I see that in the Great Southern Billiards Tournament, Earl lost to Monica Webb, 9-5, and also his next match to finish out of the money.....Excuse me, but I didn't know Ms. Webb was capable of beating Earl.....Does this indicate that Earl's glory days are finally behind him? Sure seems like it......

I think it is a pretty clear indication that his mind was not on the tournament. I know there was an issue that happened the day before that may have had him preoccupied. It was nothing very serious but it very well could have affected his focus. I think it had to do with some water damage at home. This was second hand info.

I hope Monica didn't jump on top of the pool table and started dancing considering Earl had some tragedy before the match.

I bet it would have been the chicken dance if she did.:D

Anyone shocked by this result simply has no idea how well Monica plays. Yes, it's an upset, but hardly a shocker.

Monica is an exceptional player, so let's give credit where credit is due, instead of trying to find excuses for Earl.

Well played, Monica.

I was at the tournament playing a match on an adjacent table. Earl played poorly and was so upset with his performance that in the next match whenever he missed he raked the balls. I understand this concept occasionally but the guy Earl was playing admitted he may not run 3 balls. Earl was obviously not focusing and IMO should not have thrown in the towel the way he did. I was talking to the poor guy that bought Earl in the auction and he had to have felt like he got violated in the posterior.

I was not trying to imply that Earl needed an excuse for losing to Monica as she is a very good player and it is only a race. I was just stating that Earl is sometimes not the most stable individual and I think this was evident in his reaction to the situation. I think losing to a player that he feels should not beat him was more than enough to get him irritated. I also think the prospect of having to fight through the left side of the bracket in a field as tough as this one also led to his behavior in the second match as well.

Sometimes I feel for the guy and sometimes I see how he brings things upon himself. He still has all the talent in the world but sometimes he is his own worst enemy.

I was there and he raked at least six games after he was leading Monica by a score of 5 to 2 he easily would have won the match if not raking the balls. He did the same thing to next player he played that Nick had just destroyed and this was race to 7 and I belive Earl won 2 or 3 games total, the calcutta buyer should have been po ed. Leonard

I wasn't going to mention the raking the balls against Monica because I like to think she most likely would have been out on most of the games. I also didn't want to make it sound like Earl threw the match or make it sound like she was given a match she didn't deserve. I did mention it (the raking) for the second match because most people on this board probably do not know the player he was playing. This display was the reason the person who bought Earl felt like he got tossed in the creek.

Leonard,
Why didn't you introduce yourself? I played in the tournament and I was sitting with Shannon at the tournament table all day. I was pretty easy to find.

I sat at the tournament end of the high rail with tables at the steps going down to Shannons table, with 2 old fellows that live in Charlotte. I was sitting above table 5 and watched four or five matches there including little Landon playing my friend ( jeffs girl) Christie and his match with Jumping Sammy Jones, and maybe you were one of the next couple matches on table 5 you tell me. Also tell me who you played I know about everyone there. Leonard

Hey I was practicing and holding my own with Nick Varner for about a hour and half before calcutta I shot good when he give me a shot and put the first rack on him and several more, he didn't miss many on those big pockets. I gave the table over to Ron Parks to hit a few then I was in the corner with Stevie and Monica, Helena if that tells you who I am. I will be in Hickory and will ask Shannon if you are there. Leonard

I beat Jimmy Reeves in the first round, played very poorly and lost to Ron Parks in rd 2, then beat some kid 7-2 in the L bracket. I had to end up going home Sunday morning and unfortunately forfeited my match Sunday. I'm the big dark haired guy with the blonde sitting behind you (I think) while they were doing the calcutta.

I am sure I will meet you at the Smoky Mtn Shootout. I just got my flyer in the mail today. You are planning on going aren't you?

My mind ain't getting the pic right now you played Reeves on the back tables I think, maybe see you in Randolph's. Before I left Ted Kauffman from the forums was sitting at the same spot with us if you know him.

Yea I hope to get there again last time there my ol buddy froze to death and he prolly wont go back and wife gets sick in the mountains, shes from Roam Mtn Tennesee on Fork Mtn rd. and wont go home to visit cause she stays sick the whole time. We going to get land anytime we want it but whats the use?

Actually, anyone who cares about pool and its future should be POed. As is so often the case when Earl attends a tourney, we can only hope that nobody that would ever consider investing in pro pool was there to watch him take another bite out of his sport's integrity and credibility. In all competitive sports, giving less than a total effort is unprofessional.

Just once, I'd like to hear one of his fellow competitors take vocal exception to that unprofessionalism. I know I can rule it out here on the forum, where Earl gets a free pass as a misunderstood bad boy whose unprofessionalsim is excusable because he has been so successful in competition.
