i buy these from an antique table restorer and its where i get 95% of my shaft wood. only about 10-15 % will be good enough for shafts, and on occasion i will find a couple of real good brw or ebony cues to use for conversions.

the only thing better than good wood,
is GOOD OLD WOOD:thumbup:

Yeah, I've been doing the same thing for 30 years. I used to be in the table restoration business myself and accumulated a bunch of old cues and I have a couple of buddies that have crews that do the work now and bring me old cues all the time. The ones not worthy of using for a cue help me keep the place warm in the winter. I've burned a shitload of ramin wood in my wood stove. lol I also use some of the old junky cues to test CNC programs on. I always test fit anything I do with the cnc and make sure the programs run properly before I run them on "good wood". I've also used some of the old cues for handles. Some of them make very nice figured handles for Merry widow cues even. I hate to waste good wood. If it has no place in a cue it'll at least provide a few BTU's come winter.

I've never seen one that is straight from those house cues.
They used green wood then.

Yeah, I don't get a lot of shaft wood from them but every now and then... If you cut them off just above the points and center them properly you can get a good shaft. By the time they are 50 or 60 years old, if they were going to move, they already would have.

I was thinking the same thing I got a corner full of them and not 1 even close to being able to make a shaft out it.

maybe 10%

i'm 67 and that's what i keep telling the young women.

i have bought 500 of these cues from the same dealer and of the 500, i have got about 20 great shafts. old, tight grain, and dark in color. i cannot find this type of shaft any place accept in old cues. you are right i have yet to find one that was straight, but a few are straight enough to cut just above the points and retaper.
its just something about cutting a cue that might have been in a smoke filled, dim lit, old time pool hall for years, reusing a piece of wood that might have shot thousands of balls. recycling i dont think so. its just the best wood i can find.

Pardon me if this is the wrong place to ask, but I have a need for about 10 - 15 full splice cues for a project. They can be a little beat up, and all busted up on the shaft (I don't need all 58" ... just the bottom 40" or so with the splice). If any of you old-cue horders want to part with a few full splice lumps of wood drop me a PM please.

I remember some years ago when the BCA show was in I think Nashville a guy comes into the show and says his pool room has closed up and he wondered if anyone wanted to come and make an offer for everything. He talked to a lot of guys who didn't want to bother driving like 20 miles to look at a bunch of old equipment, plus they were busy with the show.
Long story short the guy who takes a ride over there ends up buying all his house cues for a $1.00 a piece. Do I need to tell you every one was a Titlest and he had like 150 of them. Although at the time maybe not the rage they are now but still quite a score.
