Shane Van Boening vs. Scottie Sheffler, Over $10,000,000 for Scottie, How much for Shane?

Thanks to his wise real estate investments, Shane will have money for the rest of his life, while many highly paid athletes will be broke within five years of retiring!
stupid statement,
the fact that you can't see into the future not withstanding the whole "broke athlete" mess has nothing to do with the scenario at hand within the pool pro game,

compartmentalize much?

The fans prove that athletes are not "overpaid."

There's a pool lesson in that.

Jeff Livingston
I'm not claiming that they are overpaid when strictly speaking about economics. I believe in the principle that the value of a service or an item (or a skill) is whatever a free and willing buyer is willing to pay to a free and willing seller, and in that sense they are generally paid what they are worth. My assertion is based on the total number of dollars we as a society spend on being entertained rather than on how that money is divided among the providers of that entertainment.

of course not in every case and certainly not in most peoples mind.

but generally you are paid what you are worth. like it or not. accept it.

Stupid is as stupid does!

It is 100% a problem with lack of fan support. I know many pool players who just are not interested in watching top flight play. They love to bang balls, drink beer, and tell you about that one shot three years ago. Over and over. Spend time and money to support the elite in the sport? Hell no. It's sad, really.

I think that's a weird way to look at it. When I go to an NFL game, I'm not paying for the ticket to support the players, I'm paying for the entertainment value. Pool is not (and likely never will be) entertaining enough to charge admission to watch. Take a look at the events in Vegas every year. Thousands of pool players are there, and there is always seating available to watch the best players on the planet. And it's FREE TO WATCH. Even pool enthusiasts don't find it interesting to watch others play.

You are 100% correct. The flip side is that most spectator sports are very active in trying to make their event entertaining, whether it be marching bands, cheerleaders, music, halftime 3 point contests, etc.

Once again golf stands as an anomaly...dress codes, strict behavior guidelines for fans, no crowd noise during play, etc. and yet their tourneys are packed.., I just don't get it.

To put into perspective Scottie has won more in the four tournaments that he's won this year . More than Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Gary Player earned in there careers

SVB may just be the luckiest man in the world. He's among the best in the world at what he does, he has the admiration of his fans, AND he can go anywhere and do anything he chooses without the hassle of stardom.
It was really interesting to see this play out at the 2019 Mosconi Cup at the Mandalay Bay. The instant the players walked out of the arena and into the casino, they were 99% anonymous.

Yes, that is true. BUT, I'd still take Tiger Woods bank account and stay hidden. His 8 passenger jet landed in Augusta, GA. to attend the Master's. He's got to be worth about a $billion.

I think you nailed it. Pool is not widely accepted as a spectator sport in the US. I think it could probably be better on TV than in person, unless you are very close to the table. I actually do watch a lot of pool on YouTube but even then, I don't need to watch the latest match because there is no cultural significance. I watch F1 and NFL because they are culturally important enough that I want to see what's currently happening. If I miss the Super Bowl, I will hear who won so it won't be as fun to watch later. I admire the excellent play of the pool matches but that's all they are. Snooker has managed to become elevated, I don't see why pool couldn't, although there are plenty of assholes on youtube who are kind enough to tell us how superior snooker is.

No doubt, every kid that chooses pool does so because that's where the big bucks are and, when reaching pro level, is shocked that they aren't yet living on Park Avenue, in Beverly Hills, or at Hyde Park Corner. Yes, as you suspect, Shane's choice of pool must have been a miscalculation. Or maybe you just don't understand what achievement and success are about.

Money is not the only measure of achievement. Shane just lived a lifelong dream and he's on top of the world. Rather than being sad for him because he's being out-earned by some other athletes like Scheffler or Federer (who made over $90 million in 2021), why not be happy for him. The world is full of elite performers in all walks of life who have less money than we think they deserve. Many of them have had to settle for the respect and admiration of those around them.

Rather than bemoaning his lot in life, be glad for Shane, our new World Pool Champion and a living legend. Don't be sad, be jealous, for Shane has achieved something that awfully few who take pool seriously could dream of in their wildest fantasy.
Bless his heart , Because Pool is what we Love, No dollar could buy what Shane got... Guy
