this'll be my first time to SBE, and my girlfriend's now into the game. ;)

wondering if it's a smoking or non-smoking venue?

and it sounds like parking is tough sometimes? we'll be staying with friends in Glenside, about 20 minutes away, and needing to park each day. any special hints needed?

thanks, and looking foward to meeting many of you!

It's non-smoking. You can smoke outside in the cold, though.

Parking sucks BIG TIME. Better camp out at the Conference Center parking lot, get there VERY EARLY, or take a shuttle/cab, FWIW!

It's a very cool pool mecca, and you will be glad you went! :)

Are we still playing?

They have cleverly set aside the entire area immediately outside of the front doors for smoking, so that everyone, even non smokers, can inhale all the cigarette smoke you may need for several hours just by walking past the throng of shivering smoke hounds, thus saving mad coin on tobacco!

That Allen thinks of EVERYTHING to help the pool playing public in these difficult economic times.

Parking completely blows. As for the smoking, the official rule is that there is no smoking in the pit, however people stick to that rule about as well as they stick to the posted "no gambling" rules.

One of the best parts about this event is it is now non-smoking. If I remember correctly the pit should be smoke free too. I believe alll smoking is limited to outdoors even if it is right outside the entry doors.

parking is just fine...

there has been ample parking each of the last 6 or 7 years that I've attended.

To be clear, yes, parking can be challenging in that you may not be lucky to get a spot near the building, but I have never seen this supersized lot completely full.

Wear comfortable shoes.

Best,
Brian kc

I forgot about that. You're right. Also, bring a folding chair if you want to sweat some of the action pit games, unless you enjoy standing on your feet for hours on end. :p

How funny is this:

During one of my morning matches last year, over the intercom came the following announcement:

Hotel guests who have removed furniture from their rooms will be charged if these items are not returned immediately.

All I could imagine was maybe people had taken furniture from their rooms to the pit for comfort while sweating and the maids discovered this on their morning rounds. :D:grin-square::wink:

Best,
Brian kc

I remember people sitting in the front row of the action pit selling their front-row seats to those who couldn't take standing on their feet. :grin-square:

thanks to everyone for the tips!

we're both non-smokers, so that's good news for us spending more time there!

i was figuring with 2500 spaces there must be Something available if you're willing to walk (we're both in good shape). i'm hearing disagreement, but tempted to believe KC -- what about it, others? is it Really full, or you just wanted to be closer? has anyone ever really Not gotten a space?

I went to the last four or five SBEs and always found a parking space. It's always crowded, but I'd be surprised to see every last space taken.

I have gone to SBE for the last 12 years and have never not gotten a parking space. I have had to walk because the close spaces were full; however, I have never seen it so full where I could not get a parking space.

Here is a little picture of the site. The parking on the far right is also used if available, but the hotel guests tend to fill these up and not leave. We always stay at the Radison and rarely move our van unless we have to.

Also, the SBE parking area slopes up and away from the entrance. That's why everyone is telling you to wear comfortable shoes.

Good Luck!

There are always parking spots available, but some of them may be a healthy walk away. That is you may have to park over by the Radisson, but there is an inside walkway from the Radisson to the Scantion/Expo center so you won't be exposed to the weather, just have a bit of a walk. Usually the weather is nice enough (40s) so the walk outside isn't a problem anyways.
This link will take you to a google map http://goo.gl/maps/tcDA. The parking shown on the top of the map is where the best parking is I guess, but as you can see there is plenty further away on the other side of the complex.

i'm a sound engineer in my day job, and you know, i just Wish i ever got site advances as great as the stuff you have provided!!! links, oblique photos, descriptions of topography and walkways? y'all are Amazing.

thanks, everyone, for the detailed info and observations, and see you later this week!!!
