Shanelle Loraine Pool Commericial & Pic

I have been fortunate to get to know Shannelle a little bit over the last couple of years. She happens to be a very nice lady with a good sense of humor. She is probably laughing at this thread along with the rest of us.

It is true that Shanelle is not a great pool player but she is constantly improving and has consistently played better each successive time I have seen her play. She knows better than anyone that she is a long way from being a champion player, but she enjoys the challenge of learning this very difficult game and like I said, she is getting better. I would rate her as a good amateur player now. She could get in the money at the BCA National level.

If Shanelle uses Pool as her vehicle to become well known and make a good living I say more power to her. Our sport needs all the exposure it can get. In that respect Shanelle is very good for the game. I don't really care how good she plays if she can help market the game to a larger audience. Let's face it, the sport needs sponsors! What if she got Loraine to sponsor a major women's tournament? Would that be so bad?

And now the veteran steps in.

The thing is it shouldn't state she is a billiards champion. She is a spokesmodel, not a billiards champion. If she wants to call herself a pool player, great. I believe she stated she began playing in 1999 and is just now getting to amateur speed (assuming she can run more than two balls now), so it might be awhile before we see her ever go pro. Pro as in WPBA, not 'Charlie sponsors me and I play in his events so I'm a pro'.

The commercial is awesome. She is perfect for that. She's undeniably beautiful. And she looks classy so I can bet Charlie didn't pick her clothes out for her as usual. But Charlie doesn't do anything without benefitting himself - I just hope it's the standard 15% agent fee and not anything else.

Good post Jay. Shanelle brings more good than bad to pool regardless of what the purists say. I would guess that she wasn't the one that decided that she was marketable.....I would bet it was other people. If someone came to you and said you are a beautiful person and we want to market you as a beautiful person who plays pool.....would you turn it down and say "ooooh no I am not good enough to take this bundle of cash you are about to wheel out to me on a cart."

Measure all this out in pros and cons
Pros:
People are marketing her as a pool player
More pool is on television
Guys get the idea that super hot girls play pool and head out to the pool hall

Neutral/Pro:
She isn't champion caliber. I won't consider this a pro, or a con. She is a player. I would imagine that she plays a lot better than a lot of people on here and at the same time not as good as a few on here. Fact is she is improving and I have no idea how anyone can harp on that.

Cons:
The same number as the amount of dates she has gone out with me....a big fat sad zero.

No one is faulting her for marketing herself, or being in a position to market herself. Good luck to her in everything she does. If she sign more deals in the future, more power to her.

But she's not being marketed as a beautiful person who plays pool. She is being marketed as a beautiful person who DOMINATES pool, i.e., she is a CHAMPION.
Now regardless of what the dictionary heads choose as the suitable definition for the word Champion, any real pool player KNOWS what is trying to be represented, and that she isn't actually a champion, despite people saying so.

That is the extent of most of the criticism on her.

When she starts dominating the female events, THEN you might say she is a Champion, but until then, to use the word Champion to describe her is just laughable.
If they said that she was a pool enthusiast, or a pool player, or a pool representative and eliminated the "champion" title, no one would say squat.

You might have people that are bent out of shape because they themselves didn't get those same opportunities, or feel that others who actually play pool better then her should have those opportunities, but that's a whole different argument altogether.

Sorry, but you can't tell a POOLPLAYER that someone who stinks at the game, is a champion. You might be able to tell that to a bunch of fans who obviously like watching her, (like all of Asia for that matter) but that isn't going to fly for anyone who knows better.

I'd be willing to bet that if you were to do a survey of all the top tier players (and not her fans) from her target market in Asia, and ask them if she was a champion, they would be smiling and shaking their heads no.

It's that simple.

Ya mean if she got herself to sponsor a major tourney? lol

Mightcha been snagged by the words? That Loreal sounds like a combo of Shanelle Loraine?

Did you skip your Focus Factor today Jay? ;)

Make it Cream Silk as a sponsor! Not sure how I managed that one.
By the way I seriously doubt that Shanelle wrote the copy for this Ad. Someone else (an Ad writer) called her a champion. Marketing 101.
It doesn't really bother me in the least either. They can call her Ms. President as far as I'm concerned. By the way, I strongly suspect this young lady will achieve success in life far beyond the billiard arena. She's thoughtful and intelligent and is definitely goal oriented. How does Ambassador Loraine sound? Her time in the pool world may just be a stepping stone to bigger and better things. I wouldn't be surprised.

Damn Jay...just state the obvious brother...SHE IS SMOKING HOTTTT!!!

There I said it!!!! I am willing to take her on as a protege to help her billiard career boost her to higher levels.

This is what is known as a "failure in marketing". You can not call someone a champion if they haven't even won a pro event (using WPBA as my definition of pro). People will see this ad & when (maybe if) the WPBA, or any other major women's pro event, rolls into town for an event, they will attend expecting to see her. When they don't, you will hear an epic "WTF?", because if it's one thing the public will never stand for, it's being outright lied to.

I knew i shouldnt have slept throu english class all those years....the book was always so thick it made a great pillow. I suppose i learnd all the stuff in 2nd grade but hell i forgot it as soon as i was told.

i dont know, hell it doesnt really matter, i doubt americans even see the commercial on tv.

if you say someone is a Civil Rights Champion.....it doesnt mean hes a winner at civil rights.

It doesn't really bother me in the least either. They can call her Ms. President as far as I'm concerned. ...snip...

Obviously, she didn't write the copy and I doubt she had the clout to provide editorial input (short of walking off the set and being blackballed). For all we know she vocalized her concern about the use of the C word.

And same here Jay, its use doesn't bother me in the least. Not a battle in my war plan.

When I didn't know better, I always thought Shanelle is a "pro" player because I always see her on TV and in a lot of tournaments. I mean, you don't get paired against Mika or Jeanette or Yu Ram Cha if you're just a "good amateur player" If that is so, maybe I'll get TV time too :grin-square:

Obviously, something else sells in pool. How naive of me

Easy to get put into tournaments, and paired with top pros when the organization that puts on the events that you play in, is also the organization that manages you.

Talent has nothing to do with it.

Shes getting better

I played Shanelle here in Orlando in a weekly tournament a couple weeks ago and was impressed by her improvement. She broke and ran a 2 pack on me! She is defiitely getting better:)
She is one of the nicest people you will ever meet too!!!
