Segregation - The Shame Revived

I see that a couple of video threads I posted have been Moved.

Now there is a Snooker category to go with a Straight Pool category.

The Straight Pool category gets all of two or three new threads a day.

It remains to be seen what activity the Snooker category can attract, even with the support of the U.S. Snooker Association.

Personally, I play, in order of preference, snooker, 8-ball, 9-ball. I like to watch, in order of preference, 9-ball, snooker, 8-ball. The pool hall where I have spent the most time has snooker tables, 9 foot Gold Crown pool tables, and a carom table.

Given the liimited activity in the Straight Pool category and the likely low activity in the Snooker category, one wonders what is gained by their creation and the banishment of these disciplines from the Main Forum.

Is the Main Forum to be used only to discuss pool shoes, avatars, and as the battleground of personal attacks? :D

What would really help is a category for "Cue Selection and Maintenance" which would eliminate many of the most repetitive threads here. I agree with you that a separate snooker section is the best way to avoid exposing any of the pool players to snooker.

you are right but the solution requires a lot of moderating

The main forum should be about the cue sports in their various forms. The non pool related forum should be used far more instead of posting on the main forum, something most of us are sometimes guilty of to get more traffic.

Because the main forum moves so fast under the load of mostly off topic or marginal threads, the straight pool forum was founded so that threads stayed up front long enough to be seen and discussed. I assume the same reason is behind the creation of the snooker forum.

A site once dedicated to another niche activity eventually made their main forum the "off topic" forum and have moved their hardcore posts to smaller side forums since they were in the minority and the coffee pot crowd had taken over the main board anyway. Sponsorship is down, traffic is down, and of course income is down. I think that experiment is doomed to failure.

The problems are obvious but working solutions are hard to come by, partially because of software limitations.

I agree with the premise of this thread. I'd get rid all nearly all of the subforums and bring the action back to the main forum.

Temporary subforums (such as the US Open 9-ball forum that we all enjoy every year) can and have served a useful purpose on AZB, but I think the addition of countless forums has devalued my forum experience.

Any topic that cuesports players are talking about a lot is a topic I care about. The beauty of the main forum when it was all-encompassing as far as cuesports-related topics are concerned was that I could sign on to AZB and, as the most active threads, the ones that defined what cuesport enthusaists were chatting about, were always the first ones I saw. Instantly, I knew what the hot topic was on the forum.

Now, to figure out what people are chatting about involves visiting numerous subforums, which sometimes seems like detective work for me.

I realize in full that AZHOUSEPRO, a deserving hero to all of us who post, has done everything in his power to segment AZB to accommodate posters with specialized interests, but in offering such segmentation, I feel he has made
AZBILLIARDS worse. Nowadays, it seems that if any five posters call out together for a new subforum, they are accommodated, almost as surely as those that call out for a thread to be given "sticky" status.

My respect and gratitude for AZHOUSEPRO is without limit, but I feel he has, most unintentionally, made the AZB experience a little less enjoyable for people like me who are interested in all topics pertainning to cuesports.

Just one man's view.

Would you rather go to a party and try and hold a conversation in a room with hundreds of other people all talking loudly? Or in a place with several rooms where you can hear yourself talk when in one room?

If everything was piled into one forum - you're still gonna have the same number (about 20?) threads on each page. Threads will be flying around and you won't be able to find what you're looking for as easy, if you're coming back to a thread after a while.

And here I thought this thread was going to be about racial segregation back in the day. I don't see where the term 'shame' enters into having sub-forums on a website. :/

as far as posting videos i don't think it would be so bad if u kept them all in 1 post instead of a new one every day, some of them are nice but they do get repetitive and some probably complained about them

snooker is my favorite sport but the snooker sub forum doesn't look like it's going anywhere, i want to learn as much as i can about it but i asked a pretty basic question over a day ago and no one answered it at all, either they dunno, don't care or aren't seeing it, i won't bother with anymore unless it picks up a lot more, similar to it is the 3c section, it only has 89 posts since it's been going, but i guess they are nice for new members to just go directly to and not have to bother with searching for specific topics

i don't play straight pool or care much about it, but i do read all the posts there because there's some great posts with great info by some of the best members on azb

i agree with bob that there needs to be a subforum on "cues" theres a cues forum why wouldn't it have it's own sub forum? not only could it have new posts but the best cues topics could be looked up an relocated to it for easier access, i would also like to see a "how would u play this" sub forum this would be the most useful forum on azb

sjm is overall the best poster on azb but i disagree with how u view the forum, i've been on other forums and to me it seems like over half the content on any of them is very similar topics recycled every few weeks, the same questions asked/answered over and over it gets old, with more sections these common questions can more likely be automatically answered and it will force the forum to take on new fresh topics and not be so redundant

First, Johnson, thanks for the compliment, but the fact is that AZB has countless great posters, and none deserves to be singled out as the best.

Hey, maybe I'm wrong, or just a bit myopic. My point was really that some are interested in pretty much anything that a lot of cuesport-enthusiast posters are conducting online chat about. Such threads will always lie on page one in whichever forum they appear. I think the recent segmentation of the forum may work for many, it just doesn't work for me because it takes me longer to find out what people are chatting about if I have to visit so many subforums. I do agree that those whose interests are more defined and less broad are served well by the new segmentation of the forum, but an argument against is that those NOT interested in things like snooker or straight pool are less likely to be exposed to threads pertaining to those subjects.

Thanks for relating your experience with other forums.

comments like these reaffirm what i said, i think a lot here would agree, by overall i'm not just referring to u as a poster but as a person in general and it really does show through the board how well rounded u are about pool as well as life in general

i'm not sure if it could be done on here but on another forum i frequent they have dozens of sub-forums, but when u look at the sites homepage u see the last 10 posts that were started/replied to, which is the old style but only the last 10 posts, i wonder if u could view the entire forum as being 1 overall section instead of how it is now, 3/4 of the threads there are repetitive so i just view the top 10 threads instead of the actual forum

i was just checking and if u click on "new posts" it shows u the last 20 or so posts on the entire forum maybe this could be extended to last 100 or to 5 pages of 20 and that would be what u were wanting, u can also click on "todays posts" under quick links that seems to be what u are looking for?

Thanks for pointing this out. I was completely unaware of this forum feature. Should have known AZHOUSEPRO had me covered. Sorry, Mike.
