Another post asked a sealer quest but I did not want to highjack it.

Has any one experienced water based sealer for use on shafts???

I have been using Deft lacquer based but the word lacquer is taboo so Lowes and everyone local has stopped carrying it,,, I had to buy it on line for the last quart.

I've used Deft finish products and found their quality to meet or exceed my expectations.
I'm not currently using a Deft sanding sealer but it's lacquer-based also. Lacquer works.
Your not being able to purchase locally may not be all that bad. Online has advantages.
A few clicks to purchase and pay and you're done. No wasted time - no wasted gas.
IOWs, they can ship cheaper than you can go & get.

Happy Holidays Kim,

never used any other products

so i can not compare, but for about 20 years i have been using hightowers sealer.

i dont know if the cheapest, or dont know if its the best, but i do know if it aint broke dont fix it.

after building about 475 cues i am still using chris's sealer.

I always used Minwax sealer, mainly because it worked well and is available everywhere. Last time I bought sealer though I bought the Zinser brand and I'm not liking it much, Do you guys recommend the brand Chris has over Minwax, and if so what is the difference?

I believe the Minwax sealer is water based... how does it work?

I believe the Zinssler is a shellac... I tried that and didn't like it... if you clean the shaft with an alcohol wipe, It gets sticky.....

By volume try mixing 3 parts Denatured Alcohol with 1 part Shellac flakes.

I think you will like this combo for sealing your shafts.

Well that is subjective really because I started with it, so never had a comparison until I bought the Zinser. I always thought it worked well and would have bought it again but it was sold out so I got the Zinser brand instead. The minwax dried fast and filled well I thought. The Zinser brand is much thinner, doesn't dry very fast, doesn't seem to fill/seal as well with 1 coat, and it feels sticky unless it has a long time to dry. I just don't like it. I am going to have to get something else and not opposed to trying something else if you guys recommend a better product than Minwax.

Any particular brand of Shellac? Are you using the same mixture on Butts as well?
I assume you would just mix this as you need it?

the minwax polycrylic is the nuts for sealing out shafts...i've tried them all this is the best by far IMO.

Hi,

I forgot to state shellac flakes and amended my post.

I seal all of my butts and shafts between cuts and after the final cut as it is my sanding sealer before epoxy.

I mix it and store in used mustard containers. Just give it a little shake. It penetrates colored veneers very nicely to avoid color cross contamination when sanding with 100 + psi air.

JMO,

Rick

Has anyone tried endure sanding sealer?
If anyone has what is your opinion on the final result.

Do the lacquer based sealers cross contaminate colors?

I have.
It's pretty thick.
Reading this thread makes me cringe a little .
So, many still use nasty chemicals as part of sealing .
How many here have their doors open and have very good ventilation when using that nasty chemical ? If you use them btw, wear gloves b/c the chemical goes through your skin.
I vote for Minwax Polycrylic for shafts' final seal.

Do you use the satin version or the gloss??

Kim
i use the Gloss....i was using water white sanding sealer for many years good stuff just don't like the lacquer smell.

many of the maryland cue makers were using this stuff for a long time many probably still do.......i like the gloss water based polycrylic i cut it 75% poly, 25% water, apply with paper towel then burnish with dry towel then sand w/ 600 out to 2000 then i apply nanowax then sand out to 4000 then i apply renaissance over nano then burnish the shaft looks and feels like glass for a long time.
