Shaft blank straightness question

Hi all,

I have a potential seller who gave this description regarding the straightness of the grain on his shaft blank stock.

...the spline straight center
growth is within 3/8" end to end...

Can someone tell me what this means? Is that good enough or is that not acceptable for good quality shafts?

Thanks,
Chris

To me that would mean the growth rings probably have a curve that deviates 3/8 of an inch for the length of the shaft. I'd say "You're kidding right?" That's WAY too much...

it is hard to tell from the wording above, but what i think that is supposed to mean is the center annual ring on one end is only 3/8" off center on the other end.the center ring deviates no more than 3/8" off center.

it really isn't that bad at all.

i will take all the shafts with 3/8" center ring runout that no one wants.

It depends on where the grain deviates. If it's near the joint & the front 25" of the shaft are dead straight then it's a good shaft. If it has 3/8" deviation down 5" from the ferrule where the shaft is only 1/2" thick, then there is serious issue. If it deviates only 3/8" over the full 29", then it might be ok. There are too many variables for this description to work. You need a picture of the shaft grain if it's a concern to you.
