Sharpie on your tip sides

How do you use the Sharpie on the side of the tip?

Do you apply it before or after burnishing the tip itself?

My guess is before burnishing.

I ask because I have some tips that do not shine up much when burnished.
I was thinking about doing this but wanted to ask questions before I did it.
 
I Burnish to harden the side, then apply marker allow to dry, and burnish again. With excellent results
 
I've never heard of anyone using sharpie on the sides of their tips but I've heard of people using glue. I would think that you can just put just a drop of glue and rub it in. Don't take my word for it though. You might get some good info from the "ask a cuemaker" section.

The maker does not do anything other than darken the sides of the tip. When burnished properly it hardens the sides.
 
I've been told by builders to use super glue on the sides. Just have to be careful when doing it.
 
I"ve been doing it for years, and we always asked the customers if they wanted black out when doing tips. BTW its always the last thing you do to the tip.

The only thing I would add is DONT put it on your break cue tip....if you break and your tip is forced into the cloth on the follow through....it will leave black streaks on the cloth!!!!

One word of advice though,there ARE room owners and players that have tables in their homes that do NOT like this practice,claiming that it leaves black streaks on their cloth. I've never seen it,but it could happen. This is why I seal mine with thin CA glue afterwards :thumbup:. Tommy D.
 
I have heard it said that the ink can delaminate layerd tips...but I have black and brown tips and no delamination on either...

Sorry I should have been clearer. I did not mean to burnish after applying the sharpie, I meant that I use a piece of leather(while still on the lathe) to dry completely and absorb excess ink. This helps decrease the chance of leaving black streaks. I have never had that happen. Maybe I am lucky though.
 
I have been having it done on my Kamui tips....and never had a black streak put on a table...ever.....
Either way I gues Kamui came out with the Kamui black....which are black tips anyways...might go to those.

I only started doing this on my present tip. Sharpie after burnishing. Dunno why, psychological I am sure, but I like it a lot this way (Sniper).
 
I did it to all my snipers with good results. You'd better have a steady hand, though or you're going to mark up the ferrule a bit. I've heard of the glue thing, but I'm wondering how. I suppose that purple superglue might be good for that kind of thing.

While shaft is on the lathe put a drop or two of the thicker slower setting gel type ca glue on a rag, while the lathe is turning apply the super glu with the rag this hardens and sets up. Leaving a darker and harder tip side. but I would mask off the ferrule befor using the Sharpie or super glue. As it can be a bear to clean up once dried on all types of ferrule materials.

I don't use a sharpie on my tips but if I did I believe I would use masking tape..........I have used super glue all over the tip (water buffalo) for jump-
break cues. It makes them rock hard. If you use superglue on the wall of your tip, looks like to me it would cause more miscues........
