Ask yourselves is pool a sport or a game. I give my thoughts.
I say game. And not a very sporting one at that!
Nick :)

Really, again??

It is a sport. The International Olympic Committee does NOT give consideration to non sports.

Is it a high intensity, or athletic sport, well no. So what, either is "polo" or that silly sport that you push big bricks across the ice whilst someone sweeps with a broom on the ice to move it along !!!

There is hand eye coordination involved and that is the biggest difference. Heck, most folks playing bad pool can be tied to their poor stroke. Ya know, just like the sport of golf :)

I guess you need to define "game" and "sport" and then make a judgement based on the definitions.

If chess can be considered a sport, then surely pool could be considered a sport.

I believe it's a game, but I believe it could also be competed in as a sport.

It all depends on those at the top making the decisions. They go by their own judgements, make the rules, etc, and we have to live by them.

So, if they want to call it a sport, it would be a sport.

I'm kinda amazed at all the goofy olympic "games" considered sports.

Pool fits either, it depends on how you view a "sport" or a "game"

A sport is where something has a chance of getting killed. For example hunting, fishing, falconry, drag racing,...

So, it does not fit THAT definition (not trying to imply that that is the only acceptable definition for a sport.)

Guess you've never seen the cueball fly off the table after a break shot and clobber someone.........

Game. Anything that allows you to smoke is not a sport.

Depends on how you play the game which is a sport that at times elevates itself to art. It depends on how you look at it and what you aim to get out of it. Excuse the puns. :-)

Sport or game?

We've been through this a bunch of times: legally, if it were a sport, the late Steve Mizerak would never have been allowed to work for Miller Lite. FTC regulations specifically bar any active athlete from endorsing any type of alcoholic product, and the Miz was definitely still active in pool at the time. GF

Pool - The Master Game

My question is "do we want to be the least popular sport, or the best game?"....I'll agree with Jimmy "Pretty Boy Floyd" Mataya "POOL IS THE MASTER GAME!!!"

It's both. It's the intent of play that determines the category for that moment. It's a game when people get together to play for casual entertainment and enjoyment. This can happen for pool, baseball, football, soccer, hockey, and many other "Sports". A game becomes a "Sport" when the game becomes organized in a professional manner with established rules, sponsors, brackted and ranked competition, and money for payment of competition or awards is offered to competitors. Just like in pool, baseball, football, soccer and many other "Sports". Since the IOC recognized pool as a sport, I accept the idea that the game I love to play is a sport. Unlike other sports, our sport offers multiple game variations to play and compete at. But still, fundamentally, the game in it's organized manner is a sport.

sport first, with some game aspect.

Just thinking of the words themselves and not any historical description or use, I would say that it is a sport simple because it requires physical ability to perform. Unlike say... chess, cards, or scrabble which requires mental ability only. There is clearly is a game aspect aspect to it, i.e. strategy, defense . But in my opinion it is clearly a test of a physical ability and therefore a sport.

Really, folks are dying in fishing competitions?? And in tennis and badminton, and in track and field?? And sorry, hunting certainly is not a sport.....hunting unarmed animals that don't know there is a game going on, can't really be called a sport.
