Coat hanger wire works well.

I swear there was a pretty detailed thread in this forum with pictures, and "everything".
I believe the poster used styrofoam balls, which he/she painted.

Maybe it's just me, but I get a lot of satisfaction in crafting things myself.

Here is one that I currently make.

Here are few pictures of the race to 9 format that I have made. I have made race to 10 and race to 15 as well. The hardest and most expensive part in doing it this way is painting the balls and paying for the paint.

They work very well from way across the room. You can tell what the score is on a table at the opposite end of the room. The balls ar 4" diameter and I think using the same color as the ball's number really helps with this visually.

Additionally the tension can be adjusted and or balls can be added to the framework with this setup.

Since you already have the correct paint, would you be interested in making me one of these? I'd want wooden balls instead of styrofoam, and would gladly pay for both the wooden balls, other materials, and a fee for making it, of course.

I was thinking about making mine own as well, but the cost of the paint is what was putting me off of it. PM me if interested.

I don't understand where the "cost of paint" comment came from, but anyway...

You can also use a set of "Expo" dry-erase or permanent markers. They are conveniently colored the same as (pre TV) pocket billiard (pool) balls.

here is my idea , but never found time to build it.
The balls are regular poolballs, but the smalest size possible (
i think i had found a set of poolballs that are 1" small and costed 19.99$ the set on ebay. I bought two of them and they would be perfect for home use, maybe not for a poolhall as they might be to small to be seen from far.

find a guy with some good woodworking skills, and give him the picture of my idea. shouldnt cost much to make it. (depending what wood you choose) the chalkboard is simply a special chalk paint (you could even use a magnetic paint base coat) sprayed or painted on the wood.

40$ balls
15$ 14-1string
20$ paint
20$ iron string, etc..
xx$ wood (depending what wood you'd use)

The styrofoam balls work well, but do not use wire as it will cut into your shaft when you are moving the balls. You can get plastic coated cable, or heavy grade fishing line. A metal rod will also work well. A set of colored magic markers shouldn't set you back much if you are on a tight budget, but craft paint isn't that expensive. You can probably get everything you need to build it at Michaels and Home Depot.

The styrofoam balls I used are 3-4" diameter balls so they are big enough that you can move them with having your shaft touch the wire. In addition when this setup is used in the poolroom you can see the score the whole way across the room for each table without having to get out of your seat.

I have made soem with the rod as well as the coated wire for certain customers who are concernedabout shaft damage.
