Rules to rotation phillipino style?

I agree, that's why the Pinoy's are who they are. The problem is, what are the rules? It's as bastardized as 8 ball? Serious 61 with world standardized rules....I'd pay to watch that...one game might take awhile though:confused:

I'm sure there are variations, but since Rotation came from the U.S., then an older rulebook would be the ruleset.

When I was taught Rotation from my father, it was really no different than any other way anyone played rotation. ... and of course that won't mean anything to people who never played the game.

Anyway...
  • No ball in hand
  • We never got into a 3-foul situation ... maybe he didn't know about it or it never happened
  • We spot balls or left them (shooter's choice) on bad hits. If we spot the ball, we shot from balk. This looks to be slightly different than the rules on the internet as there doesn't seem to be the choice. I have a feeling this rule was the way it was when the U.S. introduced it to the PI.
  • 61 wins

Freddie <~~~ wasn't thrilled with the game, so I'm not going to be all fantasizing about it today

This reminds me...about 3-4 months ago....Some Kano that lives in the PI was entertaining a couple young guys...friends, cousins...

Anyway they started playing 8-ball...the visitors asked what are the rules...and he says majestically...we play pool a little different in PI, no behind the line. They ask what are the rules...he says...I'll tell ya as the game goes along:eek:

I still laugh about it....and the kids swallowed it hook line and sinker?

correct. if you attempt to do a safety shot and the safety shot is successful, your opponent would declare "spot". the object ball would then be spotted then you shoot it with the CB anywhere behind the line.

Let me get this straight: A successful, called safety allows the opponent to "declare spot" and get a spot shot with the cueball in hand behind the line. I think you're confusing the successful, called safety with a lucky miss where you leave your opponent safe. I'm not sure though. Any thoughts?

We never played that way on the banger tables or the advanced/pro tables. If he couldn't hit it you got cb behind headstring. Johnnyt

when your opponent declares a spot because he cant see the object ball, it means he misses a shot and its your turn to shoot the spotted object ball.

sorry for the confusion.
if i make a safety shot, opponent has the option to shoot it or call "spot".
> if he decides to shoot it and misses (foul shot), I have the option to shoot it as is, or spot the object ball and shoot it with CB in the kitchen
> if he doesnt want to shoot it, he calls "spot" - object ball is spotted and i shoot it with CB in the kitchen.

nobody mentioned about how the balls should be racked. there are variations on how but the most basic is that the one (1) should be in front, two and three (2) & (3) at the back corners and the fifteen (15) in the middle.

This is how my friends and I rack the balls

In traditional Pinoy rotation the higher numbered balls are placed closer to the center.

1
11 12
13 15 14
7 10 9 8
2 5 6 4 3

Balls in the same row opposite each other can be interchanged i.e.

1
12 11
13 15 14
8 10 9 7
3 5 6 4 2

All your skills come into play in 15 ball rotation. Combo's, banks, caroms, safes, kicking (no jump cues), 3 cushion. I wish Efern and Busta would put on a show somewhere in the states...like TAR. Then if you've never seen it played by top players you'd be in for a suprise. When you run a rack of 15 ball rotation you've done something. Too many are worried about whats good for TV. I say build the streams up first and it will sell to tv fast. Johnnyt

Efren and Busty did put on a show in the states. It was at the DCC. Dannny D. did the commentary. I have the DVD. It was fun to watch the exhibition. Although I did wish that the commentators knew the rules before the match. They were kind of trying to figure it out as they played. But again the play by those two was brilliant.

That's how we racked the balls... great diagram

I was told that if you get the CB into the kitchen after making your last ball, you continue to break the next rack. If you don't, the other player breaks. If it's not the Filipino style, that might be the way they played in Japan.

Are how it was taught to me when I was in the Philippines last August. The rest of the basic rules (first to 61 etc) I think we all have pretty much gotten down now.

It's a GREAT game.

Holy crap that brings back memories!

I distinctly remember that when I was younger. That was how we played in our room.
But as I get older, that rule sorta disappeared from the places and people I played with. I think maybe because we starting seeing professional pool on tv and they always showed winner's break and the likes.

This is how we usually rack Rotation:

1
13 14
12 15 11
7 10 9 8
3 4 6 5 2

Some balls are interchangeable like 13 & 14, 12 & 11, 7 & 8, 10 & 9, 4 & 5 and 3 & 2. First to 61 points, wins. A foul and or a scratch loses you a turn. The incoming shooter has the option to shoot where it lays, or the option to have the OB (or the lowest numbered ball) spotted and shoot it from behind the kitchen. There's no "spot" option for the incoming shooter if the previous shooter scratched while making a legal hit, although he has the option of placing the CB anywhere behind the kitchen. If the OB WAS behind the kitchen after a scratch, the OB will be re-spotted. If the incoming shooter is snookered, he has the option to shoot, or call "spot", meaning, he will lose his turn. All balls that were made are re-spotted if the shooter fouled or scratched while making a ball/balls.

Here's a money game between Dennis Orcullo and Lolong, one of Jay's favorite character when he's in the Philippines. I believe Lolong only has to make 29 points while Dennis has to clear 91 to win:
