I have read every post in this thread. I agree with most, not all. Think about this thread. After a show there woud be several threads showing fabulous cues! No longer.
I used to come to the gallery first, looking forward to see the various cues guys were posting. You just knew that they would always be knock outs. Many of these guys no longer post. Is it that they just have not bought cues because their collections are mature or the change in the population of our membership here on AZ? I tend to this a little of both.
If someone cares enough to take pictures and share them, They are not showing off. They are doing it to share with fellow enthusiasts...this creates a bond through common interest. I have met a number of great guys through AZ and am very grateful for these friendships both online but especially in person. That has never happened on FB.
The real issue should be what can we do to restore the atmosphere that brought us all here initially.
Phil, you’re a good example of why I’m here. I share your thoughts as well.
There are likely a number of reasons for the decline in participation here in the gallery forum. While I have no evidence to back it up with, I suspect the current economy is a major reason. Where we used to see 8-10 real big cues with fresh designs posted here each year, we now might see 2-4 cues. Unique design work is especially difficult and time consuming. Trust me; I know what went into the Gatsby. Then comes all the planning, programming and parts utilization management. There are cue makers who could write a book on what must be done prior to even turning a blank. Time is money. I believe that is one reason why the ICCS appears to be headed toward a biannual rather than yearly event. Collectors and makers alike are finding both time and money increasingly difficult to come by.
As you say, most cues being posted are done so for everyone’s enjoyment. Equally important, it highlights the makers. There are many posted cues that had the owner not gone to the trouble of sharing; many wouldn’t even know that a certain maker even existed (IMO). Without present and past posters like you, Ken Kerner, Will, JimmyRayK, Jamie, Bill Grassley, and Steve Piesner, I wouldn’t be collecting. Remember Steve, he rarely posts here anymore.
I’ve been debating with myself on whether to post up pics of some cues I’ve come by over the last few years. Most have been seen at one time or another, either shows or here, but I would imagine many members haven’t or wouldn’t remember. I think that it might be a good thing but I’m still thinking.
One last thought, I think we dropped the ball sort to speak when we let the AZBilliards COTY event fall into ruin. I wish I knew more about what it would take to again make that a successful endeavor here on AZ. On the surface at least, it seemed to rally members and gave us all a capsule look at some of the best cues, both classic and modern. Perhaps it will come back. I suspect that it will.
