Forgive me for not knowing...but I want to. I've heard so much about "runout" and "sugar marks". I'm pretty sure I don't know because I have never seen a shaft with these attributes? Anybody care to give a quick explanation and possibly some pics of good examples v.s. bad? One thing I have seen is usually a regular maple shaft with a particular pattern/streak running down the length of a shaft and the exact same thing approximately 180 degrees on the other side. Is this the "runout"? I think "sugar marks" are the discoloration or darker marks I have seen in few shafts. Educate me :)
 
Sugar marks are the dark spots / flecks on the maple also the color between the grain lines. Runout reffers to the grain lines running off of the shaft instead of continuing to the tip. All shafts have runout because of the change in diameter from the joint to the tip. However if the grain lines are at any angle across the shaft from joint to tip this is runout. I hope this helps a little bit.

Are the grain lines the growth rings? Also how do you count them...looking at the joint end right? Thanks :)
 
Worm holes and blue green and black streaks are caused by worms.
Trapped sap or syrup in a pocket in the grain is otherwise known as sugar. When it dries in a kiln or by air it has a tan/ brown color. This is a main reason why shafts that are vacuume kiln dried are so white.
Counting the grain lines for what reason? A high growth ring count shaft does not automatically mean it is going to be dense or stiff it just means it is an old piece of wood.

Yes, and yes. I've also been told that "sugar" marks are caused by worms.

i believe it.i have a shaft in the shop that has the strangest pattern sugar marks i have ever seen.the marks are long and squiggly and it looks just like a work trail.
