Scruggs Sneaky Pete Prices Up and Down Like Wall Street

Hi,

Can anyone explain why Scruggs sneaky petes that were selling for $600, $700, and even close to $800 just a couple of weeks ago are now selling at prices close to half those numbers? What's with the sudden boom and bust? Has anyone else noticed this, or am I just losing my mind?

Thanks

I have yet to see a Scruggs SP sell for 600-800 dollars. I would say the 400 dollar range is more in-line. Who and where did someone pay 800?

I have seen them as high as $450 but never higher then that.I guess there are people out there who dont know what they are doing paying higher then that, considering that Tim dosen't even make the sneaky petes himself.
There are a ton of quality CM's out there that can make you a great custom to your specs for that kind of money.

The reason for this is fairly simple. These are not sneaky pete's. You'll notice little things in each of them like the ivory joint collars or the ivory hoppe ring. At least one of them is made of cocobolo which in and of itself is will put the price up a bit. A real Scruggs sneaky pete looks just like a house cue when assembled. It has an invisible joint. It is a 4 point, maple and rosewood cue, and the TS logo is tiny and carved between the points, NOT on a phenolic buttcap or a hoppe ring. These are modified sneaky petes but not true sneaky petes. Still, if you ask me, the price is a bit high for my taste.

 I personally would buy a Cue to Play with. Nothing Else, as the only thing that has a Constant, Instant VALUE is the American Dollar. It frosts me when someone say My Cue, Case, or what ever is worth X. As to find the True Value of anything, you have to find a BUYER will to pay your Price. If not the Buyer set the price, when the seller says SOLD. :)

Right on,those are not sneaky pete's. Just because it says sneaky pete doesnt mean they know what there talking about, sneaky pete is a house cue or dufferin cue that a cuemaker has modified but you should not be able to tell its a custom cuemakers cue from across the room like these examples

The regular Scruggs SP's were going for $300 - $400 for years. It's kind of surprising they sell for more than that. I have an early one I bought for $300. They're a great SP by the way. Mine is a real SP, just a bar cue with a joint and an ivory ferrule. Very old, straight as an arrow, and plays better than 90% of the custom cues out there.

An older Scruggs, points, MOP inlays & veneers, just sold on ebay for $610...was sold by a pawn shop, needed restoration and had some wobble, but still....

Sneaky Pete and Custom Cues

Ive been studying cues for the past few years and the market does wax and wane with particular cue makers coming into and out of popularity. I do agree with the other post that those are modified sneaky petes and could have been brunswick conversions which would up the price considerably. You are much better off looking at getting a custom playing cue, check out the DP I just listed or the Barry Cameron Bubinga no point "sneaky" either of these cues make a statement and are a little fancier than a plain old sneaky pete.

I couldn't agree more. I just bought 1 about an hour ago for $261 plus I have one with the white plastic (ivory) joint I got for $200. I can't wait for these goofballs to start paying $900 for them so I can put mine on Ebay

Ok, if you can buy a Scruggs Sneaky Pete for 300 or 400$ DO IT ! I know plenty of people who would buy one in a heart beat, only because Scruggs isnt making them anymore. Now his partner is still making a Sneaky Pete, but its not made by Tim.

Its kinda like if BludWorth stopped making cues, or say you couldnt order/buy a new SouthWest cue, how much would those cues start to go for? Its supply n demand. yea when you could still get a Scruggs, it cost what like 150-200$ ???

Tim has not made a sneaky pete in years. Bob Frey was Tim's assistant, Bob made many of the Scruggs SP's. When the two went their seperate ways, the Scruggs SP was no more. Tim points those looking for a SP in Bob's direction.

i remember buying them for 200 a piece in the late 80s. I think we need to come up with a new term for the "fancy petes". A level system or something. Besides I'm tired of sneaky petes why not crafty carls, sly sams or yes slippery dicks?

have a good weekend

I like "Not So Sneaky Pete" or "Fancy Frank" would even be better than that last one. LOL

Scruggs Wrapless

I have several Scruggs Wrapless cues. Paid $200.- $350.00. Bocote, Cocobolo, Hoppe, Joint collars, Ivory, and True plain Sneekys. Also I have Bob Frey cues. Have bought and sold many more. Of the pristine condition ones I keep I would not take $1000.00 for any one of them and they are well worth it to me. Condition means a lot when considering value. I have heard that the original Scruggs Sneaky Pete type cues were made from Valley house cues.

I walked into a pool hall and thought I opened the wrong door into a doctors office. Everyone was saying: "Sew his ass up! Sew his ass up!

People believed the hype and wanted them bad enough so the way over paid. Now they are paying for it because they are just sneakys to begin with and most are very plain. They are like any other commodity if you buy high what do you expect to sell it for when the bottom drops out???
