Self-Proclaimed Open Level Shooters

It's no secret I'm your average B player, but based upon my readings here over the years, I just ask myself, "WWJD?" when I'm at a loss.... ;)

Most people on here won't even give their real names. If you can't get their name it is impossible to gauge their speed. Some do and play really strong. Take the forum for what it is worth. If you know who is respected, just read their opinion. I know a player on this site that is B speed at BEST and never bets a penny and never plays a tournament, but talks like a killer player/gambler on here. .

i dont appreciate you calling me out like this

open level?

There seem to be a lot of pool experts and self proclaimed open level shooters on this site.

What accomplishments/proof do you have to back it up?

Before you go getting all pissy and asking who the hell I think I am, I will tell you. I am just a person who shoots league, OMFG a league hack, and someone who loves to shoot.

There seem to be an awful lot of know-it-alls here, who may or may not be as good as they say. I am just trying to find out how many of you can prove it.

No, I am not woofing either and am not trying to challenge you. Just challenging your claims or self-attributed pool Godliness.
I have been in many local tournaments that are referred as "open", meaning there is no handicap. In these tournaments you just race to whatever,7 games or 9. But at National level, for example:BCA in Las Vegas, The Open level is the lowest level. Above that is Intermediate and Master level players.

Well, for myself I've had numerous tournament wins with my handicap in the A class. I was ranked number one in my prefecture for 2 years, was designated as the captain of my prefecture's team going to the all Japan tournament. I've got 2 boxes full of trophies, plaques, and cups. I'm not bigheaded about my game but you have to have a certain amount of ego involved if you want to be a pool player. I took about 5 years off and since my return 3 years ago I don't play as well as I used to but I just don't have the patience to be at the table for hours on end practicing to get my game back up to that level. I play well enough now that I could join a tournament and feel that I *MAY* have a chance at winning if I'm in the zone. 8 years ago when I walked into a tournament I felt I was one of the favored ones in the room. Now, I feel I have an outside chance. Even though my stroke isn't what it once was I still have the knowledge in my head that I feel I can pass on to younger players.
MULLY
let me edit this and say I can join amateur tournaments and feel that I have a chance, not pro level tourney's

I think a lot of people were pretty humble in this thread, given their offensive firepower. I'm not calling any out, but guys like Blackjack and JoeyA aren't asking many people for weight... that's all I know. Call it open player, closed player, up down and all-around player.... call it whatever makes you feel good at night. Whether Blackjack runs a 150 on ya or Joey tightens the 1-hole clamp so hard your nuts pop, they're open players.

Then you have guys like Jude who is an open player (I remember reading the announcement a year ago or so). How do I know? Based on the short clips and his knowledgeable posts, I wouldn't bet a penny against it.

...hmmm, come to think of it, there are a LOT of good players who post on here. The above players are more public about their speed, but there are some professed "B" players on this site who I know would give the best players a big, big headache.

Who is chapping your ass, spouting off about being an open player? I'm really a nit gambler, but I'd give odds on-the-blind they probably are.

Just like the "Ghost " thread shows (Cubc put down he's even with the nine ball ghost), I think most people think they play close to what their top game is and mentally block out all the days they play like crap.

Golfers do the same thing.

There are probably 100's of players here who runout well on good days and are a threat to beat the 9 or 10 ball ghost, but average it out for all your pool playing and I think people will usually find they're a bit lower in rating than they believe.

Playing runout pool, day after day, is HARD to do for most people.

how about this does your state have a open tournament for state players only go to that in maine the favorite is always mike dechaine but last year guess what he didnt win lost to a player on sunday he would beat 18 out of 20 times if your state has touring pros any player that finish strong after them is probably open class

I used to be very much an "open player" but then i started playing safe, and now i guess i can't say i'm an "open player" anymore. :)

When my buddy Steve announced it, yes I'll have to admit, I was a bit giddy about the whole thing. I mean, I work a 9-5 job, commute every morning to the office, try to manage my typical every day boring life. Being rated as an Open level pool player is definitely high on the neat-meter.

However, I don't play for rankings or tournaments or money or even pride (okay, maybe a little pride). I play because even if only for a moment, there is something incredibly beautiful about doing something perfect. That's what I strive for. I love those brief and wonderful little moments. It's so exhilerating. That feeling has little to do with the word "open" and much much more to do with a genuine love of pool.

I could be wrong but I think we all get that from time to time. The more you play, the better you get, the more those moments happen.

The sad thing is i think the better you get the less often you feel that excited feeling when you play perfect for a little bit, at least for me. I used to love practicing years ago but now it's not even close to how it used to be. I used to love watching players that could do things that i couldn't do, and now i don't get to see that anymore. Their is just nothing new now.

I think you make a legitimate point. It's important as far as I see it, to try and keep things fresh. I'll work 10 hours, sometimes just go home, play on the computer a bit, go on a date, see a movie.. By the time I finally make it to the poolroom, I'm chompin' and the bit! I get to the room and the only thing racing through my head is, "Oh, I finally get to hit some balls!" If I play 90% of my average speed when I first get back, I'm excited that I didn't forget it all! If I play above average, I might just pitch camp on Table 10 for a week.

That's the coolest post ever. My goal in life is to say the same thing. *COUGH* OPEN PLAYER *COUGH*
*COUGH*

Do you play three cushion at all Donnie?

I know you play fantastic pool so I can understand how watching pool (especially nine ball) might not do anything for you, but there is a whole world of three cushion shots that would keep you busy for awhile if learning new shots is what you want.

I'd never claim it will earn you any money or help your pool game at all, many players play better shape but pocket less balls at pool in my experience, but for pure pool/billiards entertainment and new shots, the game is awesome.

Even excluding the Sayginer trick shot stuff, find some Sang Lee and Blomdahl videos and see if you might not be interested in learning some new stuff.

I tried it a little but it seems to get me out of stroke.

Most people play better when there isnt anybody shooting back at them putting some heat on them, $$$-does funny things to people's game too. Lucky for me most of the time I play better in tight spots than playing alone. I'm board with that too, there was a time when I wasnt, now its the "same old shit" its like doing cardio-its good for or your game but man is it boaring. Sure 3C has a life time or 2's amount of learning it-unless your Jay Helfert's sister then you have it fiogured out by the time your 95 years old(see Jay Helfert's sister thread for more information), back to my point, while there is more to learn in 3C that there is time to learn it-its still a game with 3 balls and a cue, there are better things to do sometimes. Action is THE ONLY reason I'm even half way into pool at this point in pool playing life-thank God I dont do it to pay the bill's. i'm just a hobbiest B player than dosent know much. Where is Tooth????;) ;)
