe or getting the bridge, it's perfectly acceptable to lay your cue on the table while doing so.

To stop myself missing easy shots I started walking behind shots and putting chalk on the rail after chalking. It is on or near the line, but doesn't serve a purpose of cheating when aiming. It's not a foul in any rule book I have READ. But it can cause a foul if the cue ball jumps the rail and hits the chalk and goes back on the table. Again you must specify whose rules you are using when asking a question. I'm constantly amazed by watching guys playing for money not only don't specify whose rules they are playing by, they don't seem to know the rules of any book. Still the money flows.

There are all kinds of rules to play by and it is a shame that we cannot come to a final conclusion on what the rules should be...

One other little problem with this. The powers that be are constantly twicking (spell check) the rules and fiddling with them, making changes that sometimes defy logic. It all becomes a little bit of a willy nilly attempt to control the play of a game that needs less rules and not more. A few better written rules would govern many situations that are now covered by multiple current rules.
Just like this deal about setting your cue on the table. Who knows what the rule is this year? Probably only the guys who wrote (or rewrote) it most recently.

I agree JAY , as there to many rules to play by, and to many rewrites, need one govering body. but as a old traveling TD as yoursef i allways had with me a printed copy of TEXAS EXPRESS RULES that i announced that they we the one used in my tournements. and you better know them and i will say again it up to the player to call fouls and if he dont no the rules HE BAD.jay helfert said:

The BCAPL Rules are
Anything on a rail (Chalk, pocket marker, tip scuffer, etc.) that isn't a part of the rail is considered a foreign object. If a ball goes onto a rail and contacts any foreign object...it's a foul.
That's why if there is any chalk on the rail, I remove it or move it to the head rail if I am breaking

I have seen just about everything in pool except ball hitting chalk on the rail. Never seen a ball leave a table hit something and come back to playing surface (I have seen a guy jump ball off table and pocket a ball on another table). I have learned the rules by situations in games and then finding it in the rule book. I did read a BCA rule book about 2 years ago, probably time to read it again.

If the shooter uses his cue stick in order to align a shot by placing it on the table without having a hand on the stick, it is a foul.
But I'm not BCA ref.
I successfully completed a jump shot during a tournament several years back... but it was certainly weird. Here's what happened. The CB jumped over the impeding ball... then struck the OB I was aiming at on the fly. The OB was fairly close to a side rail... so when the CB stuck it on the fly, the OB bounced off of the table bed and onto the top of the side rail, which was slightly crowned... and then it slowly rolled its way down the rail towards the corner pocket (where I was aiming to make it)... and the OB rolled all the way into the pocket, never returning back onto the table bed.
