Sarah Rousey comments on the Women's Worlds

You think whoever walks out with the $20,000 is gonna say "wow, that tourney sure sucked"

When you get your noble tourney together to put cash in the girls pockets let them know. I'm sure they'll all run to play in it.

Do you even bother to read before you respond?

Of course not, the winner will be happy as hell. The person a little further down the line who spent $4000 to get there only to be degraded and treated to poor equipment and climate might not feel so happy about it with their $2000 for an 8th place finish considering all that they had to go through.

So she give you the 8?

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

Yep..;) I'll take the "8", and aint gotta like it!!!

Thats how good I play.

I could tell you ONE thing 4-sure Mia, I aint even gonna attemp 2-play on any kind of TV table @ my speed. Even if I were invited, 4 some silly reason.

No, but there's no entry fee and nobody forced anyone to go.

and so far we've only had 1 complaint.

That you know of.

In retail we say that it's not the unhappy customers that you know about that are the problem - it's all the ones that don't say anything to you and just don't come back.

You can figure that if something is a problem for one customer then it's probably an issue for many more that choose to remain silent.

I won't let you reduce all the issues Sarah brought up to "just one complaint". For her to be so upset about it that she decided to speak up in this manner is a serious deal for those who know that Sarah is generally pretty mild mannered and a real happy-to-be alive - love life kind of person.

Sometimes you need to look at who is doing the complaining and ask yourself what happened to make them so mad. Maybe there is something to it.

This is a really tough one.

It really sucks what you have to tolerate to be a professional pool player , man or woman. People are going to hate this I know but the simple fact is no one (in the grand scheme of things outside of other pool players) really wants to watch pool , therefore sponsors get little too nothing for thier money , therefore there is no money put into the game and no money to get into the pockets of the players that deserve it. Anyone one willing to put any money into a Tourny is going to have to cover every possible base to make it worth while to do so. Another unfortunate byproduct of the above is 'generally' what some of these people consider to be 'worth while'. Your going to have to try and capitalize on anything that will get people to watch whether it be good play , pretty women or whatever. Sometimes it's almost like a circus which is an absolute shame.

Now this is where I get flamed into oblivion . . .

This has been a fact of the game of pool forever. I know this is death to say but , why anyone would make pool thier primary source of income is beyond me and they really should have known better. I've been playing pool since I could reach the height of a table , before that really , and it has always been the same. The lives pool players have to lead to survive is nothing I would wish on anyone. I agree with ALL the complaints , seriously without question but these people made the career choice and have to consider this part of thier choice. I could have been a full time artist . . . and most likely been starving my whole life. I could have been actor and lived in the same car , there are alot of things I would have loved to do 'for a living' that I knew no one or at the very least an infinitesimally percentage of the participants do. So now , I hate my job and do all the other things for my own personal enjoyment and I'm sure have less to be sorry about. I made the choice to have a better living and the knowledge knowing I can provide a better life for my family. I know they are happier about it too. That is one more thing to love.

I see high level pool in a similar light to olympic sports. You train your entire life (gymnast , skater , etc) to try and be the best in the world knowing full well that there really is no 'career' there. You do it because you truly love the sport and have an undeniable burning deep inside to compete at it and show the world you are the best. These are all good and wondeful things but is that alone enough ? Only 'you' can make that decision and then 'you' must live with it.

I say all this with the absolute deepest respect and admiration for these people. Thier talent and devotion in the sport is awes inspiring. You all have my sincerest wishes for success and happiness and I pray that you get all you deserve and worked so hard for.

Jay.

Jay, it's not all doom and gloom. There are some pool players who do make a decent enough living and enjoy the fact that their life is pretty much their own without being tied to a 9-5 job.

The thing is that no skater or gymnast who is mediocre at best is going to be invited to compete in a World Championships. Their are no promoter whims, no invites, the CEO of Nabisco's daughter doesn't get to play with the big girls just because she can do some cartwheels and a back flip.

That's the biggest slap in the face. Charlie Williams is a professional player who started an organization with the noble intent of standing up for the rights and respect due to professional players. He should know better than to disrespect his fellow professional players like this.

If he didn't have enough truly world class players to fill the tournament then adjust the groups and spend the extra money on better payouts or a better experience for the players. Since there is no entry fee then what does it matter if it's a 32 player field?

Then you can have longer races between quality players. Win-win-win all the way around.

Spend the extra money on extra tables, a green room where players can relax, an on-site massage therapist. These things are cheap in the Philippines. Do whatever it takes to have only the best of the best and treat them like gold. Because really that is what they are. Top players who are willing to travel halfway around the world and star in your show who can only earn decent money if they finish really high? The least you can do is show them a lot of respect and decency.

As you said, it's tough to be a pool player. Even tougher when one of your own treats you crap.

I've never seen her play but there is no way she is a b player the way she is being described to play. at least not a b player as I remember it. She sounds like an average c.

You may be right. I was trying to be nice and err on the side of caution

That's exactly my point tho , they do these things at every last attempt to gain attention , publicity and attendance to improve the return on investment.

This is not at all uncommon in other 'income' based sports. There's a big golf thread going on so to use golf as an example , the PGA and the LPGA have a looong history of giving exemptions to un-qualified competitors soley for the purpose of increasing media attention and attendance. Whether it be young attractive players , players currently in the hype machine or Women in mens' events.

The only difference is the caliber of the people putting on the event as to what extreme they might go.

Heck , you can win a TV show where you never play around of golf and get exemption into a PGA event.

How about that in pool , "Hey , cut this 9 ball in and get a free pass to the world championships"

:)

Seriously. :(

Don't forget that Jay is actually getting paid by CW/Dragon for doing a job for them, as tournament director.

No surprise if he sees things a little different than Sarah.

Roy - likes both Sarah and Jay, and thinks the truth is somewhere in the middle ;)

Wow Roy - I was thinking the same thing but didn't want to ruffle any feathers. Welcome to the Dark Side.

And - this gal is a C player at best playing in a World Championship. So please explain how anyone can think that this is good for pool?

Watchez,

Just to clarify, Sarah Rousey is far better than a C player. Were you referring to Shanelle?

if you watched, theres a C player that almost got a win from yu ram cha. you think the women players are that good? theres only a few and if you want a "WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP" then it would be very very hard to put in 16 players

and btw, the crowd is behind the C player (a 1st timer). so you think that isnt good for pool?

it's a race to 5. who do you think a race to 5 benefits? the skilled or the unskilled player? don't you think there's a reason why it's a race to 5? or that the empress cup, another event shanelle played in, was a race to 3?

i saw shanelle play in the am open at vf a couple of years ago...if she's a C player now then she's made a huge jump in her game.
