After reading everyone talk about "Little Sergio" I wasn't sure if this was the same Sergio that I would run into at different tournaments around this area until Jay posted his last name. I used to hear stories that Sergio Vargas was the best one-handed player in the world but never witnessed his play. I haven't seen him around here in well over a year and someone told me that he had to go back to Mexico to lay low for a while. Anyway...does anybody have any good stories about Sergio in action?? I used to really admire his game and he even showed me a few different things, so I was just kinda curious of any war stories about him.

I'll tell you one story. He beat every one who tried to play him one handed for about 20 years. Freddie says Artie beat him playing 8-Ball one handed, so that's the first loss I've heard of.

Back in the 80's in LA, Ronnie offered to play him some One Pocket up-in-the-air and Sergio declined. Sergio asked Ronnie to play 9-Ball and he declined.

That is one hell of a statement, Jay. Because most people don't have a clue that Ronnie Allen played jam up 9 ball at one time too. He won quite a few 9 ball tournaments. I never saw Sergio play jacked up but if Ronnie wouldn't play him 9 ball that way he had to be, "The" monster.

In the mid 80's he played Efren Reyes 2 sets of nine ball going to 11. I think they played for $3000 or maybe it was $5000 a set. He won the first set like maybe 11 to 3. In the second set Sergio was up 10 to 3 when Efren brought it to hill hill. In the last game Sergio drew the rock back about 4 feet after pocketing the 7 ball to get perfect on the 8. All this jacked up. I saw him play many times. I believe he could execute some shots better one handed up in the air then if he used both hands.

Wow!! I had no idea he was that good. This makes me want to play him some jacked up 9 ball just to see him play.

Actually, they did play "for a while" and Ronnie quit him. That's when he asked him to play One Pocket one handed. Nothing doing.

That's pretty darn strong!!

Hey Jay, did you ever see him get into serious games not playing 1-handed?? From what it seems, he faced and conquered the best playing 1-handed.
