Shaft Question

I like a smaller tip diameter so I'm having my shaft shaved down to 12mm. I want to be able to spin the ball a lot easier but I don't want the shaft to be too whippy. Although I'd prefer it to be more whippy than stiff. What taper and taper length do you recommend with a 12mm tip diameter?

Better sit down. You are about to learn more than you ever wanted to know, about shafts & their tip size...JER

This taper works great.
X being how far down from the tip, Y being how much the cutter backs off. Double the Y number and that gives you the overall diameter change.
X0. Y0.
X6.5 Y-.0035
X12.5 Y-.021
X16.5 Y-.038
X20.5 Y-.069
or
6.5" 12.17mm
12.5" 13.06mm
16.5" 13.9

it really depends on what you like, but at 12mm i would think you have to be careful with extending the taper that long.you could get someone to pro taper it 14" and then have it grow alot real fast to help out,but it really boild down to what you like and are used to.

Which is about 1 MM taper in about a foot?

Or you could fork up for a stiff old growth maple ala Efren's $13 cue with a bowling alley shaft.

i like it too,but i don't think it will be "whippy" enough for him
Whippy has nothing to do with cueball action.
But, if he's convinced of that, what can you do?

Joey, awhile back you were telling me what taper you like on your cue and i misunderstood.i guess you said 1 mm and i thought you said .10" in the first 12".this whole time i thought you played with the stiffest shafts in America.

I'm not sure what I like since I've only had a few cues and they've all been about 12.75 with a 13" pro taper. The main objective is to have a smaller tip diameter so that I can stab the cue ball more precisely and apply english more easily. That's all I really need. So with the x and y thing, you are saying that I only need about a 6.7 inch taper? I'm a little confused.

Go with a stiff taper for now.
You can always sand down the wood.
Pro-taper is overrated, misused and overused.

So what's the final consensus, give me exact numbers on what kind of taper I should get for a shaft with a 12.00mm tip diameter. Judged from that formula, is said I should get a 6.5 inch taper.

I'm just a little confused that's all. So what has the most to do with cueball action and spinning the ball without as much effort?
